Abstract

Since becoming a translator needs certain skills and qualifications, this article providesdetailed information on the process from starting and developing a career in translation.Based on accessible references and a limited interview with a professional translator, somerecommendations are in place. A perspective translator has to go through the followingprocedures; (1) acquisition and development of language competence, (2) translationcompetence development, (3) translation market, and (4) career development. Being asuccessful translator, one should have known how to start, including how to tell people theirexistence and knowing their skills and abilities in translation; how they manage their personaland financial management, how they deal with customers, and what to do if things go wrong. Abstract

Saat ini Bank Sampah di Kelurahan Klitren fokus pada kegiatan pengumpulan dan perekapan volume sampah dari warga. Sedangkan edukasi pengelolaan sampah untuk masyarakat belum optimal dilakukan. Kegiatan edukasi masih konvensional melalui pertemuan RT atau RW yang hanya dihadiri oleh kelompok usia orang tua. Sedangkan untuk anak-anak dan remaja belum ada forum yang khusus untuk mengedukasi kedua kelompok usia tersebut. Jumlah kelompok usia remaja di Kelurahan Klitren sebanyak 1632 yang berpotensi untuk membantu program kerja Bank Sampah untuk mengedukasi Masyarakat melalui konten multimedia seperti video. Agar menghasilkan konten video yang kreatif dan informatif untuk mendukung edukasi pengolahan sampah di Kelurahan Klitren diperlukan pelatihan bagi para remaja tersebut. Oleh karena itu Tim PPK ORMAWA BEM IST AKPRIND memberikan pelatihan kepada remaja di Kelurahan Klitren melalui 3 tahapan proses, yaitu: persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Tahap pelaksanaan menggunakan tiga metode, yaitu: ceramah pada sesi teori, praktek, dan evaluasi. Hasil evaluasi setelah proses pelatihan rata-rata pengetahuan dan pemahaman peserta naik 28% dibandingkan sebelum mengikuti pelatihan. Peserta yang memiliki pengetahuan tentang pengeditan video menjadi 90,2%, sedangkan peserta yang memiliki pengalaman dalam membuat konten video digital menjadi 80%. Hal ini selaras dari hasil penugasan setelah sesi praktek, seluruh kelompok berhasil membuat konten video sesuai dengan ide yang mereka rancang dengan kualitas baik. Selain itu remaja di wilayah Klitren memiliki kepedulian yang tinggi terhadap permasalahan sampah di lingkungan Kelurahan Klitren. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan hasil rekap kuesioner pada tahapan evaluasi menunjukkan peserta yang tertarik untuk mempelajari teknik pembuatan konten video untuk edukasi pengelolaan sampah sebanyak 97%.

Abstract

An English lecturer is an education professional who serves as a role model for language learners, instilling a sense of proficiency and inspiration within the students. A compelling role model is required to effectively deliver materials with public speaking skills. Therefore, a set of qualifications and expertise that inspire confidence and trust among the students is necessary for the English lecturer. Despite being aware of the essential role of public speaking in language teaching, English teachers may exhibit apathy towards its incorporation into their classroom practices. This study aims to explore the English lecturers’ experience and perception toward teaching English with public speaking skill in university level. This study’s subjects were five English lecturers from Yogyakarta and Bangka Belitung. The English lecturers were asked to state their opinion about their perception of the importance of public speaking to be employed in their teaching process, how it influenced the students’ engagement during the class, and other successful teaching factor to build the students’ interest. This study applied a qualitative descriptive approach by using semi-structured interview with the five English lecturers as an instrument to collect data. The writer analysis results indicated that the English lecturers had positive perceptions towards public speaking skill in teaching English. Meanwhile, several other essential aspects that contribute significantly to a well-rounded language education could be applied such as lecturers’ language proficiency, interpersonal skills, lesson planning and organization. Two previous studies, conducted by Afriani & Silvia (2020) and Supraptiningsih & Ahmad (2020), respectively, diverged from addressing the topic of public speaking skills in their exploration of lecturers' perceptions and professional development. Public speaking abilities were notably absent from their investigations.Main finding of this study is the English lecturers have positive perception and belief that their public speaking skills support their teaching techniques. For further studies, more elaboration of public speaking techniques would enrich the English lecturers’ knowledge in teaching with skills of effective speaking.

