Abstract

Market demand for maize (Zea mays L.) in Indonesia is increasing from time to time along with the increasing demand for food and livestock for fodder. However, current farming practices in the upland area where maize usually cultivated, threaten the sustainability of maize production. Conservation farming could be an alternative to reduce land and soil degradation caused by current farming practices. A factorial randomized block designed field experiment was conducted to determine the combined effect of biogeotextile with cover crop residues and soil tillage on growth and yield of maize. The treatments included utilization of Mendong plant’s mat (Fimbrystilis globulosa) as biogeotextile material and four cover crop species: Sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea), Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), and Mucuna (Mucuna spp). The results showed that the biogeotextile mat and cover crop residues, but not soil tillage, increased maize height and the number of leaves, and yield of maize. Biogeotextile mulch increased maize yield up to 43% compared to control. The highest yield (8.0 t/ha) was shown by the combination of biogeotextile application with cowpea residues. Conservation farming is prospective for improving plant production and protecting land from degradation.

Abstract

The agricultural sector is one of the contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in Indonesia. The inventory of greenhouse gases in the agricultural sector is not only carried out on land management, but also in the livestock sub sector. Tuban Regency, East Java Province has great potential to contribute to greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector considering that the area of agricultural land and livestock population in this area is very high. This study aims to carry out an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector and potential mitigation actions in the same sector. The results of the research are expected to provide input for the Tuban Regency Government in designing mitigation actions that are feasible to implement. The greenhouse gas emission inventory is calculated using Tier-1 IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) 2006 guidelines by multiplying activity data with emission factors according to IPCC standards. Activity data used for calculating GHG emission comes from secondary data. Meanwhile, the mitigation options obtained from interviews with representatives of farmer groups in Tuban Regency .The results show that the greenhouse gas emissions of the agricultural sector in Tuban Regency in 2019 is 1,665.67 Gg CO2-eq with details of the agricultural sub-sector of 1,092.50 Gg CO2-eq and the livestock sub-sector of 573.17 Gg CO2-eq. In the agricultural sub-sector, Plumpang Subdistrict occupies the top position as a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and Tuban Subdistrict is the lowest position. Meanwhile, in the livestock sub-sector, Kerek subdistrict occupies the top position in contributing to GHG emissions and the lowest is in Tuban subdistrict. Through the implementation of balanced fertilization mitigation options and the use of low-emission rice varieties, the GHG emission in Tuban Regency can be reduced by up to 156,43 Gg CO2-eq. Both options are selected by farmers because it is easier and cheaper without relying on others.

Abstract

Women are generally spend their time with activities at the domestic level, such as cooking, taking care of children and other household activities. There are many productive activities that can be developed at the domestic level, both micro and medium scale that can be done. So it is necessary to introduce activities that can improve the family economy done by women. One of them is the innovation of post-harvest production of Tuban siwalan fruit by making siwalan pudding. The purpose of this Community Service activity is to increase the insight of the PKK of Bandungrejo Village, Plumpang Subdistrict, Tuban Regency as a partner in terms of innovation to improve the economy through training. The method used is a situational analysis assessment and training. The partner's level of understanding of the material was assessed using a pre-test and post-test. The results show that there is an increase in the understanding of the training participants on information related to the nutrition of the siwalan, the economic potential of the siwalan, the distribution of the siwalan and the lack of innovation in the processing of the siwalan. In order to increase the low selling value of the results of siwalan pudding making, it is necessary to study the packaging and marketing strategies of the siwalan pudding products. PKK must collaborate with other parties to improve their knowledge on packaging and marketing.

Abstract

Trichoderma sp. is a type of fungus that exists in the root zone of plants and is able to protect plants from disease. This biological agent is known to be able to overcome the attack of fusarium wilt which often attacks chili plants. Tuban Regency became a chili center area because in 2022 it managed to produce 36,528 tons of cayenne pepper and 6,760.98 tons of large chili. One of the sub-districts in Tuban Regency that has the highest chili production rate is Grabagan Sub-district with a production rate of 81.91%. The high rate of chili production, both cayenne pepper and large chili, is proportional to the increasing challenges of chili cultivation. This community service activity has the main objective of introducing biopesticides from the biological agent Trichoderma sp. to chili farmers in Grabagan District, Tuban Regency as a solution to chili wilt disease caused by the fungus Fusarium sp. Community Service activities initiated by the Faculty of Agriculture Lecturer Team of Sunan Bonang University Tuban have been carried out by involving 13 chili farmers in Grabagan District at the Grabagan District Extension and Food Security Center (BPKP). This activity contains counseling related to the propagation of Trichoderma sp. fungi in a simple way and sustainable agriculture with the concept of Back to Nature. The activity was complemented by hands-on practice of Trichoderma sp. fungi propagation using rice as a substrate. Based on the questionnaire distributed to the participants, it was found that 10 out of 13 chili farmers in Grabagan sub-district still depend on the use of synthetic pesticides. After receiving the counseling, 12 out of 13 chili farmers expressed their willingness to implement environmentally friendly agriculture by utilizing biological agents Trichoderma sp.

Abstract

Floods are natural occurrences with the potential to cause damage to ecosystems and pose significant threats to human life, resulting in the destruction of property, infrastructure, and socioeconomic challenges. In recent times, flooding in the Sub-Watershed of Bengawan Solo has been linked to the overflowing Kening River in Tuban County. Aim: This study aims to produce a flood susceptibility map to mitigate the frequency of flood occurrences as well as facilitate effective planning for flood disaster risk management. Methodology and results: Flood data is collected from 2016 to 2023 through field surveys, Sentinel-1 satellite imagery, and data from the Development Planning Agency, Tuban County. Integrating remote sensing data from satellite imagery (PlanetScope, Sentinel-2), geographic information systems (GIS), and spatial modeling techniques, a flood susceptibility map is developed for the Kening River catchment. The occurrence of floods in the Kening River area is associated with various factors (11 variables) assessed through the frequency ratio approach, including profil curvature, LS factor, aspect, rainfall, river distance, road distance, building density 100 m, road density 100 m, vegetation type, normalized difference water index (NDWI), and soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI). The results show flood susceptibility maps utilizing frequency ratio (FR) and convolutional neural network (CNN) techniques. The flood susceptibility map obtained through the CNN method demonstrates a notably high AUC value. The model development generated a validation AUC value of 0.857 for training and 0.856 for testing. Conclusion, significance and impact study: This research provides an understanding into the factors that influence the occurrence of floods in the Kening River catchment area. It also emphasizes the benefit of advanced machine learning approaches in mapping the susceptibility of floods. Furthermore, this study has the potential to be helpful in guiding regional policy decisions and result in enhanced flood risk management measures in Tuban County.
