Abstract

Sedimentation is one of the main factors affecting the hydraulic capacity and performance of urban rivers. This study aims to analyze flow capacity and the impact of sedimentation on a river’s ability to convey flow optimally. Flow capacity analysis was conducted using the Frijlink method with a rectangular channel cross-section approach, while sediment distribution and accumulation were analyzed through hydraulic modeling using HEC-RAS software. The analysis results show that the river’s flow capacity is 3,381 m3/s. An evaluation of bed sedimentation indicates that observation point 3 has the highest sedimentation rate, with a sediment discharge of 2.85 × 10-8 m3/s/m and a sedimentation volume of 5.78 × 10-4 m3/s. The HEC-RAS modeling results show that the river’s capacity is unable to accommodate the flow rate optimally under high rainfall conditions, thus potentially causing local flooding or waterlogging.

Abstract

Abstract This community service initiative focuses on providing design assistance for appropriate sanitation infrastructure to manage domestic wastewater in Gandus Village, Palembang City. The urgency of this design stems from the area’s geographical location along a riverbank, where unmanaged domestic wastewater poses a high risk of directly polluting water bodies and damaging the river’s aquatic ecosystem. The design of this Community Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) serves as a strategic solution to minimize environmental pollution in this densely populated residential area. This system is designed to meet the sanitation needs of 67 households (HH) with an effective reactor volume capacity of 27,200 liters (27.2 m³ / WWTP) to ensure that effluent meets quality standards before discharge. The technical design employs an anaerobic biological treatment system integrating four main compartments: a sedimentation tank with an Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) in the initial stage, followed by two biofilter stages using bioball media and crushed stone media to optimize the degradation of organic pollutants. The treatment unit structure has total dimensions of 900 cm in length, 200 cm in width, and 200 cm in height. Considering operational ease and maintenance efficiency for local residents, the treated effluent is directed to be discharged directly into the local drainage system or the nearest water body. It is hoped that the implementation of this design will make a significant contribution to the preservation of the river ecosystem and the improvement of public health in the Gandus neighborhood. Keywords: community wastewater treatment plant; anaerobic system; riverbank sanitation; gandus subdistrict.

Abstract Drainage issues in urban residential areas are caused by standing water due to insufficient capacity of the drainage system to handle the volume of rainwater runoff. This condition occurs in the Bukit Sejahtera Housing Estate in RW 04, Karang Jaya, Palembang, where there is sedimentation, blockage of the drainage system due to domestic waste, and damage to the drainage system's construction. The goal of this PkM is to provide recommendations for redesigning the drainage system to improve its performance and reduce the potential for flooding. The project was carried out by five faculty members and six students from the Indo Global Mandiri University, in collaboration with the Karang Jaya District Office and the RW 04 community representatives. The implementation method of the activity includes the preparation stage, field survey, data collection, analysis of the drainage conditions using EPA SWMM, design recommendations, and socialization and delivery of the activity results. Based on the EPA SWMM simulation results, optimization was performed on four priority channels, consisting of two primary and two secondary channels. The results of the simulation after optimization show an increase in flow capacity, so the drainage network can safely handle the planned flow rate. Abstract

One of the largest cities, because it is the center of social and economic activities, is Palembang City. The area of Palembang City is around 400.61 km², consisting of 16 sub-districts and 107 villages. In this area, heavy rain has occurred which has caused flooding in this area, especially on Jalan Pipa Raja, Palembang City. One of the causes of flooding in Palembang is due to low land conditions and high tides of the Musi River. In the role of flood control, the lack of public awareness in maintaining the drainage system also worsens waterlogging. Flood control requires extensive and specific engineering knowledge. The structural method used in this study is the retention pond method. The retention pond on Jalan Pipa Jaya in Kemuning District has a capacity of around 328.8 m3/hour. Data for this study were obtained from literature studies, primary data, and secondary data. The results of the study that have been carried out indicate that in modeling using HEC-HMS, it is known that the Pipa Jaya retention pond can accommodate a peak inlet discharge of 161.3 m3/s, with a decrease to 29.7 m3/s.

Abstract

The Tampang Lake Irrigation Area, located in Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra Province, is a wetland region that is highly susceptible to flooding due to high rainfall intensity and relatively flat topography. This study aims to analyze the design flood hydrograph of the Lingkis River using the HEC-HMS hydrologic modeling software. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of rainfall analysis, Intensity–Duration–Frequency (IDF) curve analysis, the Alternating Block Method (ABM), and HEC-HMS simulation for a wetland irrigation area that has received limited attention in previous studies, particularly within the Tampang Lake Irrigation Area. The research methodology involved simulating flood hydrographs using HEC-HMS, with the simulation results serving as the basis for estimating the design flood discharge. The analysis indicates that the highest rainfall intensity occurred at a 10-minute duration with a 10-year return period, reaching 126.80 millimeters per hour. The HEC-HMS simulation produced peak flood discharges of 176.7 cubic meters per second with a runoff volume of 40.05 millimeters for the 2-year return period, 234.7 cubic meters per second with a runoff volume of 52.88 millimeters for the 5-year return period, and 274.1 cubic meters per second with a runoff volume of 61.56 millimeters for the 10-year return period. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the provision of reliable design flood discharge data to support the planning of wetland irrigation systems and flood mitigation efforts in the Tampang Lake Irrigation Area.
