Abstract

Background: Malaria remains a major public health concern in eastern Indonesia, with East Nusa Tenggara Province ranking second in national malaria endemicity. In this region, East Sumba Regency is among the highest-burden districts, where school-aged children (5–14 years) account for 42.9% of reported cases and 2–3 new infections are recorded daily. Despite this high burden, limited research has examined how parental roles and environmental conditions contribute to malaria incidence in this vulnerable age group. Understanding these factors is critical for informing targeted prevention strategies.Purpose: This study aimed to examine the relationship between parental roles and environmental conditions with the incidence of malaria among school-aged children in East Sumba Regency, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted in January 2022 involving 120 school-aged children (grades 5 and 6) from an area in East Sumba Regency, selected through total sampling. Data were collected using validated, modified questionnaires measuring parental involvement and environmental conditions related to malaria risks. Descriptive statistics were used for univariate analysis, and Pearson’s Chi-square test was applied for bivariate analysis. Results: Among the respondents, 43 children (35.8%) had a history of malaria, while 77 (64.2%) had never experienced it. Poor parental roles were reported by 42.5% of participants, and 57.5% lived in substandard environmental conditions. Significant associations were found between parental roles (p=0.020) and environmental conditions (p=0.018) with the incidence of malaria. Conclusion: Parental roles and environmental conditions are significantly associated with the incidence of malaria among school-aged children in East Sumba. Strengthening parental involvement and improving environmental health can be effective strategies for reducing malaria transmission in endemic settings.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated stigma toward health workers, patients, and survivors while intensifying social inequalities through rising unemployment, poverty, and social exclusion. This systematic review examined literature from ProQuest, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and PubMed, focusing on the stigma of COVID-19 in Asia. Original research employing quantitative or qualitative methods was included for articles that published in 2020-2021, while review articles were excluded. Screening followed PRISMA guidelines, with data collection and analysis conducted from November 2021 to April 2022, resulting in 24 articles. Data extracted included titles, authors, publication years, participants, methods, findings, strengths, and limitations. Quality was assessed using JBI’s critical appraisal tools, and thematic analysis was performed using Braun and Clarke’s framework. The review identified three key themes: general characteristics of COVID-19 stigma, affected populations, and the multifaceted impacts. Stigma in Asia has led to widespread fear and discrimination against infected individuals, survivors, health workers, and vulnerable groups with significant psychological, spiritual, economic, and health repercussions. We recommend that the government raise public awareness to minimize misinformation by providing education about COVID-19 and efforts to address the impacts caused by stigma, as well as integrating anti-stigma measures into policies and expanding mental health services for those affected.

Abstract

Hypertension or high blood pressure is the result of systolic and diastolic blood pressure that is too high ≥140/90 mmHg. Hypertension is one of the causes of premature death worldwide Reducing the prevalence of hypertension by 33% in 2020-2030 is one of the global targets of non-communicable diseases. Blood pressure (BP) measurements performed by individuals and families have a high potential to improve the diagnosis and management of hypertension. The implementation of blood pressure measurements is carried out through increasing education and training for individuals and families in measuring blood pressure independently. Early detection through self-measurement of blood pressure and control of hypertension by health services is an effort to control hypertension. This study aimed was to identify the effect of blood pressure measurement training on early detection and control efforts for hypertensive patients at health service facilities. This research uses a pre-experimental research design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sampling technique used a purposive sampling method. with a total sample 24 respondents. The form of treatment is providing training to measure blood pressure using a digital blood pressure monitor. Before the training was conducted, the respondents' ability  to measure BP was measured first through a pre-test (initial observation before the intervention, after which the intervention was given (BP measurement), then a post-test (final observation) was conducted after the treatment was given, using the same measuring instrument. The result of this study, there was an effect of blood pressure measurement training on early detection and control efforts of hypertension patients in health care facilities with a p-value of 0.000. Independent blood pressure measurement training in individuals with hypertension has a positive impact on increasing knowledge and changing individual behavior in conducting early detection and control efforts of hypertension in healthcare facilities.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a disease caused by the dengue virus through the bite of the Aedes sp mosquito with Aedes aegypti as the main vector and Aedes albopictus as the secondary vector. The number of DHF sufferers in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province increased until 2020, with 4,518 people infected and 48 people died. This research aims to determine the description of community behavior regarding disease control (DHF) in East Nusa Tenggara. Method: Using literature review research with problem identification stages, data search using Google Scholar, Science Direct, ProQuest databases with the keywords "community behavior about controlling dengue hemorrhagic fever in East Nusa Tenggara". The articles reviewed were 10 articles with publication years from 2019-2020. Based on the results of the review of 10 articles analyzed, it was found that most people have good knowledge and attitudes towards controlling Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). However, these results are not fully followed by optimal preventive actions and behaviors. The mismatch between knowledge and actual practices indicates a behavioral gap that is still a major challenge in controlling DHF in the community. Socioeconomic factors, environmental habits, and the weak monitoring function of health cadres also exacerbate the situation. A sustainable community empowerment strategy is needed through community-based education, cadre mentoring, and cross-sector support to strengthen changes in DHF prevention behavior in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the major public health challenges in Indonesia and a key obstacle to achieving the 2030 TB elimination target. Transmission most frequently occurs within households, particularly among family members living with active TB patients. Poor home conditions—such as inadequate ventilation, limited natural lighting, and overcrowding—are major factors facilitating transmission. This study aims to identify effective household-level prevention strategies for pulmonary TB through a literature review of ten studies published between 2020 and 2024. A literature review design was employed using the PRISMA approach to select relevant articles from Google Scholar, with the keyword “TB transmission prevention at home.” Data were analyzed using the PICO framework to define population, intervention, comparison, and outcomes. The findings revealed five main prevention themes: improvement of household environments, education and behavioral change, contact investigation and preventive therapy (TPT), strengthening the role of health workers and community cadres, and context-specific strategies for Eastern Indonesia. The study concludes that preventing household TB transmission requires a multidimensional and community-based approach. Comprehensive preventive measures at the household level are crucial to support Indonesia’s goal of TB elimination
