Abstract

Loading companies have a high accident risk because the services that they provide involve a lot cargo moving in out of cargo ships. Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOPs) are common risk management procedures that a company should follow to ensure the safety of the workers by measuring the risks and preparing strategies to control the hazards. This research aims to identify, assess and manage the occupational health and safety of the workers during loading processes in the container terminal of PT Pelindo IV (persero) in Makassar in 2019. It investigates the issue by employing descriptive quantitative method and observational approach. Observational approach allows this research to describe the stages of loading process through observations that utilize work sheet Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOPs) and AS/NZS 4360:2004. The research samples consist of 157 respondents who are selected using proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The research findings identify some hazards of loading process including physical, mechanical and ergonomic hazards with mechanical hazard having the highest level of hazard by 74.5% particularly in Haulage/Trucking area. The risk assessment indicates that undesirablerisks on the first, third, fourth and fifth work stages are categorized into acceptable with control on the second work stage.

Abstract

Traditional fishermen are exposed to various occupational hazards due to the nature of their work, often lacking adequate safety practices and health knowledge. This community service initiative aimed to improve occupational safety and health (OSH) behaviors among traditional fishermen on Kambuno Island, Pulau Sembilan District, Indonesia. Using a one-group pre- and post-test design, the intervention targeted a sample of 60 out of 862 local fishermen. The program involved counseling sessions and the distribution of OSH guidelines specifically tailored for fishing activities, delivered over a two-month period. The intervention assessed various components related to OSH, including the use and completeness of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), knowledge and practice levels, personal health habits, treatment-seeking behavior, and environmental health awareness. Results showed significant improvements in PPE usage, knowledge levels, and OSH practices. For instance, post-intervention data indicated a substantial increase in the use of head, hand, and foot protection, as well as life vests. Furthermore, positive behavioral changes were observed in boat cleaning, self-care, and formal healthcare-seeking behaviors, as fishermen increasingly opted for health centers over traditional treatments. The findings suggest that focused OSH interventions can effectively enhance safety and health behaviors in high-risk fishing communities. This program underscores the importance of continued education and monitoring to sustain these improvements and reduce occupational risks in traditional fishing communities.

Abstract

Work in the agricultural sector heavily depends on nature and the physical environment. The risk of accidents increases due to fatigue, inadequate equipment, difficult terrain, exposure to extreme weather, and poor health, which are also associated with working and living in remote areas. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing injuries and health complaints among farmers in Bontomanai Village. This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design conducted from July to October 2024 in Bontomanai Village, Gowa Regency. The respondents of this study were 315 farmers selected through purposive sampling. The independent variables were age, education level, gender, work experience, working hours, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and working posture. A total of 16.5% of respondents experienced injuries, while 55.6% reported health complaints. There was a significant relationship between gender and injuries, as well as between working hours and health complaints. Limiting working hours and empowering the community by forming "Agricultural OHS Cadres" is suggested to provide continuous knowledge about Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in the agricultural sector. Keywords: injury; farmer; health; safety
