Abstract

The objectives of this research are i) to examine New Zealands dairy sector and ii) to analyze the market integration and price transmission of Skim Milk Powder (SMP) of New Zealand and Indonesian market. The methods used are Augmented Dickey Fuller test, Johansen Cointegration test, and Vector Error Correction Model. The result indicates: 1) as trade partner, New Zealand is powerful due to its status as the largest dairy producer worldwide; therefore, Indonesia has less bargaining power and 2) The SMP market of both countries are integrated. The coefficient of long run equation variable indicates that every 10 percent changes of one market, the imported SMP price will adjust 10.97 percent, while the exported SMP price will adjust 9.12 percent. The loading vector coefficient indicates that Indonesia is the only party adjusting to long run disequilibrium. Policies to minimize the risks includes: i) buffer budget, ii) alternative suppliers and iii) futures trade.

Abstract

In the last ten years, the performance of Indonesia’s tea agribusiness has been decreased. It is shown by the decreasing of tea estate area by 2.18 percent per year, tea production decreased by 0.8 percent and export volume decreased by 1.07 percent per year. The Porter’s Diamond System analysis shows that the competitiveness of Indonesia’s tea agribusiness is still weak. The main component of Indonesia’s tea that supports each other are : 1) the resources factors with the domestic demand conditions, and also 2) the resources factors with the related and supporting industries. While in the supporting component, the government component only supports the resources factors component, and it’s clearly different with the chance component that supports all the main components. Finally, tea agribusiness development strategies in Indonesia was analyzed by using SWOT and Architecture Strategy, which were more directed to increase the performance of smallholders tea plantation by strengthening the role of farmer group and optimalizing the role of association. In the other hand, the strategies for government and private tea estate are more directed to increase the volume of production and product diversification which are important for improving the export oriented tea products. Other strategies that can be implied are 1) increasing the promotional activity and 2) spreading information about tea and its benefits to increase domestic tea consumption.

Abstract

Background: Brebes District, recognized as the largest shallot producer in Indonesia, continues to face challenges in ensuring the welfare of its shallot farmers. This situation emerged from a complex network of stakeholders involved in shallot agribusiness in the Brebes District, characterized by a significant presence of intermediaries. Purpose: This research aims to i) analyze the shallot supply chain in the Brebes District by applying the Food Supply Chain Network (FSCN) approach and ii) examine its performance through marketing margin and farmer share. Design/methodology/approach: Data was gathered through interviews with 83 shallot farmers and 12 marketing actors in the Brebes District. Additionally, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was conducted to gather strategic insights from all stakeholders involved in the shallot agribusiness in the Brebes District. The research used a qualitative approach to answer the FSCN analysis and a quantitative approach to measure the supply chain performance.Findings/Result: This study identified that the supply chain had clear objectives and structured relationships between actors. However, it was not optimized because the business process was not integrated into the long term. The supply chain involved multiple marketing channels, where each level of intermediary had involvement and impact on farmer share and margins. More direct marketing channels, such as Marketing Channel I, where farmers sell directly to village traders, offer the highest farmer share (89%) due to the absence of intermediaries like wholesalers. In contrast, channels involving more intermediaries, such as wholesalers in Channels III and V, result in higher total margins but a lower farmer share (81%). Conclusion: The FSCN analysis of shallots in the Brebes District reveals a complex marketing system with various channels. Direct marketing channels give farmers the highest share by removing intermediaries, while those with more intermediaries offer higher total margins but lower farmer shares. Reducing intermediaries is recommended to boost farmer incomes. Additionally, inefficiencies like poor coordination and limited access to market information hinder overall performance.Originality/value (State of the art): This study introduces a novel application of the FSCN approach to comprehensively analyze the shallot supply chain in Brebes District, Indonesia. The FSCN offers insights into the complex relationships between farmers, traders, and other actors, their challenges, and the potential for improving the system's efficiency. Abstract

Situ Udik Village faces household waste issues due to population growth and changing consumption patterns, leading to environmental pollution. The 2024 National Community Service Program by Indonesia Open University aims to address this problem by utilizing organic waste as compost to enhance agricultural productivity. The methods include expert-led socialization, compost-making training, and the application of simple technology using buckets as composters. The composting process involves burned rice husks, rice bran, and household organic waste, which are fermented for 21 days (about 3 weeks). The results indicate that the produced compost has a neutral pH and optimal fertility for use as a planting medium. This program not only reduces waste but also improves soil fertility and enhances community welfare through new economic opportunities. Moving forward, research will focus on analyzing the chemical composition of the planting medium and its impact on agricultural productivity. Keywords: Situ Udik Village, Compost, Household Waste

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship of vertical integration in the rice market in East Java Province, involving the producer, wholesaler, and retailer levels. The main focus of this research is to analyze price transmission between different market levels and the interconnection among market players within the rice supply chain. The method used is secondary data analysis in the form of weekly time series from January 2020 to August 2024, applying the Vector Autoregression (VAR) model and the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) stationarity test. The analysis results show that rice prices between market levels influence each other in a bidirectional manner, with a significant long-term effect from retail prices. The wholesale market also plays a crucial role in price transmission between market levels. These findings reflect the complex rice market structure in East Java, which requires further attention in formulating pricing policies to achieve sustainable stability.

Abstract

KPS-Bogor is one of the largest dairy cooperatives in Indonesia. The cooperativeconsists of 127 active farmers, produces an average of 78.8 liters of milk/person/day. However, the quantity and quality of milk produced is very volatile which causes fluctuations in the income of dairy farmers. Considered the role of cooperative to agricultural development, and its unique nature, risk analysis research is an interesting yet rarely conducted. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to analyze the agribusiness risks faced by the KPS-Bogor, and to analyze risk priorities faced by the KPS-Bogor. This research is a qualitative research, using Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Fishbone Diagram. The study results show that the cooperative faces 6 sources of risk that have the potential to cause losses , namely production risk (bacteria and the absence of SOPs for farming method), market risk (Dairy Processing Industry’s (DPI) market structure), financial risk (delayed payment of its member’s debt), legal risk (GMP standardization is not yet implemented), and human resource risk (low commitment of the workers). FMEA and Fishbone Diagram show that the low commitment of the workers, the absence of farming SOP, and the DPI market structure are the most risky sources which have highest level of severity, occurrence and detection that can cause losses to KPS-Bogor. Unussualy, this research found human resource risk valued higher than the production risk factor, which mainly become the main risk source in agricultural business.
