Abstract

Maxims are the rules of cooperative principle which is proposed by Grice in 1975. These maxims are used in conversation in order to make communication run smoothly. However, people often do not observe the maxim to deliver meaning implicitly; it is called as flouting of maxim. Flouting of maxim does not only happen in daily conversation but also occurs in literary work such as movie entitled La La Land. Therefore, this research was focused on analyzing the flouting of maxims which was done by main characters in La La Land movie. This research aimed at revealing kinds of maxim flouted by the main characters and also identifying the implied meaning behind their utterances. This research was conducted by using content analysis qualitative method since it focused on understanding language phenomena deeply. Data were taken from movie in the form of utterances. Dealing with the purposes of the research above, it was found that main characters flouted all kinds of Gricean maxim. There were 44 data that contained flouting of maxims in the movie. In addition, it was also found the implied meaning behind main characters’ utterances depending on the context of conversation. Most of the implied meaning contained of insulting, rebuking, requesting, and praising.Maksim merupakan aturan dalam prinsip kerja sama yang diusulkan oleh Grice pada tahun 1975. Maksim digunakan dalam percakapan untuk membuat komunikasi berjalan lancar. Namun, orang sering tidak mematuhi maksim untuk menyampaikan makna secara implisit; hal ini disebut sebagai pelanggaran maksim. Pelanggaran maksim tidak hanya terjadi dalam percakapan sehari-hari tetapi juga terjadi dalam karya sastra, seperti film berjudul La La Land. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini difokuskan pada analisis pelanggaran maksim yang dilakukan oleh karakter utama dalam film La La Land. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis maksim yang dilanggar oleh para karakter utama dan juga mengidentifikasi makna tersirat di balik ucapan mereka. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif analisis isi karena berfokus pada pemahaman mengenai fenomena bahasa secara mendalam. Data pada penelitian ini diambil dari film dalam bentuk ucapan. Berkaitan dengan tujuan penelitian di atas, ditemukan bahwa para karakter utama mencemooh semua jenis maksim Gricean. Ada 44 data yang berisi pelanggaran maksim dalam film. Selain itu, ditemukan juga makna tersirat di balik ucapan karakter utama tergantung pada konteks percakapan. Sebagian besar makna tersirat mengandung ujaran yang berfungsi untuk menghina, memarahi, meminta, dan memuji.

Abstract

Hush, Hush was a young adult fantasy novel written by Becca Fitzpatrick which told the journey of Fallen Angel named Patch. There were two problems of study, they were: what forms of archetype are appeared in Patch’s personality and how is the main character  described in Hush, Hush novel. The purposes of this study were decribed the archetype forms are appeared in Patch Personality and describes the main character personality in Hush, Hush novel. Qualitative Reseach was used to interpretating all phenomena’s and issues related Patch personality. The researcher applied this research as literaty criticism since the researcher was the key intruments it self  in analysis and interpretation on literary work. Carl Jung Gustav theory about archetype was used as the main theory to describe and analyze the main character. The data of this study were collected from Hush, Hush novel by Becca Fitzpatrick. The result of this study showed six forms of archetype were appeared in main character’s personality, there were the persona, the shadow, the anima and animus, the great mother, the wise old man and the self and two characters personality of main character, such as myterious and ambitious.

Abstract

This study discussed the use of code-switching among the late adolescents in social media Facebook. The purpose of the research was to know the types of code-switching used among the late adolescents in social media Facebook by applying Poplack theory. The other purpose was to reveal the reasons for using such types of code-switching in social media Facebook by applying Hoffman theory. The descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study. The data of the research were analyzed using Miles and Huberman method. The results of the research were: (1) there were three types of code-switching used by the late adolescents in social media Facebook, (2) some reasons in using code-switching were being emphatic to others, the use of interjection to gain attention, the use of repetition for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, expressing identity group, softening the request or command, lexical needs, and using  satire. Satire was mostly found in this research.Keywords: code-switching, late adolescent, social media

Abstract

This study deals with the conversational implicatures on Indonesia Lawyers Club program on TV One. The objectives of the study are (1) to observe the types of maxim violation potentially cause conversational implicature, (2) to ascertain the maxim violation that dominantly causes conversation implicatures, (3) to give the reasons of the dominant type of violation that causes conversational that causes conversational implicatures on Indonesia Lawyers Club program by using Gricean Theory of Cooperative Principle. The study is conducted by qualitative content analysis. The findings of the study are, (1) there are four types of maxim violations as maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of manner, and maxim of relevance, (2) the dominant type of maxim violation appeared is maxim quantity and (3) the reasons of the dominant type deal with, to show up pain and core of the problem to the audience, to save one face, to defend certain group and blame the government.Keywords: conversational implicature, cooperative principle, maxim violation, Indonesia Lawyers Club

