Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid, practical, and effective instrument for assessing higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in junior high school mathematics. Employing a research and development (R&D) approach, the study adapts Mardapi's (2008) development model, which includes nine stages. However, this research focuses on the first seven stages, leaving the final implementation to teachers in schools. The instrument was tested on 40 students at SMPN 2 Rajagaluh, Majalengka Regency. The validity analysis demonstrated that all V values exceeded 0.3, indicating strong content validity. Reliability testing yielded a Cronbach's Alpha score of 0.52, suggesting moderate internal consistency. The findings revealed that students' HOTS performance remains suboptimal, highlighting the need for targeted instructional strategies. Strengthening HOTS can be achieved through structured practice with complex problem-solving tasks. This study provides a robust framework for educators to assess and enhance students’ critical thinking abilities in mathematics.

Abstract

This study aims to develop mathematics teaching materials using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on statistics topics, specifically measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode). Understanding mathematical concepts is crucial, yet many students in Indonesia still face difficulties in this area. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE approach, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research instruments consist of expert validation sheets for media and materials and practicality sheets for teachers and students. Data analysis was conducted by calculating the percentages of validity and practicality based on a Likert scale. The results indicate that the developed teaching materials have a validity score of 78.2%, which is in the valid category. These teaching materials are also highly practical for teachers and students, with a practicality score of 85.55%. The success of this study is supported by the use of the PBL model, which encourages students to actively engage in the learning process actively, thus enhancing their motivation and enthusiasm for understanding mathematical concepts. Although this study did not reach the implementation stage, the development results demonstrate the potential for improving student engagement in mathematics learning. Furthermore, this study can serve as a reference for teachers in designing more interactive and contextual teaching materials, providing a strong foundation for students' understanding of mathematical concepts in the future. Therefore, developing these teaching materials can positively contribute to the mathematics learning process in the classroom.

Abstract

Background: Educational disparities in Indonesia necessitate a comprehensive evaluation of students' critical thinking skills across various geographical regions, including highlands, border areas, and lowlands, to address potential educational shortcomings.Aim: The study aims to quantitatively assess and compare the mathematical critical thinking abilities of junior high school students across different geographical settings to inform educational strategies and interventions.Method: Employing a quantitative approach with an ex post facto causal comparative research design, the study utilized cluster sampling to select a representative sample of 82 students from highland, border, and lowland schools. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including Kruskal-Wallis tests and post hoc examinations, were conducted to analyze the data.Result: Preliminary descriptive analysis indicated a general lack of critical thinking skills in mathematics among students in all areas. However, inferential statistical analysis revealed significant differences in the critical thinking abilities of students from the three geographical regions, with students in urban (lowland) areas displaying superior critical thinking rankings compared to their counterparts in border and rural (highland) areas. Conclusion: The findings underscore significant geographical disparities in mathematical critical thinking skills among Indonesian junior high school students. These disparities are likely influenced by factors such as unequal access to educational resources, teaching methodologies, student interest, and the socioeconomic and educational backgrounds of parents. Addressing these inequalities is crucial for enhancing the educational outcomes and critical thinking abilities of students across Indonesia.
