Abstract

Beauty is a quality greatly appreciated for its ability to soothe the heart and delight the eye. In art, beauty manifests through the cultural and spiritual expression of humanity. Visual arts, such as painting and photography, serve not only as adornments but also as mediums for conveying messages and emotions, linking personal expression with collective experiences. However, a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW suggests that Islam does not sanction painting, stating that those who engage in it will face severe punishment in the afterlife. This necessitates a detailed and nuanced interpretative study of the hadith. This research adopts a thematic approach to analyse the hadith by reviewing its texts and related literature. Contextualisation is achieved by examining the historical context of the hadith and applying a hermeneutic method from Fazlur Rahman’s perspective, specifically through the concept of double movement. This method aims to clarify the context and purpose behind the prohibition of painting. The study explores how the hadith’s interpretation can be adjusted to fit modern social contexts and address potential misconceptions in contemporary art practices. The findings indicate that the prohibition is primarily aimed at preventing idolatry and worship. By using Fazlur Rahman’s perspective, it becomes evident that, within a modern context, painting does not necessarily involve worship and can be accepted as a form of creative expression. This highlights the need to adapt Islamic legal interpretations to social changes while maintaining core religious principles, thereby reducing misunderstandings in the development of contemporary art.

Abstract

This article aims to understand more deeply how surah Al-Fātiḥaḥ is perceived and functioned practically by people with hearing and speech sensory disabilities (PDSRW) at the Qur'an House of the Deaf Friends Asy-Syukur Kediri. In the Islamic tradition, surah Al-Fātiḥaḥ is believed to have great spiritual power, so it is not surprising that this surah is perceived and used in various ways by various groups. The functional reception of the Qur'an is then used to analyze the purpose of reciting surah Al-Fātiḥaḥ at RQST Asy-Syukur. This study is a field research using a qualitative approach. Data collection was done through observation, interview, and documentation. The results obtained show that the practice of reciting al-Fātiḥaḥ at RQST Asy-Syukur Kediri is carried out regularly before and after learning. The recitation of surah al-Fātiḥaḥ in this practice is used as a source of help and guidance so that students can understand and appreciate the learning process, especially in the study of the meaning of the Qur'an. Given that each santri has a different intensity of hearing and intellectual ability, this also affects their speed in capturing information. So the recitation of surah al-Fātiḥaḥ is intended to make it easier for students to understand the material presented. On the other hand, Maskurun, the caregiver of the Qur'an House, perceives surah al-Fātiḥaḥ to make it easier for him to deliver the material. In addition, surah al-Fātiḥaḥ is used as a daily practice of the santri and functions as a wirid or prayer. This research is expected to add to the richness of the living Qur'an treasure in a new dimension, namely how the Qur'anic text lives and is practiced among people with disabilities, a topic that is relatively rarely raised in Islamic studies.

Abstract

This paper reveals descriptively the textual basis of Muhammad Abdullah Darraz’s thoughts as stated in his work Dustūr al-Akhlāq fī al-Qur’ān: Dirāsah Muqāranah li al-Akhlāq al-Nażāriyyāt fī al-Qur’ān. It aims to confirm the extent of the text analysis model used by Darraz in formulating the concept of Islamic morality. The researcher used a qualitative research type and a content analysis approach by tracing the interpretation of the verses of the Koran and the background to the criticism built by Darraz. This research makes Dustūr al-Akhlāq fī al-Qur’ān a material object and the critic of morality as a formal object. The fīndings are as follows: Fīrst, in his thought project, Darraz uses Qur’anic epistemology by indirectly using al-Ghazali’s maqāṣīd al-Qur’ān method. So, with this method, he succeeded in finding forms of commands in various pronunciations of the Qur’an to confīrm the Shari'ah of overall morality. Second, Darraz proved that Islamic morality differs from Western morality based on empiricism and is not value-free. This is preceded by constructive criticism of the existing Islamic treasures and their further development. On the other hand, it applies destructive criticism to Western views on morality. In short, Darraz's thought project is an anti-thesis effort to the conventional concept of morality that has developed by offering an original reference to understanding the Koran.

