Abstract

Conversation comes as two ways communication used in daily activities. The large numbers of conversations lead some researchers to analyze it. Conversation has been the primary interest to language researchers since natural, unplanned, everyday conversation is the most commonly occurring and universal language genre (Riggenbach, 1999). Conversation is a speech activity in which all members of a community routinely participate. Among other approaches to discourse analysis used in teaching speaking, conversation analysis (CA) is one of the convenient practical devices in teaching oral English in the classroom. This paper aims to explore the theoretical basis for conversational analysis and examine the techniques applying a discourse approach to teaching speaking in the classroom.

Abstract

There are more languages than the number of countries all over the world. This causes the existence of multilingualism in which a group of society can speak more than one language. Somehow, in the middle of the speech,  a speaker unintentionally and intentionally changes their language to the other language to highlight the speech or to make it easier to understand. Hence this paper reviews research findings on one of the key issues to which language contact in an educational setting has given rise, namely, the rationale for codeswitching practices in language acquisition. This is a library research presented in descriptive qualitative data. The data are taken from related literatures and observations. In particular, it reports on why bilingual teachers and students sometimes resort to codeswitching, and whether classroom codeswitching is an impediment or a resource to learning.

This research utilized a quasi-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design. The participants involved 14 who were regarded in English language teaching.  They were tested by pre-and post-treatment listening for academic purposes. The data were analyzed by paired sample t-test. The results showed a significant inequality between the mean score of the pre-test and post-test. The mean score of the post-test of learners was improved than theirs in the pre-test. Thus, the female learners in this research achieved well in promoting teaching listening for academic purposes after being treated using a bottom-up strategy.

Abstract

The use of podcasts as language teaching and learning has obtained more attention today. Podcasts have been used mostly to improve students' listening skill that is proven by numerous studies to determine how podcasts might assist students in improving their listening skills. Whereas, podcasting promotes activities for the students to practice their whole English skills. This is a literature research that provides a review of podcasting to assist EFL learners in mastering English. As many as 20 articles were used as the data sources in arranging this article. The researchers searched the articles using the keywords ‘podcast’ and ‘podcasting’. The difference between this article among previous studies is the focus on the use of podcasting for EFL learnings. The previous studies mostly discussed podcasts and podcasting for improving listening ability. The review found that podcasting is an interesting medium to be used in English learning. However, several challenges arise such as lack of technological competence, lack of vocabulary and grammar, unstable internet connection, and limited facilities. Consequently, it is advised that when using podcasts, teachers give their students appropriate direction on how to maximize their potential.

Within a conversation, people tend to use different word choices to convey the same meaning since they consider to whom they talk. Here, pragmatics role takes place. Pragmatic study focuses on how language turns to account in social communications. Moreover, this concerns to the interrelation between the speaker and the listener. This research aims to analyse the importance of using pragmatics in social interaction and how it affects the social relation between the interpreter and the interpreted. This was a case study that performed qualitative research. The subjects were chosen considering the age-gap of both speakers and their social relationship that affects the existence of pragmatic competence. The researcher took the primary data from a conversation in social context by participating in observation and note-taking/recording technique, then the conversation was being transcribed. Meanwhile, several related literatures were used as the secondary data to maintain the reliability of the data. The data then were presented descriptively to analyse the result. It was found that pragmatics took a significance part in maintaining the social relationship for both interlocutors. The interlocutors used different level of language according to the level of language politeness. The goal of communication was not only to deliver the message among interlocutors but also to maintain a close social relationship. Furthermore, age and social status were some aspects that cannot be neglected in social norms thus the role of pragmatics was also enormously needed to perform politeness in language..

Abstract

Enhancing speaking skills is essential, especially for EFL learners who find it challenging to perform English well since it is not their native language. In this case, a debate is promoting a new perspective among the EFL learners that this technique gives them opportunities to have discussions; they can use the language freely; without any forces and strict rules that make them be motivated to speak actively. The instructors can employ this technique to accommodate students with differing learning styles. Debating as a teaching technique brings many advantages to EFL learners, including promoting higher order thinking skill, mastering the course topics, increasing the speed of learning, enhancing social skills, promoting evaluation power, promoting mental health, and leading to creative learning. However, this technique carries its own opponents, is limited, and is challenging to apply. Therefore, this paper aims to introduce debate as an instructional technique, review earlier studies on it, compare it with other similar procedures, and discuss its limitations and challenges as well as its benefits, especially to EFL learners.

Abstract

The spread of COVID-19 pandemic impacted to many factors, one of them is the education sector. For about 2 years, teaching and learning in all levels was done using an online system. As a result, school parties implemented new rules to support the education system during a pandemic. After Covid-19 is over, it appears that in the digital age, online learning has merged with other teaching and learning activities.  This study sought to identify and characterize the difficulties teachers had when delivering online instruction and the methods they used to overcome those difficulties. For collecting the data, the researcher applied questionnaires and interviews as the research instruments. Then, the questionnaire's findings showed that teachers experienced difficulties in teaching online, including the use of technology, facilities, students’ motivation, and others.
