Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how students make mistakes when attempting to solve equality and inequality problems in trigonometry and algebra using the Newman method. A qualitative descriptive research methodology is employed in this study. Students enrolled in Manado State University's 2023–2024 Mathematics Education Study Program during their first semester served as the research subjects. Test and interview techniques are used in data collection. Three steps made up the data analysis in this study: reduction, data display, and data verification. Data analysis utilizing the Newman approach yielded the following conclusions: 5.6% encoding errors, 4.8% reading errors, 12% comprehension errors, 8.4% transformation errors, and 18.8% process skill errors were made when solving equation and inequality problems. The inability of pupils to comprehend the concept of the subject being explained, their lack of willingness to study, and their carelessness when reading and completing questions are the causes contributing to these blunders.

Abstract

One thing that can bridge the gap between culture and education is ethnomathematics. Ethnomathematics is a form of mathematics influenced by or based on culture. Through the application of ethnomathematics in education, especially mathematics education, will bring better understanding of students about both knowledge and culture of theirs. This way will help teacher for teaching cultural values in students so that cultural values which are part of the national character are embedded from an early age of student. The formation of this new scheme should be from the scheme that already exists in the student. Therefore, in teaching formal mathematics (school mathematics), teachers should start with informal mathematics which is applied by children in society. If a child has a good schema about mathematics used in daily basis increase the existing knowledge the teacher strengthens the existing schema or forms a new schema based on the existing schema.

Abstract

ABSTRACTTraditional weaving in Alor Regency, particularly in Batu Village, plays a vital role in preserving the community’s culture and economy. However, the weaving group in Batu Village still faces challenges in using natural dyes due to limited knowledge and skills in thread extraction and dyeing techniques, leading the community to rely more on synthetic dyes that are less environmentally friendly. Therefore, this community service activity was carried out through training and mentoring to improve the weaving group’s skills in utilizing natural materials as dyes. This activity was held in Batu Village on July 16–18, 2025, involving 20 members of the weaving group as activity partners. The methods used included lectures, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and mentoring in the processes of washing yarn, mordanting using alum, extracting moringa leaves, dyeing yarn, and drying. The results of the activity showed that training on the use of moringa leaves as a natural dye was able to improve participants’ understanding and skills in independently carrying out the yarn dyeing process. Additionally, the use of moringa leaves as a natural dye has the potential to increase the added value of woven products, support the use of environmentally friendly materials, and strengthen the economic empowerment of the local community. Keywords: Natural; Moringa; Training; Weaving; Traditional.
