Abstract

The purpose of the research  is to assess the types of deixis and the prevailing deixis in the YouTube video of TEDx Talk. This article focuses on the researcher's explanation of the types of deixis and the primary deixis employed in the speech. This study is structured based on George Yule's hypothesis. According to Yule's theory, deixis may be categorized into three parts: person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. This study employs a pragmatic approach, using a qualitative research methodology. The data in this study is derived from Kiki Fan's speech on TEDx talks, which has a duration of 8 minutes and 39 seconds. The data was examined using video transcripts and then identifying words that had deixis terms. This study demonstrates that Kiki used 3 types of deixis, including personal deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. This research  demonstrate that the form of deixis that is commonly used is person deixis. The researcher found 39 total of the deixis in the video. There are a 27 words that indicate a person deixis, 6 words that indicate spatial deixis, and 6 words that indicate temporal deixis.

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of existentialism from Sartre's viewpoint as reflected in Ernest Hemingway's short story "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place." The study investigates existential motifs such as solitude, void, the essence of existence, and internal struggles depicted through the personas of the youthful waiter, the aged waiter, and the isolated elderly individual. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, the research aims to dissect dialogues, character behaviors, and narrative construction to reveal the existentialist elements entwined within the narrative. By scrutinizing the existential themes interwoven in the storyline and juxtaposing them with Sartre's philosophical principles, the paper offers a profound exploration of the existentialist interpretation within Hemingway's literary creation.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how McDonald’s advertisement constructs persuasive meaning and brand identity through multimodal discourse. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using multimodal discourse analysis based on the framework of Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). The data consist of selected McDonald’s advertisement materials containing both visual and linguistic elements. Data were collected through observation and documentation, then analyzed by identifying visual components such as color, typography, layout, and food imagery, as well as linguistic features including slogans and promotional texts. The analysis further examines the inters miotic relationship between visual and verbal modes to understand how they work together in creating meaning. The findings reveal that visual elements and linguistic messages are strategically integrated to attract attention, evoke positive emotions, and reinforce McDonald’s brand identity. Colors, imagery, and layout create visual appeal, while concise and persuasive language strengthens the promotional message. The study concludes that the advertisement’s effectiveness stems from the seamless interaction between different semiotic modes, producing a cohesive and emotionally engaging message. These findings demonstrate how global brands maintain market dominance through sophisticated multimodal communication strategies that resonate with the psychological needs and consumption patterns of modern consumers.

Abstract

Speaking is a fundamental component of English language learning as it enables learners to communicate effectively in both academic and real-life contexts. Nevertheless, many EFL students continue to experience difficulties in developing speaking proficiency due to limited vocabulary, lack of self-confidence, grammatical inaccuracies, and speaking anxiety. Although role-play has been widely acknowledged as an effective instructional technique for improving speaking skills, research examining its integration with narrative texts remains relatively limited. Therefore, this study aims to describe the implementation of role-play through narrative texts in teaching speaking skills and to explore students’ perceptions of its use in the classroom. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews involving eleventh-grade Hospitality students at SMKN 8 Surabaya. The findings indicate that narrative text-based role-play promoted students’ confidence, active participation, speaking fluency, and comprehension of narrative texts. Although students encountered challenges related to vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and speaking anxiety, continuous teacher guidance and feedback helped them address these difficulties. These findings suggest that integrating role-play with narrative texts is an effective pedagogical strategy for enhancing EFL students’ speaking skills while fostering greater engagement and confidence in classroom communication.
