Abstract

Writing is the process of using symbols like letter of the alphabet, punctuation and spaces to communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form. To write clearly it is essential to understand the basic system of a language. In learning writing, most of students could not achieve the 70 MCC. There were problem faced by the students in studying writing especially in descriptive text at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 2 Lahewa  in 2021/2022 namely: the students were lack of vocabularies, the students were unable to describe the object and the students were unable to identify topic, main idea, content from descriptive text. Thus, to overcome these problems, the researchers conducted a research by using Writer Workshop Strategy at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 2 Lahewa in 2021/2022. So, to achieve the purpose, the researchers used Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research has been conducted in two cycles, which each cycle consisted of two meetings, and each meeting consisted of four steps, they were planning, action, observation, and reflection. The result of the data in Cycle I showed there were 2 students (8%); 5 students (20%), 3 students (12%), 10 students (41%) and 4 students (16%). While in Cycle II there were 15 students (62%) got score among 86-100, 5 students (20%) got score among 71-85, and 4 students (16%) got score among 56-70. Based on the result, it is concluded that Writer Workshop Strategy improved the students’ writing ability in descriptive text at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 2 Lahewa in 2021/2022.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum assumed the integration of local wisdom into teaching materials because it contained noble values that could develop knowledge to shape students' character and increase their motivation to learn. English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Alasa still used general teaching materials and had not specifically incorporated the local wisdom of the Nias tribe. One of the Nias local wisdoms that could be integrated into English learning was folktales in the form of legends for Narrative Text material. Thus, this research aimed to produce visual book teaching materials based on local wisdom that were suitable and practical to use. This research used the Research and Development method, employing the 4D development model. The results showed that the visual book teaching materials developed by the researcher were very suitable and practical to use, as evidenced by the results of the validation and practicality questionnaires. Validation results by language experts, with an average score of 4, were in the very feasible category with a percentage of 100%. Validation results by media experts, with an average score of 3.8, were in the very feasible category with a percentage of 95%. Validation results by material experts, with an average score of 3.86, were in the very feasible category with a percentage of 96.66%. The results of the practicality test by teachers and students were in the very practical category, with the highest percentage being 100% and the lowest percentage being 88.66%. Based on these results, it was concluded that the development of English teaching materials based on local wisdom for the tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Alasa was feasible and practical for use in the learning process. It was recommended that teachers develop teaching materials based on local wisdom in the region for other learning content.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the concept of partnership management occured at PKBM Ziona with partner institutions. This research was descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The data source were the Head of PKBM Ziona and a staff member. Data collection techniques were observation, interviews and documentation with interview guide and documentation guide instruments. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, as well as drawing conclusions and verification. The research results showed that: : 1). The process of partnership they did were mapping, digging and collecting information, analyzing information, cooperation exploration, making agreements, signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), implementation of activities, monitoring and evaluation, improvement, and further planning; 2). The concept of partnership management they did in some stages, namely (1) Partnership planning; (2) Implementation of the partnership includes realizing internal partnership activities industrial culture programs, as well as communication and coordination carried out by stakeholders who play a role; (3) Partnership evaluation includes monitoring and evaluation, reporting partnership activities, analysis of supporting factors and factors inhibiting partnerships include efforts to overcome obstacles, determination achievement of the objectives of partnership activities, benefits of partnerships, and development partnership. Both sides parties seek cooperation that is mutually helpful, complementary, and mutually beneficial. The collaboration that occurred has gone well and been successful.

Abstract

This research was motivated by initial observations which showed low student learning outcomes, which can be seen based on the average score on exam results, namely 60. The average score is still below the minimum completeness criteria (MCC) set by the school, namely 67, in English subjects. This shows that student learning outcomes in English learning are still low. This research aims to implement inquiry learning strategies in improving students' thinking skills and improving listening skills in English at SMP Negeri 6 Gunungsitoli. This research focuses on finding out the teaching methods used by teachers to improve students' thinking skills, implementation, assessment in learning with research results obtained through student observations in learning activities, questions to improve one of the students' competencies in listening skills, and the researcher's field notes. while carrying out research. The informants for this research were class 8, totaling 7 people. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The results obtained from this research include: 1). Implementation of the learning process using the inquiry method. 2). Observation results showing improvement from the first cycle to the second cycle at the second meeting. 3). Implementation of listening tests for students makes students like learning English and through MCC. The average value presentation obtained is 90%. This shows an increase from cycles I and II student learning motivation through implementing the inquiry learning model in the When I was a child material with an average score of 90% in the very high category. The application of the inquiry learning model can increase students' activeness in learning, improve students' thinking abilities, and increase the completeness of learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research focuses on improving the promotion of tourism villages using technology to create English-language content. The research uses the Four-D model to create a website-based digital promotional media for Tumori Village in North Sumatra. The website showcases the village's uniqueness, traditional houses, history, etc. The results show that the website can boost tourism promotion globally, contribute to the local economy, and increase village visibility on search engines and social media. The research aims to provide guidance for other villages in developing effective English-language content, enhancing their appeal to international travelers and bringing sustainable benefits to local communities.

