Abstract

The presence of AI has been integrated into many aspects of life, including education and even architecture. AI has offered revolutionary alternatives for analyzing, optimizing, and visualizing an architectural design that can enrich learning experiences for students in architecture studios. Nevertheless, there is still a little research done regarding the potential and threat that AI could conceive, especially in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to explore the use of AI in architectural education through different stages of the design process. A literature review regarding the use of AI is done to determine the variety of AI used in architecture. A questionnaire is then distributed to lecturers and students that have already used digital architecture. This research could illustrate the role that AI plays in an architectural design studio.

Abstract

Surabaya as a metropolitan city, in this era is facing high business activities, economy, education, entertainment and residential needs. The presence of high rise supported by construction technology such as materials or structures, is a solution and opportunity for architecture to answer problems in urban areas by creating buildings that are comfortable and safe for residents and the environment. Starting with the establishment of Wisma BII in 1992 as the first high rise milestone, Surabaya continues to experience rapid development in high rise development. In this research there are 83 high rise buildings in Surabaya that will be analyzed by comparing the main parameters such as function, form, and material. It was found that most of the high rises developed into a mixed use with a setback form and the main structural material is concrete. The analysis was conducted using data from journals and the Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) and produced relevant findings. This research is expected to be useful for architects and urban developers in supporting sustainable development in Surabaya.

Abstract

Architectonic regionalism is an approach that seeks to incorporate regional identity into contemporary architecture. This study focuses on the application of architectonic regionalism in Osing architecture, a traditional architecture style found in the Banyuwangi region of East Java, Indonesia. Using a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach, the study analyzes three case studies of modern buildings - Hotel Sahid Osing, Blimbingsari Airport, and Polytechnic Banyuwangi Hall - that showcase reinterpretation, modification, and innovation of local architectural elements. The study finds that the architectonic regionalism approach in Osing architecture prioritizes the use of traditional materials such as wood from local mangrove forests, and construction techniques that are adapted from local practices. The topography of the site is also considered in the design process, with the buildings being responsive to the natural landscape. Moreover, local cultural values and symbolism are incorporated into the architecture, reflecting the unique identity of the Osing community. The findings of this research highlight the importance of preserving and promoting regional architectural traditions in the context of modern architecture. The reinterpretation, modification, and innovation of local architectural elements in contemporary buildings can contribute to the sustainability and cultural preservation of the region. Furthermore, the architectonic regionalism approach in Osing architecture serves as a case study for understanding how regional identity can be manifested in modern architectural design, and its implications for sustainable development and cultural heritage preservation.

Abstract

The ‘Gedung Singa’ in Surabaya is one of the first buildings in Indonesia, designed by renowned Dutch Architect, Hendrik Petrus Berlage in 1901. Despite having historical significance equal to that of the surrounding historical building, Gedung Singa appears to be vacant and ill-maintained. In recent years, the Surabaya City Government has already made efforts to revive Surabaya's old city area. Aligning with this attempt, this research aims to model the Gedung Singa via digital architecture software and do simulation to picture the daylight potential use of the building. This research found that the Gedung Singa is well adapted to the tropical climate, which results in reducing the amount of direct natural light penetrating the indoor area of the building, which further, will also reduce the heat load. Then, a more intensive simulation was carried out to optimize the existing bounced natural light to spread the illumination more evenly throughout the indoor areas of the building.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country consisting of various tribes and cultures, one of which is the Osing Tribe in Banyuwangi, located at the eastern tip of Java Island, near Bali Island. The culture of the Osing tribe is manifested in the traditional Osing house architecture, especially in Kemiren Village, which is built from a combination of Osing's unique technology and art. From its position, the Banyuwangi area is located at the boundary of tectonic plates, which results in the potential for natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis. This research aims to study the structural design of the traditional Osing tribe house in responding to these disasters threat. The identification of the structural elements is then analyzed to determine how the building will transmit the axial and lateral load, as well as withstand disasters. The result is that the Osing tribe house has applied the local wisdom, manifested in the house’s tectonic design. The details of the building could respond and distribute the loads caused by disaster. Responding to the load from the volcanic ash, the Osing house’s roof needs reinforcement to sustain its rigidity.

Abstract

Simpul penting seperti Museum R.A.

Abstract

Karet street corridor is one of the historical street corridors in Surabaya that picture the blend character of Colonial and Chinese architecture. These unique characteristics started to decrease and even vanish in some buildings in the street, through the development of Surabaya. This research aims to map the existing condition of the facade and outlining possible conservation strategies by using field observation with qualitative analysis. All the sixty two buildings alongside the street corridor will be grouped into four condition levels: excellent, good, fair, and poor that were based on integrity of the facade, the suitability of materials, and the quality of surface finishes. The result showed that in areas with low activity, the damage is more commonly found than one in busy commercial zones. It also revealed that a combination of deterioration pattern and user behaviour affect the conservation strategies that could be applied in these buildings. This study recommends a zoning-based conservation in response to the deterioration of the facade, including full restoration, maintenance for good and fair condition, and preventive action for well preserved buildings. Overall, this research recommends preservation alternatives to maintain the authenticity and cultural significance of Karet street for years to come.