Abstract

Padukuhan Brajan merupakan salah satu wilayah di Kalurahan Banjararum, Kapanewon Kalibawang, Kabupaten Kulon Progo, Provinsi Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Padukuhan Brajan yang berada pada Perbukitan Menoreh termasuk wilayah sulit air, rawan kekeringan, memiliki potensi air tanah yang kecil dengan bulan kering 5-6 bulan per tahun. Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir menerima droping air karena ketersediaan air yang minim saat musim kemarau, dan belum semua warga terlayani jaringan air bersih/sehat, baik yang dilayani oleh PDAM/PAM Desa/PAMSIMAS. Air di wilayah Padukuhan Brajan juga berkapur yang apabila dikonsumsi dalam jangka panjang dapat menimbulkan gangguan kesehatan dan penyakit. Kegiatan inovatif diperlukan untuk mengatasi masalah ketersediaan air, terutama air minum bagi warga di Padukuhan Brajan. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) telah dilaksanakan untuk mengatasi masalah air minum tersebut, berupa penerapan Teknologi Tepat Guna (TTG) sistem pengolah air menjadi air siap minum. Kegiatan PkM di wilayah Padukuhan Brajan dilaksanakan sebagai bagian dari Program Kosabangsa Tahun 2023 dengan sumber pendanaan dari Direktorat Riset, Teknologi dan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (DRTPM) Kemdikbudristek. Pelaksana kegiatan adalah tim gabungan dosen dan mahasiswa dari 3 (tiga) kampus, yaitu Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani Yogyakarta (UNJAYA), Universitas AKPRIND Indonesia, dan Universitas Gadjah Mada. Kegiatan PkM berlangsung selama 3 bulan. Tahapan kegiatan yang dilaksanakan meliputi sosialisasi, pelatihan, penerapan teknologi, pendampingan, serta evaluasi dan keberlanjutan. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi, kegiatan ini mampu menjadi bagian solusi untuk masalah minimnya ketersediaan air bersih di lokasi Mitra. PkM ini juga sejalan dengan upaya peningkatan kesejahteraan sosial masyarakat, khususnya pelayanan air bersih. Dalam skala yang lebih luas dan jangka panjang, penerapan TTG Pengolah Air Siap Minum dapat mendukung upaya mengatasi masalah stunting di wilayah mitra. Dukungan para pemangku kepentingan merupakan faktor penting terhadap terlaksananya dan ketercapaian kegiatan. Pendekatan keseluruhan pelaksanaan PkM ini dapat dijadikan model untuk pengembangan wilayah serupa di wilayah dan waktu yang berbeda.

Abstract

Sekolah Sampah Bantala Abyudaya (Kolam Banyu) was established to instill awareness of environmental preservation. Therefore, Kolah Banyu, with its noble goal, needs environmental ambassadors who can speak in public to achieve this. The PPK Ormawa Team of BEM Universitas AKPRIND Indonesia tried to help overcome this problem by holding public speaking training. This training aims to improve the skills and confidence of prospective Kolah Banyu environmental ambassadors. The public speaking training targets PIK-R Mekar Asri Padukuhan Kroco, Sendangsari, Pengasih Kulon Progo, who will later act as environmental ambassadors at Kolah Banyu. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test, the average pre-test score of participants was 41.62 with a standard deviation of 6.60, while the average post-test score increased to 81.47 with a standard deviation of 6.10. The paired t-test showed a t-statistic of -28.305 and a p-value of 0.000, while the Wilcoxon test gave a statistical value of 0.0 and a p-value of around 1.16e-10. These tests indicate that the training effectively increased knowledge, confidence, and public speaking skills. In addition, no participants experienced a decrease in scores, proving that all participants experienced increased knowledge and skills with a 95% confidence level.
