Abstract

This study investigates the role of personification in Justin Bieber’s 2015 album Purpose, with a particular focus on how this figurative device enhances the album’s thematic and emotional dimensions. While previous studies on song lyrics have predominantly examined general themes or metaphorical expressions, limited scholarly attention has been given to the systematic use of personification in contemporary pop music. Employing a qualitative content analysis, this research examines all selected lyrics from the Purpose album, identifying and categorizing instances of personification and analyzing their functions in shaping meaning and listener engagement. The analysis reveals that Bieber frequently personifies abstract concepts such as time, love, memory, and freedom, as well as natural elements like wind and night, transforming them into active agents within the lyrical narrative. These personifications serve multiple functions, including emotional engagement, conceptual clarification, narrative enhancement, and thematic development. The findings suggest that personification is not merely a stylistic embellishment, but rather a fundamental narrative strategy that enriches the listener’s interpretive experience and deepens the affective resonance of the album. By demonstrating how figurative language elevates lyrical expression beyond entertainment, this study contributes to a broader understanding of the significance of personification in popular music and its role in mediating self-reflection, relational complexity, and existential themes.

Abstract

Reading comprehension remains one of the most essential yet challenging skills for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Traditional reading instruction often emphasizes teacher-centered approaches that limit students’ active involvement in meaning-making. This study investigates the impact of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on enhancing EFL students’ reading comprehension skills, engagement, and strategy use. A quasi-experimental design was employed with two groups of undergraduate EFL learners: an experimental group (n = 35) receiving PBL-based reading instruction and a control group (n = 35) taught through traditional teacher-led methods. Data were collected using a reading comprehension test, an engagement questionnaire, and a reading strategies inventory. Results revealed that the PBL group achieved significantly higher post-test scores than the control group, indicating improved reading comprehension performance. Moreover, PBL fostered greater behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement, alongside the increased use of higher-order reading strategies such as inferencing, summarizing, and critical questioning. These findings suggest that PBL provides a more interactive and meaningful framework for teaching reading, enabling learners to become active participants in constructing textual meaning. The study highlights pedagogical implications for EFL educators, recommending the integration of real-world problems into reading instruction to enhance comprehension outcomes.

Abstract

In everyday communication, speakers often rely on indirect expressions whose meanings must be inferred from context, making conversational implicatures a key element in understanding how language functions beyond its literal form. This study investigates how conversational implicatures function as tools for negotiating power and identity in cross-cultural communication, as portrayed by the main characters in Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum’s Purple Hearts (2022). Guided by a sociopragmatics perspective, the research examines how implicit meanings in dialogue both reflect and shape interpersonal dynamics between Cassandra Salazar, a liberal musician, and Luke Morrow, a conservative U.S. Marine. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, analyzing 56 utterances drawn from the film’s subtitles. Findings reveal that particularized conversational implicatures (PCI) are the most dominant type, followed by generalized conversational implicatures (GCI) and scalar implicatures (SI). These implicatures serve not only to convey hidden meanings but also to express sarcasm, resistance, politeness, vulnerability, and emotional tension. The results demonstrate that implicatures are central to power relations, with Luke often using them to subtly assert institutional authority, while Cassandra employs them as acts of resistance and identity assertion. Over time, their communication shifts from conflict to adaptation, showing how cultural differences—liberal versus conservative worldviews, expressive versus restrained styles—both complicate and enrich cross-cultural interactions. This study contributes to sociopragmatics research by highlighting how cinematic discourse embodies ideological conflicts and identity negotiation, and how conversational implicatures facilitate cultural convergence in cross-cultural relationships.

Abstract

Conversational implicature was proposed by Grice (1989) into four maxims. Those are: 1) quantity maxim, 2) quality maxim, 3) relation maxim, and 4) manner maxim. It is affects in the communication in society. It is also occurred in the communicative impairment. One of the phenomena is on the schizophrenia which affect on the deficit pragmatic and the ability to comprehend the implied meaning. The data of this research is from the representative utterances from John Nash which deals with something the speaker believes. The reason in specify the data is due to the limitation of this research in order to get more details about the pattern of the implicature in the believe of schizophrenic character. The data is classified into the classification by Searle and Vanderveken which is concentrated in the representative speech act before analysing it in implicature. The theory by Grice about the four maxims is used in this research to know about the conversational implicature by the main character who is diagnosed with schizophrenia. The results shows that most dominant flouting maxim is on the relation maxim. 13 chosen data which deals with the floating maxim shows the result as follows: 3 data in quantity maxim; 1 datum in quality maxim; 6 data in relation maxim; and 3 data in manner maxim. In flouted quantity maxim utterances do not deliver well in the conversation due to schizophrenia. It deals with the ability from speaker to have in line in the topic. The flouting maxim in quantity maxim and manner maxim has the same percentage. From flouting quantity maxim, Nash does over utterance in delivering the message so that the hearers do not understand what Nash mean. The flouted manner maxim indicates the inability of the speaker in delivering in a good manner and has a sufficient meaning in the utterance. While the fluted quality maxim does not affect to the conversation.