Abstract

This study aims to develop culture-based English learning in the 9th-grade students of UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli Alo'oa by using a research amd development method. The development process is based on the Borg and Gall development research model, simplified into three stages: a) Preliminary Study, b) Product Development, and c) Finalization and testing of the product that integrates local cultural aspects. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires for developing teaching materials to measure the effectiveness of the learning process. The results indicate that the integration of local cultural elements in English learning is enhances student motivation, enriches their understanding of language and culture, recognize the significance of cultural context in their language acquisition and develops a framework integrating local cultural elements into English language that connected to the local cultural contexts lesson that affected their understanding and application of the language. This research recommends applying similar methods in other schools to enhance contextual and relevant English learning.

Abstract

Reading is the skill every university students have to master. However, the reading skill especially reading comprehension of the 3rd semester students of English Department at IKIP Gunungsitoli had not yet achieved the stated minimum achievement score. It was difficult for them to comprehend a reading text of the reading comprehension itself. Thus, the problem was decided to be solved through a classroom action research by using the Guided Imagery Strategy. The purposes are to find out whether the strategy can improve their reading comprehension and to discover the factor/s that influences the improvement. There were 27 students as the subject of the research, especially the class B of the 3rd semester of English Department at IKIP Gunungsitoli, year 2020/2021. The research was conducted in 3 cycles with five meetings of each cycle. The data was gathered through the observation sheets, field notes, interviews, tasks and tests. The result of the research revealed that the Guided Imagery Strategy could improve the subjects’ reading comprehension. The data showed that the students’ average score and target of success were increased each cycle. The average score in cycle I was 52,6 (59,2% target of success), then increased up to 71,1 in cycle II (66,6% target of success) and 81,1 in cycle III (81,4% target of success). Furthermore, the factors that influenced the improvement were material, media, classroom activities, classroom management, teaching strategy and teacher’s approach. Summing up, the Guided Imagery Strategy gave positive improvement toward the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

Reading is a process that is carried out and used by the reader to get the message from the writer. Reading improves the ability to understand words and improve thinking skills, increase creativity and also gets acquainted with new ideas. Based on the observation in SMK N 1 Gunungsitoli Barat especially class XI IPA 2, the researcher found that the students were difficult to get some information of the text and the students unable to understand the meaning of the text. This research was conducted to improve students reading comprehension through Mind Mapping technique in narrative text at the eleventh grade of SMK N 1 Gunungsitoli Barat in 2021/2022. Through Classroom Action Research (CAR, the research was conducted in two cycles. The result of the research revealed the Mind Mapping technique improves students’ ability in Reading Comprehension. Hence, the English teacher of SMK N 1 Gunungsitoli Barat were suggested to use Mind Mapping technique to improve the students ability in reading comprehension because the strategy guides the students’ ideas and also helped in finding out the ideas in reading.

Abstract

There were some problems that students faced when speaking, such as: difficult in conveying their ideas, lack of vocabulary, incorrect pronunciation, and the strategy that used by the teacher that monotonous and boring. The purpose of this research was to improve the students' speaking skills through Talking Stick Strategy at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023. The researcher conducted this research by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). Instrument of the research were observation sheets, field notes and oral test. In Cycle I, the average percentage of the researcher's completed activities was 79% (good), and the percentage of the students' completed activities was 72.5% (adequate). In this cycle, the students could not achieve the Minimum Competence Criterion (MCC) of 70, students' average score was 51 (less). All the students scored ≤ 70, with the highest score was 63 and the lowest score was 38. Furthermore, in Cycle II, the average percentage of the researcher's completed activities was 95% (very good), and the students' completed activities was 91% (very good). In this cycle, the students had achieved the Minimum Competence Criterion (MCC) of 70, the students' average score was 79 (good). None of the students scored ≤ 70, with the highest score was 81 and the lowest score was 75. Based on the results of this research, the researcher concluded that Talking Stick Strategy could improve the students' speaking skill in the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze whether the content of “Bahasa Inggris SMA” textbook in the part of its speaking material is in line with Dat Bao’s theory. This research used descriptive research type with the content analysis. The data was English textbook “Bahasa Inggris SMA” used by eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Santu Xaverius Gunungsitoli that consist of eight Chapters. The research instruments were textbook evaluation sheet and interview sheet. The data was then analyzed by using assessment rubric of Dat Bao’s theory that consists of four main aspects, namely; linguistic support, content-based and affective support, skill support, and diversity and flexibility. Thereafter, the researcher presented the data with percentage of scoring and interpreted it into a description paragraph. The result of study showed that English textbook “Bahasa Inggris SMA” did not successfully fulfill Dat Bao’s theory, where the linguistic support was (73.95%), content-based and affective support (48.43%), skill support (70.31%), and diversity and flexibility (58.31%). The percentage showed that it was still lacking of linguistic input in pronunciation section, lacking of supporting students’ cultural and visuals that support verbal learning, lacking of supporting communicative functions and strategies, and lacking of variety of speaking activities. From the research findings, the researcher suggested that the textbook needs to be developed in terms of its content of speaking materials. Subsequently, both ELT teacher and textbook writer should concern and pay attention with the content of the textbook suggested by Dat Bao’s theory.
