Abstract

Syntactical agreement is a pivotal grammatical relation that ensures coherence between elements in a clause, particularly in terms of number, gender, and person. Failing to master it results in grammatical errors that undermine communication. Focusing on the Inthiq! 2-Speak English! film by Gontor TV, the research aims to identify the types of agreement employed by the characters and their appropriateness across different agreement structures. Employing a qualitative content analysis design, data were collected from the film’s transcription and analyzed using established grammatical frameworks and relevant previous studies. The findings reveal two major agreement types: subject-verb agreement (55 occurrences) and pronoun-antecedent agreement (10 occurrences). Through a systematic analysis of these patterns, the researcher examines how accurately and consistently agreement forms are used in authentic dialogue and interprets how these naturally occurring examples can be transformed into pedagogical materials. The study highlights its relevance to EFL instruction by demonstrating that authentic media, particularly locally produced films, can serve as effective resources for teaching grammatical agreement, enhancing learners’ syntactic awareness, and illustrating real-life language use. The findings suggest that agreement patterns are predominantly simple and consistent, reflecting simplified spoken input rather than full natural complexity. Overall, the results provide both linguistic insights and practical implications for integrating audio-visual materials into EFL teaching.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are Islamic educational institutions characterized by the central role of the kyai (Islamic scholar) and the mosque as the spiritual and educational center. Established upon a well-structured system and value framework, these institutions strive to cultivate the character of the nation and its people, particularly exemplified by Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. The term pesantren carries diverse meanings, both individually and collectively, among Muslim communities. It is closely associated with teachers (guru ngaji) and students (santri) who engage in the study of the Qur'an, classical Islamic texts, social and natural sciences, as well as various forms of learning beyond the classroom. Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor has developed a distinctive concept and implementation in nurturing and shaping its community, encompassing not only students but also teachers and educational staff. This educational legacy has enabled Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor to preserve its educational system for nearly a century. The findings are expected to broaden perspectives on the common stereotypes surrounding the tirakat tradition of guru ngaji in Islamic boarding schools, particularly at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. The results of this study provide a descriptive and analytical account of the metaphysical spirit underlying the tirakat of guru ngaji at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. This spirit is manifested not only in religious practices but also in the teaching of science, the development of mental resilience and character, the cultivation of collective consciousness, and the formation of dedicated and resilient Muslim educators. This study is expected to broaden public understanding of Islamic boarding schools, demonstrating that they are not merely religious educational institutions but also centers for nurturing individuals of noble character who contribute significantly to society, the nation, and the state.

Abstract

This study examines the morphophonological behavior of the English derivational suffixes -ize and -ify, focusing on their influence on primary stress placement in derived verbs. Using a descriptive corpus-based approach, the study analyzes English words ending in -ize and -ify retrieved from Sketch Engine, with phonetic transcription and stress placement verified through Oxford dictionary entries. The data were classified based on suffix type, base form, derived form, and the phonetic transcription of both the base and suffixed forms. The findings show that -ize is largely stress-neutral, as most derived verbs preserve the stress pattern of their base forms. By contrast, -ify tends to be more stress-sensitive, frequently leading to stress reassignment toward the antepenultimate syllable. Although the two suffixes differ in their degree of stress sensitivity, both display a strong tendency toward antepenultimate stress in derived verbs. The study also identifies several irregular patterns, indicating that stress placement in English derivation is shaped not only by suffixation but also by lexical, prosodic, and historical factors. These findings underline the close interaction between morphology and phonology in English word formation and offer useful implications for pronunciation instruction and morphological awareness in English Language Teaching.