Abstract

This study investigates the interaction between local, national, and foreign languages in family language policies in Samarinda, Indonesia. The main focus is to investigate the extent to which these policies affect social cohesion and educational opportunities. The study emphasizes a notable deficiency in comprehending how multilingual policies are managed inside households in multicultural environments. This research utilized a qualitative case study to investigate language practices and attitudes in 10 multilingual families in Samarinda. The data collection process involved in-depth interviews and participant observation. The data found were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results demonstrate that these families effectively handle language usage, balance to preserve their culture, and meet the linguistic requirements of a globalized world. This, in turn, promotes social integration and improves economic prospects. The careful management of languages within family settings indicates that comprehensive and adaptable language policies are essential for promoting social unity and expanding opportunities for education and economic participation. It provides both theoretical and practical contributions to the discussion on family language policies, delivering notable contributions that may be used to improve policy-making in similar multicultural settings. This research not only expands scholarly comprehension of linguistic dynamics in multicultural environments but also offers practical suggestions for policymakers to promote linguistic diversity and enhance the availability of language resources.

Abstract

This research discusses about the portrayal of liberal feminism experienced by the main character in the Jane Eyre novel. In conducting this research, the researcher used the theory of liberal feminism and the theory of characterization by Reaske. The researcher used qualitative research as the method and mimetic as the approach of this research. The findings of this research showed that there are two aspects of liberal feminism that are portrayed in the novel; namely equal education and equal liberty. Those aspects are portrayed through Jane Eyre’s character when she struggled to get her freedom by being intelligent and progressive to get well education, and being independent and courageous to get her freedom.

Abstract

Language serves as the communication tool whether it is verbal and non-verbal ways.  To understand the language intention, we have to know the function, then it is called as the language function. In this study, the language functions were conducted in Public Service Advertisements which entitled Gerakan Literasi Nasional (GLN). The objectives of the study were to find out the language functions presented in the advertisements of Gerakan Literasi Nasional and to describe the purposes of those advertisements in it. The theory proposed was Jakobson`s language function and the research design applied was Qualitative Content Approach (QCA). The data were obtained from two sorts of advertisement which had the same theme in spite of different sources. One was from SMK Budi Warman 1 Jakarta Timur and another one was from public government by Kemendikbud. The data were analyzed by Miles and Huberman`s concept within the procedure of discourse analysis. The findings of the study were 1) there were four types of language functions as referential, emotive, conative and poetic functions, and 2) the purposes of the advertisements in GLN were mainly to persuade and inform the viewers about the importance of literacy to improve their knowledge.

Abstract

Self-actualization is the highest level of psychological development that motives all human behaviors towards the full realization of a person’s higher potential life. This study aims at revealing Noah Calhoun as the main character of his self-actualization in The Notebook novel. The idea of self-actualization itself will be elaborated by using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Moreover, this study is conducted by using qualitative method. The researcher generated the data from every chapter of the book, including dialogue, words, phrases, sentences which deal with self-actualization’s character. In dealing with the researcher’s purpose, it was found that Noah Calhoun has attained his physiological needs, safety and security needs, love and belonging needs, and esteem needs sufficiently and also the characteristics of self-actualized person. It can be seen in what Noah Calhoun did on the situation described in the novel.

Abstract

This research analyzes prejudice in The Hundred Foot Journey Novel. The novel explains about prejudice which is done by French towards Indian. This research aims to reveal rejections generated from prejudice that happened to Indian and to describe the behaviors of Indian when they experienced prejudice. This research uses Gordon Allport’s prejudice theory and then the prejudice generated several rejections: antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, physical attack and extermination. Prejudice also generated behaviors from the victim of it, in this case behaviors became the response. The theory of behavior is also based on Gordon Allport which divided into extropunitive and intropunitive behavior. The method of this research is qualitative research with mimetic approach. The data are narrations and dialogues that related to prejudice and also rejections from prejudice. The data are analyzed by using Allport’s theory and then the process of data analysis is using Miles and Huberman’s theory. The result of this research is four out of five rejections from prejudice are found in this research. There were antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, and physical attack. Meanwhile in this research, extropunitive was the most dominant behavior as the response from the Indian.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe the categories of defense mechanism used by Tyrion Lannister. Sigmund Freud’s theory of defense mechanism and personality theory is used by the researcher to answer the research question. This research uses qualitative descriptive method. The data of this research are scenes and dialogues of Tyron Banister including dialogues and scenes from other characters that contain the defense mechanism used by Tyron. The data analysis was conducted through observation, collecting, identifying, and classifying data to find the necessary data for the research. The findings of the research are as follows: in the Third and Fourth season of Game of Thrones film series created by David Benioff and D.B Weiss, all twelve defense mechanisms are found. Those are; Ten data of denial, thirty data of rationalization, two data of projection, four data of sublimation, eight data of reaction formation, two data of displacement, three data of regression, three data of undoing, six data of identification, five data of compensation, eighteen data of humor, and three data of repression. The cases of defense mechanisms used by Tyron gained through character and characterization. Character and characterization are necessary to understand certain situations in the story, it helps the researcher to determine the cause of the events and how the character reacts to it via indirect characterization or actions. Furthermore, character and characterization define what kind of defense mechanisms that are used by the character to work through his problems such as being despised, mocked, and humiliated.
