Abstract

Anterior tooth trauma often occurs in children because children are more active than adults and their coordination and assessment of conditions are not good enough, so they often fall while learning to walk, run, play and exercise. Trauma that occurs to a child's teeth can interfere speech, chewing, aesthetics and the eruption of permanent teeth, thereby disrupting the growth and development of the teeth and jaw. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the approach regarding the first treatment of trauma to primary teeth for parents and children. The choice of Community Service target at RA Al-Muttaqin was due to a request from the school principal as community leader. The prevalence of cavities in Indonesia is considerably high, with 57.6% of the population affected, but treatment is only sought by a mere 10.2%. In the Indramayu Regency of West Java, the limited access to dental care is attributed to the low number of dentists, which is a meagre 3%. The anxiety surrounding dental care often dissuade people, particularly children. Studies have highlighted the varying levels of anxiety in children. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the level of dental anxiety in students. Methods: Using a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design and a purposive sampling approach, we obtained 158 respondents who met the inclusion criteria. Data were taken using the Children Fear Survey Schedule-Dental Subscale (CSFSS-DS) questionnaire. Results: Dental anxiety levels were found in 142 (89.9%) children with low anxiety levels and about 16 (10.1%) children with high anxiety levels. There were 95 children aged 6-10 who had low anxiety and 8 child had high anxiety, then there were 47 children aged 11-13 years who had low anxiety, and 8 child had high anxiety. Conclusion: The level of dental anxiety is mainly dominated by children with mild dental anxiety (89.9%) and only a tiny percentage who have high dental anxiety (10.1%).

Abstract

Background: Caries is a problem that is most often found in children and adults. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have various obstacles both in their skills and in their cognition, which makes maintaining their oral hygiene very difficult. Objective: To determine the factors associated with dental caries in patients with ASD aged 6-12 years. Method: Scoping review using journals published in the last 10 years which can be accessed through Google Scholar and Pubmed databases using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method. Results: Both databases obtained 421 journals. Duplication filtering found 17 journals with the same title. Filtering titles that do not match the research topic leaves 365 journals. Journal screening through abstracts resulted in 40 journals. All journals were then screened for eligibility leaving 16 journals that met the criteria. Conclusion: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) provides many factors that can cause caries in children aged 6-12 years. Conditions experienced by children with ASD, such as limited motor movements, cognitive problems, eating patterns, oral cavity conditions, and limited access to health services, cause caries in children with ASD.

Abstract

Crowded teeth are one of the dental and oral health issues that need attention in Indonesia. Crowded teeth can be caused by genetic factors, growth abnormalities, or bad habits formed from a young age. Knowledge about the causes, impacts, prevention, and treatment of crowded teeth is important to enhance from an early age. The Community Service activity by the Faculty of Dentistry team from Trisakti University aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of the GBI HMJ Jakarta congregation in recognizing, preventing, and treating dental crowding issues. This activity involved 34 members of GBI HMJ Jakarta, consisting of administrators and the community. The educational material provided consists of the causes, effects, prevention, and treatment of crowded teeth. The training materials include simulations on how to brush teeth and use dental floss. The evaluation of the activity implementation shows an increase in knowledge with a significant difference in the average pre-test and post-test scores (p=0.000). This increase in knowledge is expected to reduce the negative impact of dental and oral health issues, particularly crowded teeth, in the community.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is the most common oral disease in children worldwide and has been considered the most important problem in the oral cavity. Children with Down Syndrome (DS) usually have impaired communication, cognitive, and motor development so that it can be an obstacle in maintaining oral health in children. Objectives: To determine the factors that influence the occurrence of dental caries in children with Down syndrome aged 6-12 years. Methods: Scoping review using the last 10 years of journals that can be accessed through Pubmed, EBSCO, and Google Scholar databases using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method. Results: From the three databases, we found 816 journals. Duplication filtering found 19 journals with the same title. Screening journals through abstracts obtained 125 journals. The entire journal was then screened for eligibility according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria and 6 journals were obtained that fit the criteria. Conclusion: Down syndrome (DS) children have a lower risk of dental caries due to an increase in salivary pH, salivary flow rate, and salivary electrolytes which cause conditions in the oral cavity to become alkaline. The role of parents in maintaining children's oral health is also very important in preventing dental caries in DS children.

Abstract

Background: Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative developmental defect of tooth enamel that affects one or more permanent first molars and may involve incisors. The clinical features of MIH can include demarcated opacities, post-eruptive enamel breakdown, atypical caries, atypical restorations, and missing teeth due to MIH. Molar incisor hypomineralization is a common enamel defect with a relatively high prevalence worldwide, ranging from 9.2% to 14.2%. Data on the prevalence of MIH and clinical features of MIH in Indonesia are still minimal. Objective: To observe the distribution of clinical features and severity of molar-incisor hypomineralization in children aged 8-10 years in Kemanggisan urban village. Materials and Methods: This study used a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional method. Data was collected through random sampling by examining 267 child subjects in the field. Results: The prevalence of MIH in Kemanggisan urban village was 29,2%. There was no significant difference in gender and age in the distribution of clinical features and severity levels. The highest prevalence of clinical features and severity levels were demarcated opacities and mild, at 9,6%. Conclusion: The most prevalent clinical feature and severity level was demarcated opacities and mild in children aged 8-10 years in Kemanggisan urban village.
