Abstract

It has long been contentious to use Indonesian as a teaching and learning language for English classes. This research tried to investigate how the lecturer uses Indonesian in the English-language classroom. A mixed method combining quantitative and qualitative methods was used. The participants were 24 first-year students of the English Education major from STKIP PGRI Sidoarjo, class 2020A. This was a survey research. Participants were given a questionnaire with 15 questions to collect primary data. The research found that students perceived the lecturer’s use of Indonesian in the online EFL class was beneficial. Indonesian was used by lecturer to explain new vocabulary and English grammar. Related to students’ feelings, they felt more comfortable and had better understanding when the lecturer used Indonesian, especially when it was related to the material explanation. However, the advantages and disadvantages of the lecturer’s use of Indonesian in the classroom were also acknowledged by students. The findings of this research indicate that students majoring in English education still consider the use of Indonesian by lecturers having an important role in English classes.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Speaking accuracy remains a major challenge in Indonesian EFL classrooms due to limited opportunities for oral practice, teacher-centered instruction, and high levels of speaking anxiety among students. These conditions often result in low lexical control, frequent grammatical errors, and limited fluency. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Mobile Gamified Chunking Strategy (MGCS) in improving the speaking accuracy of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Sampang, East Java, Indonesia.  This study employed a Classroom Action Research design conducted in two cycles involving 30 students during the 2025/2026 academic year. MGCS integrated lexical chunking instruction, gamified learning activities using Wordwall, and mobile-assisted speaking practice through WhatsApp Voice Typing. Data were collected through speaking tests administered as a pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II, and were analyzed descriptively.  The results revealed a substantial improvement in students’ speaking accuracy. The total mean score increased from 15.5 in the pre-test to 23.6 in post-test II, representing an overall improvement of 52.3%. Improvements were observed across all components of speaking accuracy, including grammatical accuracy (59.6%), lexical accuracy (79.1%), and fluency (61.8%). Cycle I resulted in a 29.7% improvement, while Cycle II contributed an additional 17.4% improvement.  In conclusion, MGCS proved to be an effective, low-cost, and contextually relevant instructional strategy for improving EFL students’ speaking accuracy in Indonesian secondary school settings.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Indonesian vocational EFL students still have problems understanding reading materials. Students tend to base their understanding on word analysis and translation, which hinders their ability to read texts as a whole. This problem is particularly critical as students need to understand instructional and procedural texts for their work. This study aimed to apply the chunking strategy to improve students' reading comprehension in vocational EFL classes. Using the CAR method, which focuses on a group of vocational high school students, this study was conducted in a single cycle comprising four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Reading comprehension tests, classroom observations, and student reflection notes were used as data collection instruments. A significant improvement in students' reading comprehension, as evidenced by higher test scores, increased reading fluency, and changes in the reading process, which initially involved only looking at groups of words or phrases to construct meaning. Classroom observations showed an improvement in students' participation and confidence. Some students did not show their improvement, but their scores did not decline either. This condition shows that the strategy was quite effective in teaching them. The study was terminated at the end of cycle I because the teaching objectives had been achieved. This study provides practical evidence of the effectiveness and feasibility of the chunking strategy in improving reading comprehension in a vocational school setting.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how McDonald’s advertisement constructs persuasive meaning and brand identity through multimodal discourse. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using multimodal discourse analysis based on the framework of Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). The data consist of selected McDonald’s advertisement materials containing both visual and linguistic elements. Data were collected through observation and documentation, then analyzed by identifying visual components such as color, typography, layout, and food imagery, as well as linguistic features including slogans and promotional texts. The analysis further examines the inters miotic relationship between visual and verbal modes to understand how they work together in creating meaning. The findings reveal that visual elements and linguistic messages are strategically integrated to attract attention, evoke positive emotions, and reinforce McDonald’s brand identity. Colors, imagery, and layout create visual appeal, while concise and persuasive language strengthens the promotional message. The study concludes that the advertisement’s effectiveness stems from the seamless interaction between different semiotic modes, producing a cohesive and emotionally engaging message. These findings demonstrate how global brands maintain market dominance through sophisticated multimodal communication strategies that resonate with the psychological needs and consumption patterns of modern consumers.
