Abstract

After the COVID-19 pandemic, a new condition (New Normal) affects a variety of human activities, especially the working conditions of urban women. Until now, women have been more than viewed as merely objects of domestication, worker exploitation, verbal or physical violence, and other forms of discrimination. This study aims to disclose an alternative perspective on women as subjects actively negotiating their domestic and public roles. This new condition introduces adjustments to women's work-at-home (work-from-home) and family responsibilities during the pandemic (approximately for two years). This research used a qualitative method with in-depth interviews through mapping a new condition of women who were able to negotiate and resist during the pandemic in their families. This study was conducted with working mothers in Surabaya, Sidoarjo, and Gresik. The findings of this study revealed that urban working women frequently negotiate and resist their roles, meaning that gender roles or relations are not static but are always in the process of being.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to show the opportunities and obstacles that exist in Islamic banking in the midst of the development of online loan-based fintech which is widely used by the public due to the ease of applying for loans. This is different from financing in Islamic banking in terms of submitting financing which is not as easy and fast as that offered by fintech. This research uses a qualitative method with data collection techniques through literature study. From the data collected, researchers will compare the opportunities and challenges of Islamic banking in the midst of the development of online loan-based fintech. The results of this research indicate that the opportunity for Islamic banking is to be able to increase access to finance for the unreached public through collaboration with Islamic fintech, attracting, collecting and channeling funds at a broader level, and channeling digital-based Islamic financing. The challenges are in regulating and supervising fintech companies operating within the Islamic banking system, competition with conventional fintech that do not follow sharia principles, and the lack of public education about the differences between loans in Islamic banking and fintech online loans.

Abstract

The implementation of Sharia compliance in the management of zakat, infaq, and sadaqah (ZIS) funds is essential to ensure public trust and institutional accountability. This study aims to examine the extent to which BSI Maslahat, the official amil zakat institution affiliated with Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI), complies with Sharia principles in distributing ZIS funds, particularly in terms of transparency and accountability. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature and documentary study approach. The data were sourced from BSI Maslahat’s annual reports from 2017 to 2023 and relevant fatwas issued by the National Sharia Council–Indonesian Ulema Council (DSN-MUI). Content analysis was applied to assess the alignment of ZIS distribution with Sharia principles, particularly DSN-MUI Fatwa No. 23/2020 and No. 71/2023. The findings indicate that ZIS distribution during the observed period did not fully comply with Fatwa No. 23/2020, as the riqab category was not included. However, improvements in transparency and reporting were evident in accordance with Fatwa No. 71/2023. These results are analyzed through Monzer Kahf’s Islamic Contract Theory, which emphasizes justice, transparency, and Sharia adherence. This study contributes to Islamic economic discourse by offering strategic recommendations to enhance ZIS fund management and compliance. It also serves as a reference for regulators and Islamic financial practitioners to improve institutional governance and public confidence in Islamic philanthropy. Keywords: BSI Maslahat; Sharia Compliance; ZIS Distribution; DSN-MUI; Islamic Contract Theory

Abstract

This study aims to explore the perceptions of generation Z, especially students, towards the operational risks of mobile banking at Islamic banks. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach, where data is collected through interviews with nine informants selected through purposive sampling techniques, namely Islamic Banking students of UMSurabaya who actively use mobile banking services at Islamic banks. Data validity is obtained through triangulation, and data analysis is carried out by data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that the majority of informants assess this service positively because it is in accordance with Islamic principles, although there are concerns regarding technical risks and data security. This shows that the success of mobile banking services depends on the balance between Islamic principles and the quality of a system that is safe for users.
