Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid, practical, and effective instrument for assessing higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in junior high school mathematics. Employing a research and development (R&D) approach, the study adapts Mardapi's (2008) development model, which includes nine stages. However, this research focuses on the first seven stages, leaving the final implementation to teachers in schools. The instrument was tested on 40 students at SMPN 2 Rajagaluh, Majalengka Regency. The validity analysis demonstrated that all V values exceeded 0.3, indicating strong content validity. Reliability testing yielded a Cronbach's Alpha score of 0.52, suggesting moderate internal consistency. The findings revealed that students' HOTS performance remains suboptimal, highlighting the need for targeted instructional strategies. Strengthening HOTS can be achieved through structured practice with complex problem-solving tasks. This study provides a robust framework for educators to assess and enhance students’ critical thinking abilities in mathematics.

Abstract

This study aims to develop mathematics teaching materials using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on statistics topics, specifically measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode). Understanding mathematical concepts is crucial, yet many students in Indonesia still face difficulties in this area. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE approach, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research instruments consist of expert validation sheets for media and materials and practicality sheets for teachers and students. Data analysis was conducted by calculating the percentages of validity and practicality based on a Likert scale. The results indicate that the developed teaching materials have a validity score of 78.2%, which is in the valid category. These teaching materials are also highly practical for teachers and students, with a practicality score of 85.55%. The success of this study is supported by the use of the PBL model, which encourages students to actively engage in the learning process actively, thus enhancing their motivation and enthusiasm for understanding mathematical concepts. Although this study did not reach the implementation stage, the development results demonstrate the potential for improving student engagement in mathematics learning. Furthermore, this study can serve as a reference for teachers in designing more interactive and contextual teaching materials, providing a strong foundation for students' understanding of mathematical concepts in the future. Therefore, developing these teaching materials can positively contribute to the mathematics learning process in the classroom.

Abstract

Background: Educational disparities in Indonesia necessitate a comprehensive evaluation of students' critical thinking skills across various geographical regions, including highlands, border areas, and lowlands, to address potential educational shortcomings.Aim: The study aims to quantitatively assess and compare the mathematical critical thinking abilities of junior high school students across different geographical settings to inform educational strategies and interventions.Method: Employing a quantitative approach with an ex post facto causal comparative research design, the study utilized cluster sampling to select a representative sample of 82 students from highland, border, and lowland schools. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including Kruskal-Wallis tests and post hoc examinations, were conducted to analyze the data.Result: Preliminary descriptive analysis indicated a general lack of critical thinking skills in mathematics among students in all areas. However, inferential statistical analysis revealed significant differences in the critical thinking abilities of students from the three geographical regions, with students in urban (lowland) areas displaying superior critical thinking rankings compared to their counterparts in border and rural (highland) areas. Conclusion: The findings underscore significant geographical disparities in mathematical critical thinking skills among Indonesian junior high school students. These disparities are likely influenced by factors such as unequal access to educational resources, teaching methodologies, student interest, and the socioeconomic and educational backgrounds of parents. Addressing these inequalities is crucial for enhancing the educational outcomes and critical thinking abilities of students across Indonesia.

Abstract

This research aims to strengthen students' mathematical problem-solving skills by creating teaching modules based on the Discovery Learning approach. Because traditional teaching approaches often fail to engage students effectively, the development of this module is essential. In our research, we use research and development (R&D) techniques with 4D models up to the Development stage, which concentrates on module design and testing. Based on the findings of the validity test, media experts got a score of 73%, while material experts got a score of 87%. The criteria used include relevance, completeness, ease of understanding, suitability for discovery learning, and problem-solving skills. Meanwhile, practicality received an average score of 93.5% from teachers and students. Therefore, modules can be considered legitimate and useful, and are expected to improve student engagement and problem-solving skills. Through this research, it is hoped to significantly advance mathematics education with the creation of more creative teaching strategies. The findings provide a foundation for future studies to refine and expand Discovery Learning-based instructional materials in mathematics education.

Abstract

This systematic literature review analyzes 27 empirical studies published between 2020 and 2024 on the use of animation in mathematics learning by applying the PRISMA protocol within a Critical Interpretive Synthesis (CIS) framework, complemented by keyword co-occurrence analysis, heatmap visualization, thematic analysis of 27 abstracts, and a relational mapping Sankey diagram. Descriptively, publication trends show a fluctuating pattern with the most significant surge occurring in 2023 (9 publications), predominantly from Indonesia (≈40%), followed by African and European countries, and by experimental (33.3%) and R&D (25.9%) designs. The most frequently investigated mathematical competency is conceptual understanding (37.0%), whereas higher-order skills such as HOTS, reasoning, and mathematical connections remain marginal. The distribution of animation platforms is dispersed, with no single dominant tool, including Powtoon, GeoGebra, and animated videos (each at 11.1%). Keyword co-occurrence analysis yields six clusters, centered on the GeoGebra–geometry cluster, with the mathematical connection node positioned the most independently, indicating weak theoretical integration in that area. The heatmap and Sankey diagram reveal unbalanced cross-dimensional relationships, highlighting that links among methodology, mathematical competencies, and platforms are more strongly shaped by institutional preferences and technological readiness than by cognitive demands. The thematic analysis identifies five major themes: (1) the effectiveness of animation in supporting conceptual representation, (2) cognitive mechanisms such as segmentation and cognitive load reduction, (3) enhancement of motivation and engagement, (4) technology integration and teacher readiness, and (5) implementation constraints, including reliance on demonstration and lack of theoretical integration. The methodological quality assessment indicates small sample sizes, short intervention durations, inconsistent instruments, and potential publication bias. Future research should integrate stronger theoretical frameworks, expand its focus on higher-order competencies, and conduct longitudinal and comparative studies across platforms to strengthen the empirical basis for the use of animation in mathematics education.    Keywords: animation, mathematics education, technology, systematic literature review.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the difference in improving students' self-efficacy between those who use the Discovery Learning teaching style and those who use traditional learning methods. The study included samples from class XI TSM 1 as the experimental group and class XI TSM 2 as the control group. The study utilized purposive sampling as the chosen strategy, which involves gathering data based on specific criteria. The experimental class is exposed to the implementation of the Discovery Learning instructional model, whereas the control class adheres to a conventional learning framework. The results of this study indicate that there is an inequality in the development of self-efficacy between the students in the experimental class and those in the control class. The experimental class saw a considerable enhancement, whereas the control class experienced a minor increase. Therefore, it can be deduced that the experimental class, which employed the Discovery Learning learning model, saw a more significant enhancement in self-efficacy in comparison to the control class that utilized the conventional learning model.