Abstract

The hadith narrative that women are created from ribs is often used to legitimize social constructions that place women subordinately in gender relations. In the context of the digital era, this narrative not only develops in oral tradition and printed texts but is also reproduced and contested through new media. This article aims to analyze the patterns of understanding and discourse that develop in three online Islamic websites in Indonesia -almanhaj.or.id, nu.or.id, and mubadalah.id- towards the hadith of the creation of women from a rib. This research uses a qualitative approach based on discourse analysis and integrating hadith, gender, and media studies. The results show that each site constructs the meaning of the hadith following the religious ideology adopted: almanhaj.or.id represents a textual-conservative approach with the reinforcement of women's domestic role and inferiority; nu.or.id combines a moderate literal and contextual approach; while mubadalah.id carries a progressive interpretation with a mubadalah perspective that emphasizes equality in gender relations. All three show how digital media has become essential in contesting the meaning of religious texts and forming public opinion. This study concludes that the interpretation of hadith in online media is neither theologically nor ideologically neutral but rather determines the dominant narrative that develops about women in Islam. The findings contribute to developing contemporary hadith studies, especially in digital media and gender discourse.

Abstract

Subul al-Salām by al-Ṣanʿānī represents a critique of sectarian fanaticism within Islamic jurisprudence, articulated through his commentary on hadith. This critique is closely linked to al-Ṣanʿānī’s concern over the decline of the Muslim ummah in the Arab region during the 11th–12th centuries AH, which in turn spurred the discourse of Islamic intellectual reform as a response. Through a historical inquiry, this study aims to explore the relationship between his commentary on Bulūgh al-Marām and the socio-cultural dynamics experienced by al-Ṣanʿānī. This research is based on library sources and employs a qualitative method. It addresses three key questions: a) In what ways can the tendency to disengage from rigid adherence to a particular school of law be identified as a defining characteristic of al-Ṣanʿānī’s hadith commentary in Subul al-Salām? b) What historical factors contributed to the emergence of this characteristic? c) How do these factors correlate with the transformation toward a new model of understanding hadith commentary? The findings of this study reveal that al-Ṣanʿānī employed a critical and corrective approach to interpreting hadith, often engaging with and reassessing views from various legal schools. There is a close connection between the paradigm of Ibn Taymiyyah, which had developed as a discourse of tajdīd in the Arab-Islamic world at the time, and al-Ṣanʿānī’s dissatisfaction with sectarian conflicts, particularly in his homeland, Yemen. Ultimately, Subul al-Salām is also associated with his decision to renounce the Zaydī madhhab and adopt a non-aligned stance, free from commitment to any single madhhab.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the meaning of marriage during the ninth night of Ramadhan, especially in Tuban Regency. This tradition is highly esteemed among the people of Tuban and has been passed down through generations. "Nikah malem songo" is one of the traditions of Javanese Muslim communities in the Tuban region, and it is carried out on the 29th night of Ramadhan. This night is considered auspicious for conducting marriages, and as a result, dozens or even hundreds of prospective brides and grooms gather to solemnize their weddings in a single night. This research has two main focuses: firstly, to understand the significance of the practice of "nikah malem songo" among the Muslim community in Tuban Regency, and secondly, to examine the transmission of hadiths that contribute to the construction of this practice. This study is conducted as a field research and employs a qualitative approach. Data is collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Subsequently, data analysis is carried out in a descriptive-analytical manner. The research findings indicate that "nikah malem songo" serves as a critique by the community against Javanese calculations and negative perceptions of the month of Ramadhan. The community believes that getting married on the ninth night of Ramadan brings blessings, and this belief is based on the fact that these marriages are specifically held at the end of Ramadan, during the night of  lailatul qadar, which is considered the most blessed night. The preservation of the "nikah malem songo" tradition within the community is closely tied to the hadith texts that underpin it, such as the hadith about the marriage of the Prophet and Khadijah in the month of Syawal, the hadith emphasizing the virtues of Ramadhan, and the hadith regarding the excellence of lailatul qadar.

Abstract

Happiness has become the main need for humans in living life. Every individual human being is willing to do various kinds of ways to achieve happiness. In the modern digital era, the perspective on happiness is transformed into a more complex one. Based on the problems that exist in the community, the writer is interested in conducting research related to happiness in the perspective of the hadith contained in the S{ah{i>h{ Bukha>ri Book. The author conducts conceptual thematic research by collecting hadiths that hint at the theme of happiness. This research includes a literature review which is analyzed descriptively-analytical using a psycho-sufistic approach. The result of this research is that there are hadiths which indicate that happiness is obtained in the Book of S{ah{i>h{ Bukha>ri no. 1274, 5933 and 5965. And from these three hadiths the author concludes that the problem of happiness in the digital era is a mere form of negligence in understanding worldly issues. This ultimately affects a person's mental health. Then from these various problems the author concludes that by increasing spirituality and also gratitude for the blessings that Allah SWT. giving to His servant is a means to true (essential) happiness.

