Abstract

Tarekat tasawuf has been established in Negeri Sembilan since 1900 and began to strengthen its existence in spiritual activities such as the implementation of zikr tarekat tasawuf activities among the local community. This article will highlight the impact of implementing the zikr activities tarekat tasawuf, which is implemented periodically on the spiritual strengthening of the community in Negeri Sembilan. A qualitative approach is used involving library studies, review of relevant documents, and interviews with the Registrar of Tarekat, Tasawuf Division of the Negeri Sembilan Mufti Department, and the Syeikh of the tarekat involved. Basically, there are 13 Sufi practice centers around Negeri Sembilan that conduct regular zikr activities that impact the community. The existence of tarekat practice centers in Negeri Sembilan has been plotted to see the distribution and centralization of tarekat centers. In addition, the form of zikr practiced in the zikr ceremony is also explained through a simple framework built. The results also showed that the Seremban district is the highest area with a tarekat practice center. Indirectly, the zikr activities, tarekat tasawuf, have provided space for the local community to engage in more systematic spiritual activities. The efforts implemented by the Sufi tarekat practice center in Negeri Sembilan are expected to be used as an example by other states in Malaysia so that the community is more interested in the Sufi tarekat zikr ceremony.

Abstract

Fiqh, or in another term were called as Islamic jurisprudence, are the conceptions which are required by the Muslims to organize their interests in all aspects of life, provide the basics of the system of worship, administration, commerce, politics, social, and civilization. This article aims to trace and elaborate on the term "Civilization Fiqh.," or known as “Fiqh Peradaban”. It was initiated by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) towards its one-century birth. By exploring and unraveling the genealogy of substantive thinking on the countenance of NU Fiqh as the epistemological basis for the ideas of “Civilization Fiqh”. The library method is used in writing this article. This article uses a descriptive-analytic approach; it tries to explain in an analytical-consistent manner through rigorous reading to unravel the transmission of the NU Fiqh reasoning constructions to obtain a fresh and modern formulation of "Civilization Fiqh.” The results of the discussion of this article include 1) It needs reading and interpretation of the reasoning of the Pesantren tradition to redefine the Islamic scientific tradition, which is seen as less adaptive to the changing realities of the new world order but has not lost its identity by the currents of modernity; 2) NU needs to expand the discussion of “Civilization Fiqh” not only on political issues and the nation-state. This genealogically was carried about simultaneously by NU activists, academics, ulama, even PBNU itself (2000-2019). Issues related to human rights (labor fiqh), injustice, gender (women fiqh), extraordinary crime (anti-corruption fiqh), and environmental destruction (energy fiqh, waste management fiqh). So it is no exaggeration if “Civilization Fiqh" in the future can discuss the reality of 21st-century society: free economy, internet technology society of think, building the smallest nation element: family with counter-discourse which capture the trending issue of childfree, demography fiqh, etc.

Abstract

This article explores the intricate dynamics among Sufi elites in Cibingbin, highlighting the significant tensions within this distinctive group. The Sufi community is deeply divided, engaging in intense debates and frequent confrontations with each other. Central to these disputes are issues surrounding the Nasab dialectics, an ideology associated with the habaib that stresses the concept of voluntarism among the Sufi elite. These internal debates are most intense between the habaib faction, known as Kanzus Sholawat Cibingbin, and the local religious authorities, referred to as Kyai Kampung. As each group digs in and solidifies their doctrinal positions, the struggle for dominance in the public sphere becomes more pronounced. This phenomenon, which aligns with Habermas's theories regarding the legitimacy of power in public spaces, has unexpectedly fueled the momentum of the Laskar Walisongo movement. Despite the apparent weakening of the habaib's defensive stance, both the habaib and the Kyai Kampung have maintained considerable local influence. The ongoing power struggle highlights the complex interplay between belief, influence and control within this segment of the Sufi community. Ultimately, they have made public spaces an arena not just for collective imagery, but also the most vital part of the organisation’s sustainability or spirit.

Abstract

This study addresses the crucial issue of communication inefficiencies within religious organisations, which often lead to leadership fragmentation, operational confusion, and public misperception. Focusing on the Naqshabandiyyah Sufi Practice Centre (NSPC) in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, the research explores how strategic organisational communication enhances management decision-making in a spiritually structured institution. The objective is to analyse the roles of vertical and horizontal communication in ensuring administrative fluidity, leadership continuity, and public trust in the tarekat’s leadership. Employing a qualitative, descriptive-exploratory approach, the study utilizes document and content analysis to examine internal communications and management practices. The findings reveal that vertical communication supports the clear delegation of authority, vision alignment, and structured leadership formation, while horizontal communication facilitates collaboration, social outreach, and inter-agency coordination. The study also highlights how communication practices rooted in spiritual wisdom contribute to institutional legitimacy and organisational effectiveness. Ultimately, this article contributes to the field of Islamic management and communication by proposing a two-way, value-based communication model suited to the complexities of contemporary spiritual institutions operating within modern governance frameworks.

Abstract

Hadith studies have experienced stagnation compared to Qur’anic studies, which continue to develop with various new ideas. This stagnation is caused by the dominance of sanad analysis, debates over the status of hadith as a secondary source in Islam, and the use of certain hadiths to reject reform. One of the hadiths often cited to oppose renewal is the prohibition against lying about the Prophet Muhammad, as narrated by al-Bukhārī. This study aims to re-examine the hadith prohibiting fabricating statements about the Prophet and the hadith on renewal (tajdīd) using the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer. This approach emphasizes the concepts of fusion of horizons and effective historical consciousness to revitalize hadith studies in the modern context. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. The analysis focuses on two key hadiths: the prohibition against lying about the Prophet Muhammad (HR. al-Bukhārī No. 1291) and the hadith on tajdīd (HR. Abū Dāwūd No. 4291). The study presents two main conclusions. First, the stagnation in hadith studies results from rigid traditionalism, where hadith is primarily treated as a theological doctrine rather than an epistemological paradigm. Second, classical and modern hadith sciences have yet to fully ensure the authenticity of hadith texts exactly as intended by the Prophet. However, the prohibition against fabricating hadith implicitly demands the purification of hadith from additional narrators’ insertions. Thus, this article proposes originalization as an implicit message of HR. al-Bukhārī and an application of the tajdīd hadith from Abū Dāwūd. Originalization is expected to open new discussions in hadith studies, such as hadith revisionism, the phenomenology of memory, and the archaeology and anthropology of narrators. Abū Dāwūd No. 4291).

Abstract

Certain prophetic traditions (Hadīth) are still read through a textual-absolutist lens that treats situational speech as timeless law, often generating interpretations that feel ethically troubling or socially unworkable today. This article proposes event contextualization as a practical framework for reinterpreting “problematic” Hadīth by reconstructing the triggering event and its immediate social setting (asbāb al-wurūd), mapping variant transmissions, and then reassessing the report’s normative force in light of Qur’anic moral horizons and maqāṣid al-sharīʿah. Using qualitative textual analysis and contextual hermeneutics—supported by matn and sanad checks—the study examines recurring clusters of narrations frequently invoked in contemporary debates, especially on gender, minority relations, apostasy, and political obedience. The analysis suggests that many interpretive dead-ends arise when context-bound directives are universalized without attending to the occasion, audience, and intent of the Prophet’s instruction. By operationalizing event reconstruction alongside purposive ethical reasoning, the article offers a replicable way to distinguish time-sensitive instructions from transferable moral principles. It argues that this approach strengthens contemporary fiqh al-ḥadīth by reducing interpretive overreach while preserving the Prophetic moral aim.
