Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) is a type of tourism in large groups, planned well in advance, and brought together for a particular purpose. Surakarta as one of MICE destinations in Indonesia has hosted many national and international MICE events. The tourists who do MICE activity in Surakarta are expected to become leisure tourists who will visit Surakarta city anotther time. In order to make MICE tourists become leisure tourists later on, the Convention and Exhibition building which is the place of MICE tourist activity needs to show the elements of Javanese Culture as a means to fulfil their curiosity on the city and to make them want to know more. Showing Javanese Culture can be done not only through the facade of building but also by creating Javanese atmosphere inside the the building. The method is to use questionnare to find out what Javanese objects will be displayed on the facade of building and use Peter Zumthor’s atmosphere design to bring up the cultural atmosphere in the building.

Our research aims to identify Pracimantoro’s potentials for tourism so that the result can be used for tourism planning. By compiling potentials found in each village of Pracimantoro, and putting them into categories, we conclude that there are two main potentials for tourism in kecamatan Pracimantoro: Geopark and culture.

Abstract

Plaosan Tourism Market is the only tourism market at Magetan. This market has a potential to be a tourism destination at Magetan because it is located on the tourist route that head towards the popular attractions in Magetan. However this market is not a real tourism market as it does not meet the requirements for tourist destination which include attractions and facilities. This market does not use the potential of the area provided as attractions, even though Magetan is famous for farming and home industries. The market does not have primary and ancillary facilities to fulfill the tourism aspect. Besides the lack of attractions and facilities, the architecture of the market needs something unique on its design to attract the tourists. The design method used to redesign Plaosan Tourism Market is metaphoric architecture, because it can representate and show unique image, so it can attract tourists. The main problems in planning and designing Plaosan Tourism Market with metaphoric architecture approach ie what kind of attractions are needed in Plaosan Tourism Market, how the concept of facilities that requires tourism aspect, what form it will be used as basis of analogy that represents tourist destinations in Magetan, how to transform the base concept to be a tourism market design with metaphoric architecture. The planning and designing of Plaosan Tourism Market with metaphoric architecture approach use creative thinking method which consists of synthesising, elaborating, and imagining. Based on questionnaries, preferred objects to represent Magetan are Sarangan lake, leather handicrafts, Lawu mountain, and Batik Pringsedaphur, all of which will be to the main idea for the design by turning them into metaphor in designing this tourism market.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the redesign of Jebres Market, Surakarta. The market is redesigned to meet the national standard and to fit the condition in which the nearby Solo Jebres Station Area is changed into heritage tourism area by municipal government. In this case, the market is changed into Tourism Market due to the municipal plan to turn the nearby Solo Jebres Station Area into a heritage tourism area. The plan for the redesign of Jebres Market includes addition of capacity of users, the development of supporting facilities such as parking area, an addition of public area, and also other facilities. As the Solo Jebres Station is a heritage building, the redesign of Jebres Market as the supporting facility for the Station uses contextual architectural approach as mentioned by Brent C. Brolin in Architecture in Context (1980). This is done by adjusting the architectural elements of the architecture of Solo Jebres Station building to be applied to the new Tourism Market. Following Brolin’s theory, the elements applied to the new Market are the proportion of windows, exits and entrances, driveways, building material surfaces, finishing, and textures, parks, and architectural styles in buildings.

Abstract

Low-income settlements in Semarang City have become an issue in many cities, including Semarang City. This issue is caused by settlements that are formed organically in prohibited areas. This paper aims to find the applied typology by finding specific types that persist or recur in low-income settlements in Semarang. The typology can be used to design low-income mass housing in the city. This study used a qualitative and purposive sampling methods for the selected samples. A field study was conducted in three kampongs in Semarang with varying topographical conditions, specifically in Kampong Jurnatan (0-2% land slope), Kampong Wonosari (15-40% and>40% land slope), and Kampong Patemon (2-15% land slope). The results show several main characteristics of low-income housing in Semarang, including multifunctional rooms, rooms or areas for storage in every hsouse and communal spaces, and linear circulatory spaces that are also multifunctional for socializing in the Kampong area. These findings can be implied in the design criteria for horizontal and vertical low-income settlements.
