Abstract

The preservation of coastal ecosystems and mangrove forests is becoming increasingly urgent due to their vital role in maintaining the overall balance of ecosystems. The presence of mangrove forests can reduce the impact of coastal erosion and protect from threatening sea storms. Furthermore, mangrove ecosystems serve as habitats for various species. This community service program utilizes a participatory and educational approach to address plastic pollution on the coast of Batu Koneng Beach, Poka Village, Ambon Island, Maluku. The GEMPA Nature Lovers, students from the Geography Education Study Program at Pattimura University in Ambon, collaborated with the Indonesian Sea Guardians Community, the 733/Raider Infantry Battalion, and local communities. The program's goal is to raise awareness among the community and create a tangible impact in maintaining coastal environmental cleanliness. The chosen location has a significant plastic pollution issue, offering great potential for environmental preservation activities. The GEMPA Nature Lovers, a student organization passionate about the environment, constitute the program's primary participants. The program's main findings underscore the importance of awareness and tangible actions in addressing plastic pollution on the coast. By involving students, local communities, and various stakeholders, the program enhances understanding of the negative impacts of plastic pollution and the importance of preserving coastal ecosystems. These findings provide a strong foundation for developing sustainable policies and practices in waste management and protecting coastal ecosystems.

Abstract

This training and mentoring program aims to improve community preparedness and response to earthquakes in Indonesia. Located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia often experiences large-magnitude earthquakes that cause significant damage and loss of life. Through this program, we strive to improve community knowledge and understanding of earthquake risks and the necessary preparedness measures. The program also aims to improve community skills in responding to emergency situations, build reliable disaster preparedness systems and procedures, and strengthen cooperation between communities, government, and non-governmental organizations. The methods used include the preparation of preparedness plans, technical training, evacuation simulations, first aid training, and the application of virtual reality technology. Evaluation was carried out through pre-test and post-test surveys, participant feedback, and field assessments. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in community understanding and preparedness. Follow-up actions include the preparation of recommendations, the development of advanced programs, and the establishment of a disaster preparedness information and training center. This program is expected to create more resilient communities that are ready to face earthquakes, as well as reduce the impacts caused.

Abstract

Spatial mapping training for teachers and students in island regions was conducted to strengthen schools’ capacity to understand environmental risks through geospatial technology utilization. This activity was motivated by limited data access and low spatial literacy in coastal schools vulnerable to disasters. It aimed to enhance teachers’ and students’ skills in identifying, mapping, and analyzing potential hazards around school environments. The participatory and collaborative approach involved training sessions, field practices, and digital mentoring using open-source software. The results showed significant improvements in spatial literacy, risk analysis ability, and school autonomy in developing local risk maps. The community-based spatial training model strengthened school disaster preparedness and fostered an inter-school collaborative network. This approach provides scientific contribution to applied disaster education. Its implication encourages local governments and educational institutions to replicate similar programs sustainably.

Abstract

The training on creating raised-relief maps for Social Studies (IPS) teachers in Ambon City is an important initiative to enhance students' understanding of regional topography. With a holistic approach that involves a series of structured stages, the training aims to provide teachers with strong knowledge and skills in creating and using raised-relief maps as effective learning tools. The methodology includes identifying the initial needs of the teachers, selecting experienced instructors, preparing relevant training materials, and conducting the training through a series of structured sessions. Following the training, follow-up activities are carried out through monitoring, mentoring, and evaluating long-term impacts. The results of the training are expected to improve teachers' ability to create informative raised-relief maps and effectively utilize them in the learning process. Raised-relief maps are expected to better visualize the topographical characteristics of the region to students, enriching their learning experience. Thus, the training is anticipated to significantly enhance the quality of teaching and help students better understand the environment they live in.

Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in education offers significant potential for enhancing the quality of learning and teaching efficiency. This study aims to evaluate AI-based teaching material development training using Kelas Ajaib on the Canva application, provided to 40 teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Ambon. The methods used included a workshop approach and interactive simulations, designed to improve teachers' competence in designing technology-based teaching media. The evaluation results showed that participants' enthusiasm reached 85%, while satisfaction levels were 86%, indicating a positive response to the training. However, competence levels in developing teaching media only reached 75%, indicating the need for additional mentoring and improved technological infrastructure. The main obstacles identified included hardware limitations and adaptation to new technology. Recommendations include further training, increased technical support, and the strengthening of school infrastructure. The implications of this training highlight the importance of collaboration among educational stakeholders to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of AI technology implementation in teaching. Further research is recommended to evaluate the long-term impact of this training on teaching quality and student engagement.

Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education presents new opportunities to enhance learning quality. However, in many schools, including SMP Negeri 2 Ambon, its utilization remains limited due to a lack of digital literacy among teachers and infrastructural constraints. This community service program aims to improve teachers' understanding and skills in utilizing AI through hands-on training. The method used in this program involves interactive training, which includes theoretical sessions, practical exercises, and simulations of AI applications in teaching. Evaluation is conducted through observations, interviews, and questionnaires to measure the effectiveness of the training. A total of 15 teachers from various subject areas participated in the program. The training results indicate that 85% of participants experienced an improvement in their understanding of AI and its application in education. Teachers who attended the training began integrating AI into lesson planning, automated assessments, and personalized learning for students. However, the main challenges faced include limited technological infrastructure and the need for ongoing mentoring for teachers struggling to adopt AI. The implications of this program suggest that AI training for teachers can enhance teaching quality and learning efficiency. Therefore, further support is needed in the form of better infrastructure, supportive school policies, and continuous training programs to ensure the optimal and sustainable implementation of AI at SMP Negeri 2 Ambon and other schools.

Abstract

The “Plastic-Free Campus” program at FKIP Pattimura University was implemented to address the increasing use of single-use plastics and low ecological awareness among students. The program aimed to build an environmentally friendly campus culture through education, campaigns, and practical strategies for reducing plastic waste. The method applied was Participatory Action Research (PAR), involving participatory observation, socialization, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), training, and direct mentoring. Results showed a 32-point increase in students’ understanding between pre-test and post-test, a 23% reduction in plastic waste in the canteen, and the emergence of new habits such as bringing personal utensils and sorting waste. The program demonstrated that educational and participatory approaches effectively foster sustainable ecological behavior among students. It implies the need for institutional policy support and program replication to expand environmental initiatives in higher education.
