Abstract

The notion of multiculturalism is conceived as an idea to acknowledge and accommodate diversity and differences in beliefs, practices, traditions, languages, or lifestyles. However, the understanding of the notion of multiculturalism is limited to the recognition of cultural diversity possessed by certain individuals or groups. During the intercultural interactions in urban society that occur dynamically, hybridity has become an important capital for being to live side by side and have the ability to be renewed. This hybridity phenomenon has been recorded through photographs of traditional and cultural activities of the Chinese ethnic group at the Tri Dharma Temples in Bali. The practice of Chinese ethnic traditions and culture in Bali is an effort by the Chinese-Balinese ethnic group to preserve their ancestral heritage by adopting Balinese cultural elements. As a work of art that embodies narrative function, photographs of traditional and cultural activities of the Chinese ethnic group at the Tri Dharma Temples in Bali conveyed stories and connected several events within the framework of the concept of multiculturalism. This qualitative descriptive research aimed to document the traditional and cultural activities of the Chinese ethnic group at the Tri Dharma temples in Bali using a combination of photo-ethnography and narrative research designs. The narrative of photographs within this study provided a visual that described stories about minority groups of migrant cultures in indexical, iconic, and symbolic forms. The occurred events implemented the concept of multiculturalism and reflected aspects of religion, socio-culture, economics, art and design. This study provides a concrete picture of how diversity and cultural differences are not only recognized and accommodated, yet, also how minority groups can maintain and express their cultural identity amidst diversity and cultural differences.

Abstract

Tri Dharma temples in Bali are spread almost throughout the district to accommodate the religious, social, and cultural needs of the Chinese ethnic group and adherents of the Tri Dharma Religion. In traditional Chinese culture, the concept of cosmology and religion from residential, religious, to monument buildings has a long history. Some Tri Dharma temples in Bali have been around for more than 50 years and have historical value. However, since the beginning of the planning of the establishment/development, TITD in Bali has not had a proper building layout drawing document as an archive or architectural or interior data. Therefore, an effort is needed to inventory and archive the TITD layout drawing data in Bali. The solution to this data inventory and archive is to conduct observations, measurements, and interviews and make technical and graphic drawings by utilizing architectural and graphic softwares (AutoCAD dan Adobe Photoshop). Through this documentation and inventory of architectural drawings, TITD can provide benefits in preserving cultural heritage, recovery and restoration, design references, education and research, security and maintenance.

Abstract

Technology has penetrated the creative industry, particularly in the Visual Communication Design sector, particularly in the field of visual design tools. One clear example of this technological advancement is the Canva instant design platform. Canva has become a widely used design application due to its user-friendly design features. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the influence and impact of instant design platforms, specifically Canva, on the creative thinking skills of Visual Communication Design (DKV) students. Data collection was conducted through an experimental method involving 30 respondents. Respondents were divided into two groups: users of the Canva instant design platform and users of the Adobe family of conventional design platforms. Based on the results of the data processing and experiment, it can be concluded that the Canva instant design platform has a significant impact on students' creative thinking patterns, particularly in terms of fluency in expressing ideas visually. The findings indicate that Canva users tend to have higher creative thinking scores than Adobe users, with average scores in the moderate creative range. Assessment was conducted using a creative thinking rubric with five main indicators: fluency, originality, elaboration, symbolism, and flexibility.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of symbolic meaning in gender transformation within the Baris Kekupu dance of Banjar Lebah through the medium of documentary film. Previous studies tend to frame gender transformation merely as a shift in performer roles; however, this research positions it as a process of reinterpreting meaning in relation to sacred values in Balinese culture. Drawing upon the concept of Rwa Bhineda - a principle of balance between two opposing yet complementary forces - this study argues that the presence of female dancers in Baris Kekupu does not diminish its sacredness but instead represents a symbolic balance between masculinity and femininity. This research employs a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis based on Ferdinand de Saussure, focusing on the relationship between signifier and signified within the visual and narrative elements of the documentary film. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and literature review, and were integrated into the production of an expository documentary film structured using a three-act narrative framework. The findings reveal that the meaning of gender transformation is constructed through aesthetic elements such as movement, costume, and butterfly symbolism, and further reinforced through cinematographic techniques that shape visual narratives. This study demonstrates that documentary film functions not only as a medium of documentation but also as a cultural design practice that actively reframes public perception of gender and sacredness. Thus, the concept of Reframing Gender and Sacred Balance provides a critical framework for understanding gender transformation as an integral part of cultural equilibrium in Balinese tradition

Abstract

Sign systems in Islamic educational environments are often designed primarily as navigational tools, while Islamic identity is applied only as decorative ornamentation. This study develops a contextual sign system for Pondok Pesantren Ribath Al-Falah, Mataram City, through a geosemiotic visual transformation approach integrating Islamic geometry, symbolic color, and bilingual typography. The novelty of this study lies in positioning Islamic geometric principles not merely as aesthetic elements, but as structural components regulating hierarchy, modularity, and visual consistency within the signage system. The research responds to navigation difficulties and low environmental visibility identified through questionnaires, field observations, and user responses within the pesantren environment. A descriptive qualitative method was employed using a Design Thinking framework supported by Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory. Islamic geometric patterns, symbolic green color, and Arabic–Latin typography were transformed into a modular Environmental Graphic Design system consisting of directional, identification, and regulatory signage. The findings indicate that repetitive geometric structures, modular layouts, and consistent information hierarchy contribute to symbolic representation and navigational communication simultaneously. User evaluations also suggested positive responses regarding legibility, visibility, and semantic clarity of the proposed signage system. Overall, this study contributes a contextual Environmental Graphic Design approach integrating Islamic visual identity and wayfinding communication within Islamic educational environments.
