Abstract

Translating interrogative sentences is crucial to preserving the original dialogue's meaning and nuance, as well as conveying emotions such as curiosity or affirmation to the audience. This study aims to analyze the ideology, methods, and translation techniques used and the acceptability of the translated texts of interrogative sentences in Ernest et Célestine. Research on interrogative sentences is still limited, especially in animated films like Ernest et Célestine. Most of the previous studies discuss translation broadly without focusing on interrogative sentences. Using the descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzes and descriptively present the ideology, methods, and techniques used in translating interrogative sentences. In this study, the researcher will classify interrogative sentences based on Anne Dagnac's theory (2024), then analyze the translation ideology based on Venuti's theory and Newmark's translation method (1988) in Siregar (2017), and Molina and Albir's translation technique (2002) in Emzir (2015). The study identifies four translation technique combinations: single, duplet, triplet, and quartet. Among the 18 analyzed samples, domestication was the translation ideology used. The most frequently used translation methods were communicative translation (16 cases), followed by free translation (1 case) and literal translation (1 case). Eight translation techniques were identified, including reduction, common equivalence, adaptation, modulation, amplification, transposition, borrowing, and literal translation. The triplet technique was the most common, followed by quartet, duplet, and single techniques. The translation of interrogative sentences in Ernest et Célestine prioritizes domestication to improve acceptability in the local cultural context, achieved through a combination of translation methods and techniques

Abstract

This study analyzes and describes how isotopic regularity and irregularity manifest through symbols in three symbolic poems by Stéphane Mallarmé titled Brise Marine (1865), Les Soupirs (1864), and Éventail (1884). These three poems share thematic elements centered on absence, silence, and the search for spiritual meaning. Greimas’s theory of isotopy serves as the foundation for analyzing semantic consistency or the repetition of meaning within the text. This qualitative descriptive study with structural-semiotic analysis focuses on identifying isotopies—both regular and deviant—to uncover the symbolic meanings within the works. The research involves structural analysis to identify coherent isotopies, interpret symbols exhibiting irregularity to uncover deeper meanings, and track the repetition of semantic units in determining regularity and irregularity within the poems. The results indicate that 61 symbols from the three poems contain a clash between the regularity and irregularity of isotopy. The groups of isotopic regularity identified include: intellectual isotopy, social isotopy, existential isotopy, inner isotopy, isotopy of beauty and purity, seasonal isotopy, isotopy of hope, isotopy of imagination, natural isotopy, emotional isotopy, and isotopy of authority. Meanwhile, the isotopic irregularities identified include: the isotopy of the urge to escape, the isotopy of the journey, the isotopy of failure or destruction, aimless movement, the isotopy of solitude or emptiness, suffering, exhaustion, the isotopy of the boundaries between reality and imagination, the isotopy of aimless romance, feelings of being held back, and tempting desires. Keywords: isotopy; regularity; irregularity; poetry; symbolism

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of stylistics and rhetoric in the representation of social criticism in pre-1900 and post-1900 French poetry. The novelty of this research lies in its theoretical integration, which explicitly combines the concepts of stylistics, Aristotelian classical rhetoric, and Fairclough's model of Critical Discourse Analysis as the primary analytical framework to uncover issues of inequality, humanity, and social reality. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this study compares the aesthetic characteristics of both eras. Pre-1900 poetry is examined based on its emphasis on fixed forms, classical language, and tradition, whereas post-1900 poetry is analyzed through the aspects of freedom of expression, rejection of traditional conventions, subjectivity, ambiguity, and wordplay. The data sources for this research consist of ten pre-1900 poems and ten post-1900 poems. Data collection was conducted by documenting the dominant linguistic styles and their rhetorical functions in representing social criticism, with the researcher serving as the primary instrument. The results indicate that pre-1900 poetry tends to utilize symbolic and metaphorical styles with implicit rhetorical functions. Conversely, post-1900 poetry prominently features direct, repetitive, and confrontational styles. These differences demonstrate that stylistic and rhetorical tendencies in poetry reflect the aesthetic and ideological characteristics of each literary period. Theoretically, this study offers a specific contribution in the form of a new interdisciplinary approach model, proving that the integration of stylistics, classical rhetoric, and Critical Discourse Analysis is effective in distinguishing the shifting ways social criticism is represented across different periods of French literature.

Abstract

Background: Fairy tales play an important role in shaping children's character because they contain moral values that reflect stages of moral development. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the stages of moral development in children in Charles Perrault's fairy tales using Kohlberg's theory of moral development. Method: This study uses a qualitative design with a content analysis approach based on literature review. Data were sourced from two selected fairy tales in Contes de Perrault, Le Petit Chaperon Rouge and Le Petit Poucet, which feature children as the main characters. Data collection techniques were carried out through text reading and note-taking of narratives containing moral values. The data were analyzed by classifying the findings into levels and types of moral development according to Kohlberg's theory. Results and Discussion: The results show that both fairy tales contain two levels of Kohlberg's moral development with different variations. Differences in the complexity of the storyline and the maturity of the main characters influence the diversity of moral values found. This study fills a gap in research by showing that classic French fairy tales are not only narrative in nature, but also systematically represent the stages of children's moral development. Conclusions and Implications: This study concludes that Charles Perrault's fairy tales are relevant as a medium for studying children's moral development. These findings imply the use of classic fairy tales as a source of moral learning and open up opportunities for further research on other children's literature.
