Abstract

Stunting is still a problem around the world, particularly Indonesia where the prevalence of stunting in 2020 was 26.92%. The short-term impact of stunting included an increased risk of morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases, while, long-term impacts of stunting can cause obesity, impaired cognitive function, and work productivity. One of the efforts to prevent stunting is the use of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook by pregnant women and children aged under 5 years which has not been implemented properly. This community service activity aims to provide training in filling out the MCH handbook and educate the public on the importance of monitoring stunting in babies and children. Methods for implementing this activity include lecture in presentation form, discussion, and training approaches. A pre-test and post-test were carried out before and after this activity. A total of 80 participants took part in this activity, including the Head of Kertosono District, the Head of Banaran Village, the Head of the Kertosono Community Health Center and his staff, health cadres, and mothers who have stunted children, consisting of 37 Banaran's health cadres and mothers with stunted toddlers (72% of total stunted children in Banaran). It was found that there was an increase in participants' ability to fill out the MCH Handbook; before the activity, the mean pre-test score was 77.03 ± 16.64 and the post-test score was 88.65 ± 12.508. Training in understanding how to fill out the MCH Handbook to prevent stunting is very effective.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition where the mass of red blood cell (RBC) decrease from its normal value. Anemia was caused by some factors such as mother’s education, mother’s age, family income, and cigarette smoke exposure. The purpose of this study is to analyze factors associated with anemia in preschool children. The design of this study was cross-sectional. A cluster sampling was used to select the sample of 281 children. The data obtained from questionnaires and examined hemoglobin levels using hemoglobinometer digital. The data analyze using chi-square test and logistic regression test. The result of the study showed that 32% of preschool children were anemic. The significant factors associated with anemia were mother’s education, mother’s age, family income, and cigarette smoke exposure (p<0.05). We can conclude that need further socialization in the community about food, health and nutrition behaviors, and health and environmental service to prevent anemia in preschool children.

Abstract

Background: Stunted growth in height, caused by chronic malnutrition, is most prevalent among children in Indonesia, with the highest rates observed in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. The balance of macronutrients and micronutrients plays a crucial role in regulating IGF-1, which is essential for height growth. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the differences in macronutrient and micronutrient levels, as well as IGF-1, between stunted and normal children, and to examine their impact on the incidence of stunting. Methods: The research was conducted in Langke Rembong District, Manggarai Regency, from October to December 2024. This case-control study involved 80 respondents, comprising 40 children in the stunted group and 40 in the normal group. Nutritional intake was assessed using a 24-hour food recall and analyzed with the Nutrisurvey 2007 application, with results compared to the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). IGF-1 levels were measured from serum using the ELISA test. Univariate statistical tests and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to analyze the differences in macro and micronutrient as well as IGF-1 between the two groups and their impact on the incidence of stunting. Results: There were significant differences in the intake of macronutrients, including carbohydrates, protein, and fat (p-value<0.001); micronutrients, including vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, magnesium, iron, zinc, and phosphorus (p-value<0.001), as well as vitamin C (p-value=0.018) and calcium (p-value=0.007); and in IGF-1 levels (p-value=0.030) between stunted and normal children. Children aged 24-60 months had a stunting risk of 38.07 and 25.38 when deficient in vitamin B1 and vitamin B6, respectively. Conclusions: To combat and prevent stunting, it is crucial to monitor micronutrient intake, particularly vitamins B1 and B6.

Abstract

BackgroundDengue infection in children globally shows a significant increasing trend in incidence and remains a heavy public health burden. Dengue infection can progress rapidly to death, especially in children. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an inflammatory biomarker that represents an immune response to the disease. This study investigated NLR as a risk factor of dengue infection severity in children. MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted involving 237 children, (110 girls and 127 boys) aged 1-18 years with dengue infection. Patients were categorized into dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) according to WHO 2011 criteria. Demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, and hematological parameters, including hemoglobin (Hb), leukocyte count, thrombocyte count, hematocrit (HCT), and NLR, were extracted. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. ResultsThe study demonstrated that 59.9% of cases were classified as DF and 40.1% as DHF, with a mean age of 9.99 ± 4.84 years. The mean NLR was 0.99 ± 0.98 in DHF and 1.51 ± 1.38 in DF. Univariate regression analysis stated that NLR≥2 was associated with dengue severity. However, multivariate regression analysis stated that NLR was not a risk factor of dengue severity, adjusted from demographic characteristics and hematologic parameters. Hemoglobin and platelets are the independent factors of dengue severity. ConclusionNeutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is a simple biomarker but not a risk factor of dengue fever severity in children. There is evidence suggesting that the relationship between NLR and dengue fever severity is complex, with varying trends in different phases of the disease.
