Abstract

The two main aspects to be considered in translating source language are linguistics and non linguistic. Transitivity system and gramatical complexity belong to the aspect of linguistic and should be maintained by the translator to translate the source language accurately. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the system of transitivity and grammatical complexity variations in interlingual translation: English-Malay subtitle of Avatar, (2) to describe the factors that motivate the occurance of the variations, (3) to desscribe the effects of the occurance of the variations in aspect of accuracy and acceptability. The result of data analysis shows that the variation of transitivity system and gramatical complexity is very low. The factor motivating the occurrence of variation are intratextual context, intertextual context and situational context. The occuring variations bring negative effect on accuracy and acceptability of the translation.

Abstract

This research aimed at describing the implementation of inclusive class program at Islamic higher education in Surakarta, revealing supporting and constraining factors of program implementation, and describing the understanding, attitude, and efforts of the lecturers in inclusive class. This is descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were lecturers and students in inclusive class program. Data collection techniques are observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used the model developed by Miles and Hubermann (2014) consisting of data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion. The results of this research indicate that the implementation of the inclusive class program has not been running perfectly, proven with the finding of several fundamental constraints becoming obstacles to the implementation of the program. Furthermore, several supporting factors to the program implementation were also found which could be used as the main foundation to improve the implementation. Furthermore, the understanding, attitude, and efforts of the lecturers regarding to the implementation of the inclusive class are very positive, as proven by the awareness and understanding regarding improving services for students with special needs. Several attempts were made to carry out the program properly by planning for the physical environment, teaching procedures, and learning materials using adaptive tools. Abstract

In Indonesia, to strengthen the memorization and comprehension of holy Qur’anic verses among youth, short verses are often adapted into senandung (chanting). This phenomenon is of academic urgency to study as it involves issues of preserving the accuracy and sacredness of the transadapted verses while simultaneously lyricizing them into songs. We argue that this specific transadaptation deserves a new term as a point of departure. We called it transnuancing, a portmanteau of translation and nuancing. To support the claim, we formulated the research questions: 1) what is transnuancing? 2) what are the characteristics of transnuancing? To address the questions, we employed the theories of transadaptation by Purnomo et al. (2022), musical nuance by Roholt (2014), sonic theology by Beck (2021), Maclean, Bryant, and Bradley (1987), and paraphrasing by Gorleé (2005) with analysis techniques by Spradley (2016) in a qualitative design context. Theoretical triangulation was implemented to ensure the data’s validity. The findings indicate that to preserve the accuracy and sacredness of the transadapted verses in Javanese and Indonesian, the translators pay close attention to the nuances of the translation. We classified the nuancing into semantic, aesthetic, and contextual nuancing. Through semantic nuancing, the translation is taken from official translations of the Qur’an. Through aesthetic nuancing, background music or a genre considered solemn was selected to accompany the translation. Through contextual nuancing, the context surrounding the translation was considered. Future studies could investigate the parameterization of the nuancing to determine their numerical weights by involving audience receptions. Through this parameterization process, assessment rubrics that include nuancing as one of the elements could be designed.
