Abstract

Abstract

Sharia law found in the Qur'an still requires interpretation and has the potential to evolve. Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im answers the gap between sharia and issues of modernity. The deconstruction of sharia is used in the problem of Islamic law with current issues using an analytical knife in the form of Mahmud Thaha's theory of legal evolution, the theory of nasikh mansukh, Makiyyah and Madaniyyah, the meaning of gender texts and the concept of sharia on human rights. All Muslims in the world have the right to apply Islamic law as long as it does not violate the rights of other people, other groups or other religions

Abstract

This study explores the integration of universal Islamic values with local culture through an analysis of the interpretation of QS Al-Baqarah verse 177 within the framework of Islamic indigenization (pribumisasi Islam) as conceptualized by Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur). The verse is chosen for its emphasis on the principles of al-birr (righteousness), which encompasses not only theological aspects but also social and humanistic dimensions. Using a qualitative approach through literature review, this research examines how Gus Dur interprets righteousness as concrete social action and how he articulates these values within the pluralistic context of Indonesian society. The findings indicate that Gus Dur views QS Al-Baqarah:177 as theological justification for the integration of Islamic teachings and local culture, where values such as justice, equality, and solidarity with the marginalized serve as the foundation of social ethic

Abstract

The global ecological crisis has sparked widespread debate about the human-nature relationship since the 1960s. Lynn White, Jr. criticized the anthropocentric tendencies in Judeo-Christian traditions, which he argued contributed to environmental degradation. In contrast, the principles of environmental conservation in the Qur’an remain underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining ecological concepts in the Qur’an and their implications for environmental sustainability. Using a qualitative literature review methodology, we systematically analyze relevant Qur’anic verses and scientific interpretations to elucidate these principles. Our findings reveal two key concepts: first, the Qur’an integrates environmental stewardship with faith, asserting that true belief necessitates environmental responsibility. Second, the Qur’an designates humans as stewards (khalīfah) of the Earth, tasked with its wise management and care. This study contributes to the discourse on religion and ecology by highlighting the potential role of the Qur’an in promoting sustainable environmental practices

Abstract

Since the 19th century, positivism has prevailed in modern science via empirical observation, sensory verification, and objective reason. Although it has propelled advancements in science and technology, positivism fosters reductionism, thereby marginalizing unquantifiable entities, including spiritual and metaphysical realities. This constraint is particularly manifest in Islamic studies, notably in Sufi exegesis of the Qur'an, which depends on symbolism, inner signs, and spiritual experiences. Ibn ‘Arabi, a distinguished Sufi philosopher, offers speculative and figurative exegeses in texts such as al-Futūḥāt al-Makkiyyah and Fuṣūṣ al-Ḥikam, sometimes criticised for straying from literal orthodoxy. Az-Zahabi, a distinguished hadith scholar, denounced these interpretations as perilous, emphasising textual integrity and rational criteria over spiritual insights. These discussions highlight epistemological challenges between empirical rigor and transcendent sources of knowledge. This study uses a qualitative library research methodology to epistemologically examine Az-Zahabi’s critique of Ibn ‘Arabi’s interpretations of the Qur’an. An interdisciplinary approach integrates the philosophy of science with Qur’anic exegesis. Primary sources encompass Az-Zahabi’s Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalā’ and Mizān al-Iʿtidal, in addition to the principal works of Ibn ‘Arabi. Secondary sources offer theoretical and contextual assistance. Data analysis employs descriptive and interpretive methodologies, including literature reviews, textual analyses to reveal interpretive assumptions, epistemological evaluations, and comparative syntheses. The findings demonstrate the insufficiency of positivism for esoteric religious knowledge, mirroring Az-Zahabi's argument centered on orthodoxy. Ibn ‘Arabi’s approach prioritises spiritual realisation above empirical constraints, facilitating a more profound understanding of texts. Critiquing positivism fosters an awareness of multiple Islamic epistemologies and methodological diversity, facilitating a comprehensive study of sacred texts.
