Abstract

This study aims to determine and examine the effects of using a smartphone while learning English. Motivation, teamwork, and portability were among the effects. The researchers investigated the impact of smartphones on English language learning, a qualitative method used in this research. The study's social context comprised fourth-semester English language education students from Ftik Unisnu Jepara. Twenty students who owned smartphones were used as research subjects. The instruments of the research used Interviews and questionnaires. According to the students' perceptions, the study's findings indicated that their use of smartphones affected their motivation, mobility, and teamwork when studying English. Additionally, using a smartphone could help them learn English more effectively. The findings of this study were corroborated by Barker's idea regarding the effects of smartphone use on learning English. However, there were drawbacks to smartphone use as well. For example, students could use their devices to cheat because they were portable, had a tendency to act quickly, and eventually developed an addiction to them.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of using charades as a teaching strategy to enhance vocabulary mastery among sixth-grade students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Sadamiyyah Guyangan Bangsri Jepara. A pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach was employed, involving 22 purposively selected students. Data were collected using a vocabulary test consisting of 30 multiple-choice and 10 short-answer questions. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students' vocabulary mastery, with the mean pre-test score increasing from 64.23 to 78.23 in the post-test. A paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant difference (Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000, p < 0.05), confirming the positive impact of the charades game. The study highlights that charades promote student engagement, motivation, and peer interaction, making vocabulary learning more effective and enjoyable. Furthermore, the results suggest that charades facilitate a dynamic and stress-free learning environment, reducing student anxiety while improving retention and recall of new words. The findings of this study suggest that incorporating interactive and engaging activities like charades can enhance vocabulary acquisition in EFL classrooms. Teachers can utilize this method to foster active participation and collaboration among students, making the learning process more immersive. Additionally, charades provide an alternative to traditional rote memorization, encouraging meaningful language use and long-term retention. Educators should consider integrating game-based learning strategies to create an interactive and student-centered classroom environment that supports vocabulary development.

Abstract

Film also brings many things to learn, including politeness. This qualitative descriptive study investigates the politeness strategies employed by the underrated characters in the film Turning Red, with a particular focus on the character Jin. The objective of the research is to analyze how assertive and non-assertive politeness strategies are used by Jin and to explore their implications for English language teaching and learning. To identify which characters to analyze, the researchers conducted a document analysis of fan comments gathered from online platforms such as Moviepedia and Looper, ensuring that audience perceptions guided the selection of underrated figures. After identifying the characters, the researchers used the official movie script and examined it through Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness framework, following the steps of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing outlined by Miles et al. (2014). The findings reveal that assertive strategies, especially informative acts, were predominant in Jin’s speech, highlighting his role as a calm, supportive problem solver in the film’s family dynamics. Importantly, this study provides meaningful insights for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, showing how analyzing politeness in authentic media can enhance learners’ pragmatic competence, cultural awareness, and communication skills. By linking media analysis with language education, the study underscores the value of films like Turning Red as resources for developing both linguistic and intercultural competence among EFL learners.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of using flashcards integrated with the traditional game engklek to improve English vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at MTs Al-Falah, Tuban. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design (Nonequivalent Control Group Design) was employed. The sample included two classes: the experimental group (VII A), which received instruction using flashcards and the engklek game, and the control group (VII D), which received conventional instruction. Pretests and posttests were used as the primary instruments. The results revealed a significant improvement in the posttest scores of students in the experimental group compared to the control group. The paired samples t-test showed a significant value (p < 0.001) and a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.85). These findings indicate that a learning method combining traditional games and visual media is effective in enhancing vocabulary mastery, while also increasing student motivation and engagement. This approach is also suitable for schools with limited digital resources, particularly in rural areas.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate the impact of Pictionary activities as a pedagogical tool for vocabulary acquisition among middle school learners. The investigative approach employed a quasi-experimental framework involving fifty-eight motivated seventh-grade pupils from MTs Al-Muttaqin Rengging, who were systematically allocated into treatment and comparison cohorts. Information gathering was conducted using initial and final assessments consisting of multiple-choice vocabulary items to monitor learners' academic development precisely. The treatment cohort experienced instruction via dynamic and entertaining Pictionary activities, whereas the comparison cohort followed traditional pedagogical approaches throughout six instructional sessions. The results showed a significant difference between the groups (p = 0.000 < 0.05), with the experimental group's average score (88.50) considerably higher than that of the control group (70.73). Both groups experienced significant improvement, but the experimental group showed greater overall improvement. The conclusion of the study clearly proves that the Pictionary game is significantly more effective than conventional methods in improving students' vocabulary mastery.
