Abstract

Free Fatty Acids (FFA), which include unsaturated fatty acids like oleic and linoleic acid and saturated fatty acids like palmitic and stearic, are present in most oil compositions. The various negative impacts of FFA require these compounds to be eliminated.  This research aims to separate FFA using Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE) and determine the levels of FFA using acid-alkalimetric titration in corn oil and palm oil. FFA extraction was carried out for 4 minutes with a solvent ratio of 9,5 ml diethyl ether + 40 ml ethanol + 0,5 ml water. By adding 1M Na2SO4, re-extraction was carried out for 3 minutes. The results obtained were 0.95% FFA levels in corn oil and 1.26% FFA levels in palm oil. FFA levels of both oils are still below the SNI FFA percentage of 3%; besides that, it is found that the FFA levels in palm oil are higher than in corn oil

Abstract

Chemistry is a science that studies the composition, structure, and properties or changes of matter. In chemistry, there are three levels of representation namely macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic. Chemistry is a branch of science that requires students to have an understanding of concepts and mathematical skills, one of which is colligative properties. The aim of this research is to analyze the concept of colligative properties so that students don’t have misconceptions and can enhance their understanding through a multi-representation approach. The method used is the scientific approach, based on a series of five main learning experiences: Observing, Questioning, Reasoning, Associating and Communicating. Information collection techniques include concept maps, concept analysis, and propositions. Colligative properties consist of vapor pressure lowering, boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, and osmotic pressure. The van't Hoff factor is present in most colligative properties where the solute is an electrolyte substance.

Abstract

One way to preserve culture in education is through ethnoscience-based learning, especially in chemical materials linked to various fields of science in life, including social and cultural. Ethnoscience is a process of reconstructing indigenous science knowledge with scientific science. This research aims to explore trends in ethnoscience-based chemistry learning in Indonesia and analyze the contents, focusing on topics, learning approaches and models, tools, and variables influenced. The research data collection method adopted the preferred items for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) design and obtained from 30 selected articles indicated from 2019-2024 published in journals indexed by Scopus and SINTA. Analysis results show that the process of making batik is one of the ethnoscience topics that are widely used in chemistry learning. Ethnoscience learning can also be done by combining local wisdom (culture), traditional foods, and natural phenomena of the environment. Ethnoscience learning can be integrated into various learning models, such as contextual teaching and learning (CTL), problem-based, and project-based learning (PjBL). Learning tools often used in ethnoscience-based chemistry learning are modules, evaluation instruments, and worksheets. Ethnoscience is interesting to learn because it positively affects critical thinking and creativity, cultural and conservation character, and scientific literacy.

Abstract

Students often consider chemistry as a difficult subject to understand because that most teachers still use conventional teaching methods and lack of application of innovative learning media. Along with the times, a student-centered learning approach is one of the potential innovations that can be applied in learning chemistry, such as project- and game-based learning. This community service aims to enhance teachers' understanding and skills in implementing project-based learning and games in chemistry learning. The methods of this service are lectures and training. The subjects were 89 chemistry teachers from 40 high schools who are members of the Chemistry MGMP in Sidoarjo. The activities were carried out in the form of: (1) Socialization and sharing sessions on PjBL; (2) Socialization and sharing sessions on GBL; (3) Integration of project- and game-based learning in chemistry learning; (4) Demonstration of project- and game-based learning in chemistry learning; and (5) Sharing session on project-based teaching modules and games in chemistry learning. After participating in the activity, teachers' understanding increased by 35.37%. This activity produces outputs in the form of best practices and teaching modules.
