Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia has a rich and diverse culinary heritage, but Indonesia's culinary presence globally is still limited and often less prominent than the cuisines of other countries that are promoted more systematically. This gap highlights the need to explore how gastronomy can be strategically leveraged for nation branding, diplomatic relations, and tourism promotion. This research aims to analyze Indonesia’s gastrodiplomacy as a strategic instrument for tourism promotion through a lived experience approach. This research employs a qualitative phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with Indonesian diaspora actors, including chefs and restaurant owners across Asia Pacific, the United States, and Western Europe. Thematic analysis was used to interpret lived experiences and identify key patterns in tourism promotion. The findings reveal that gastrodiplomacy promotes tourism through five key mechanisms: entry point awareness, cultural communication, sensory and emotional engagement, destination image formation, and visit intention. Diaspora actors play a central role as informal tourism ambassadors. Indonesian gastrodiplomacy operates as an experiential and relational process embedded in everyday practices. It significantly contributes to nation branding, diplomatic relation, and tourism promotion, although its effectiveness is constrained by limited policy integration. This research is limited to qualitative analysis and diaspora perspectives, which may not fully represent broader tourism stakeholders. Contributions: This study introduces the concept of lived gastrodiplomacy and contributes to tourism and public diplomacy literature by emphasizing experiential and bottom-up approaches to tourism promotion.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effects of tourism experience and tourist attractions on revisit intention through tourist satisfaction at Barahima Beach and Umera Beach, Central Halmahera Regency. This study employed a quantitative approach using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, documentation, and literature reviews. The research sample consisted of 147 tourists who had visited Barahima Beach and/or Umera Beach within the previous five years, selected using purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted using SmartPLS 4.1.0.8 through measurement model evaluation, structural model assessment, and bootstrapping procedures to test seven research hypotheses. The results showed that tourism experience had a positive and significant effect on tourist satisfaction, while tourist attractions also had a positive and significant effect on tourist satisfaction. Tourism experience had a positive and significant effect on revisit intention, whereas tourist attractions did not have a significant direct effect on revisit intention. Tourist satisfaction had a positive and significant effect on revisit intention. Furthermore, tourist satisfaction did not significantly mediate the relationship between tourism experience and revisit intention but significantly mediated the relationship between tourist attractions and revisit intention. The findings imply that destination managers need to preserve natural attractions while improving the quality of tourism experiences, basic facilities, accessibility, information services, and local community involvement.

Abstract

Background: Digital transformation has become essential for travel agencies as consumers increasingly use digital platforms for searching information, making reservations, and accessing travel services. However, many Indonesian travel agencies still operate with conventional business models, creating challenges in achieving digital competitiveness. Objective: This study aims to examine the role of digital transformation in improving the competitiveness of travel agencies (Biro Perjalanan Wisata [BPW]) in Jakarta by analyzing the contribution of digital leadership, human resource development, and technology infrastructure. Methods: This quantitative study employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) involving 250 directors and managers of travel agencies across five administrative areas of Jakarta. The model analyzed the relationships among Digital Leadership, Human Resource Development, Technology Infrastructure, Organizational Performance, and Digital Competitiveness. Results: The model explained 74.2% of digital competitiveness variance. Digital Leadership had the strongest effect on organizational performance (β = 0.356), followed by Technology Infrastructure (β = 0.325) and Human Resource Development (β = 0.294). For digital competitiveness, Technology Infrastructure showed the highest direct effect (β = 0.267), followed by Digital Leadership (β = 0.253) and Human Resource Development (β = 0.196). Organizational Performance significantly affected digital competitiveness (β = 0.428). Conclusion: This study develops a digital transformation model based on Dynamic Capabilities Theory. The findings highlight that Digital Leadership is a critical driver of digital competitiveness in developing-country contexts, emphasizing the importance of leadership, human resources, and infrastructure integration.

Abstract

The Umrah travel business has become a lucrative venture due to the high number of Umrah pilgrims wishing to travel to the holy land. The method used is qualitative. Data was collected through interviews, documentation, and source tracing. Tracing of articles and related literature was also carried out to enrich the context and supporting theories relevant to the research objectives. The data obtained from interviews and documentation were then processed using NVivo 12 software, which facilitates the process of qualitative data analysis through coding and categorization of findings. The research found that the trust of prospective Umrah pilgrims in Indonesia is influenced by the agent's legality (official PPIU from the Ministry of Religion), recommendations from relatives, social media reviews, package prices, and service quality. The majority of pilgrims prioritize officially licensed and trusted agents, understand legal protection, and value positive experiences shared by close people with satisfactory service. Prospective pilgrims also remain wary of offers that are too cheap and expect cost and service transparency. By combining these aspects, travel agents can build solid trust and enhance their positive reputation

Abstract

The Ketek boat, a traditional motorized wooden vessel operating along the Musi River, represents an essential cultural identity of Palembang’s riverside communities and has significant potential as a river-based tourism attraction. As tourist increasingly seek authentic and culturally immersive experiences, river tourism has emerged as a strategic development trend in Southeast Asia, with previous studies emphasizing the importance of integrated management, safety, comfort, and environmental sustainability in optimizing river-based attraction. However, existing research indicates that the tourism potential of Ketek boats has not been maximized due to limited facilities, the absence of standardized service procedures, and weak destination governance. This study aims to analyze the tourism potential of Ketek boats in Palembang using the 4A framework-Attractions, Accessibility, Amenities, and Ancillary Services. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, involving primary data collection through observations and interviews, complemented by secondary data from relevant literature. The result reveal that attractions constitute the strongest component, highlighted by river cruising experiences, iconic Musi River landscapes, and diverse cultural routes. Accessibility is relatively adequate due to strategically located piers and multimodal transport connections, although constrained by limited tourist piers and multimodal transport connections, although constrained by limited tourist information and non-standardized infrastructure. Amenities remain insufficient, particularly regarding safety equipment, comfort, and service quality. Ancillary services demonstrate a need for stronger governance, formal regulations, and collaboration among stakeholders. Overall, the study concludes that Ketek boats possess substantial potential as a flagship river tourism product in Palembang however, improvements in service standardization, facility enhancement, and integrated destination management are crucial to strengthen competitiveness and ensure sustainable tourism development.