Abstract

The use of hermeneutic as one of approaches in hadith study becomes one of knowledge integration forms which is implemented in the contemporary era. The knowledge integration between hadith and hermeneutic can be found such as from a study conducted by Fatima Mernissi. The Mernissi’s concept toward the issue of gender equality has brought her to study hadith that as if support the views lowering women (misogyny). Based on that argument, this article tries to explore more descriptivelyanalytic about the form of hermeneutic hadith of Fatima Mernissi in her effort in understanding misogyny hadith. The research problems are how is Fatima Mernissi’s thought related to the Prophet’s hadith from the rising and process of its collecting?, how is Mernissi’ hermeneutic hadith form that is showed through double investigation methods? How is the description of the method application in Abu Bakrah’s riwayah about women leadership?. This study is a literature study, and its discussion is more descriptive-analytic. Based on her, method in hadith knowledge that has been shown by the classic scholars (ulama) should be completed by the development of contemporary knowledge that puts scientific aspect as the more important aspect than normative aspect.

Abstract

‘Aisyah wa one of the wives of the Prophet Pbuh. who atrracted much attention. Among the Sunni, he received much praises –for one thing- because of the breadth and depth of his knowledge, as well as the narration and mastery of his hadith which were considered to be prominent among of the other wives of the Prophet Pbuh. On the contrary, there was a group of people from Shia who instead denounced and cursed ‘Aisha. Starting from this, the author was interested to explore one of the hadith books that tells how the figure of ‘Aisha based on the narration of hadiths compiled by a Shia scholar , Murtad{a al-‘Askari. The writing of al-‘Askari can be counterweight to the “bad image” that has been given by the Shia to ‘Aisha. One interesting view was also conveyed by al-‘Askari is that the history of Islam ( from sending of the Prophet Pbuh. to the pledge of Yazid bin Mu’awiyah) can only be truly understood after examining the hadith narration of ummul mu’mini>n, ‘Aisha. This research is a literatur review. The discussion of which uses descriptive-analytical method. This paper generally tries to introduce the hadith book titled Dira>sa>t fi> al-Hadi>th wa al-Tari>kh : Aha>dith Ummul Mu’mini>n ‘Aisha by looking at some general aspects of the composition of the book, including writing background, content, systematic, method, examples of discussion, and also describes the advantages and disadvantages analyzed from several section of the book. Based on the results of the discussion, the author considers that al-‘Askari tried to put a description of the figure ‘Aisha objectively based on the historical hadiths that originated from ‘Aisha and also the the other companins (sahabah) about ‘Aisha and the event surrounding herself. In discussing the death of the Prophet Pbuh., al-‘Askari included a variety of narration that seems contradictory about the Prophet’s death moments,”whether in the lap of ‘Aisha or ‘Ali?!”. Based on the tarji>h method, al-‘Askari more favored the narration of hadith which said that the Prophet Pbuh had died in the lap of ‘Ali because more were narrated ( four companions /sahabah). Interestingly, the source of the narration referred to by al-‘Askari is almost entirely derived from a number of well-known Sunni scholars. This was done to show how scientific research must be carried out without looking at affiliations of certain religious sects.

Abstract

In the digital era, discussions on the prohibition of tabarruj for women frequently appear in digital content, responding to women’s active presence in both real and virtual public spheres, and are variously addressed on social media. This article examines the contestation of the tabarruj prohibition in social media, especially on Instagram, based on the presentation of content, meaning, and acceptance among Indonesian Muslims. The research is included in media text studies about living Qur’an-Hadith on social media. The virtual ethnography method is used to collect data in digital space, especially on the Instagram platform for five accounts: @khalidbasalamahofficial, @humairahijab, @fikihmuslimah, @akhiukhtiantiselfie, and @mubadalah.id. Based on social media searches, the prohibition of tabarruj in these accounts is mostly based on QS. Al-Ahzab [33]: 33, the Prophet's hadith, and the views of Islamic scholars. Four of the contents present the prohibition of tabarruj specifically for women, and one content, @mubadalah.id, offers a new reading that tabarruj can be intended for both women and men. Readers more widely reach based on the influence of the content, @khalidbasamahofficial and @ukhriakhiantiselfie accounts, and @mubadalah.id accounts have fewer responses. Instagram, in this case, has become a medium for constructing religious discourse, both among followers of Salafism and supporters of the gender equality and justice movement in Indonesia. The significance of this research shows how the prohibition of tabarruj is understood, accepted, implemented, and even debated in the context of social media in Indonesia and has implications for contemporary religious understanding and practice.
