Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of power in the presidential debate between Joe Biden (JB) and Donald Trump (DT) held at Case Western Reserve University, employing a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The aim of this research is to identify how language is used to construct and maintain power, as well as how each candidate’s rhetorical strategies influence public discourse and reflect their political ideologies. The method involves thematic analysis of the debate transcript to explore language use, interruptions, and discursive patterns. The findings reveal that Trump employed aggressive strategies and direct attacks to dominate discussion, whereas Biden used inclusive and empathetic language to construct a positive public image. The study also reveals that the debate functioned as a platform for reinforcing each candidate’s political ideology). This research offers insight into how language in political debates can influence public opinion and the dynamic of power. Abstrak Penelitian ini mengkaji dinamika kekuasaan dalam debat presiden antara Joe Biden dan Donald Trump yang berlangsung di Case Western Reserve University dengan menggunakan pendekatan Analisis Wacana Kritis (AWK). Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi penggunaan bahasa untuk membangun dan mempertahankan kekuasaan, serta bagaimana strategi retorika masing-masing kandidat mempengaruhi wacana publik dan mencerminkan ideologi politik mereka. Metode yang digunakan melibatkan analisis tematik terhadap transkrip debat untuk mengeksplorasi penggunaan bahasa, interupsi, dan pola diskursif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Trump menggunakan strategi agresif dan serangan langsung untuk mendominasi diskusi, sementara Biden menerapkan bahasa inklusif dan empatik untuk membangun citra positif. Temuan ini juga mengungkapkan bahwa debat berfungsi sebagai platform untuk memperkuat ideologi politik masing-masing kandidat. Penelitian ini memberikan wawasan tentang bagaimana bahasa dalam debat politik dapat mempengaruhi opini publik dan dinamika kekuasaan.

Abstract

This research is underpinned by the challenges that seventh-grade students at SMP PGRI 4 Cimahi faced in descriptive text writing skills. These were identified as deriving from the conventional learning approaches embraced by educators and the lack of innovation in utilizing instructional media. Therefore, the present research explores the viability of the PBL model, supported by media using Canva, for the enhancement of descriptive text writing skillsThe current study utilized a mixed-methods strategy, focusing on the Sequential Exploratory design.The research subjects involved 35 seventh-grade students.The data were generated through the administration of a pretest and a posttest to measure the ability to write a descriptive textThe findings reflect the improvement in the students' creative writing skills. This improvement was showcased by the increase in the mean test score from 70 in the pretest to 83.42 in the posttest. The T-test achieved a significance level of 0.000 (< 0.05). This highlights that the Alternative Hypothesis is accepted. Furthermore, N-Gain was found to be 0.56, indicating "quite effective"Based on these empirical data, this study concludes that the application of the Problem-Based Learning model supported by Canva media has proven itself effective in supporting learning and improving the descriptive writing skills of seventh-grade students.

Abstract

TRAINING AND MOTIVATION OF SMAN 1 PANGALENGAN STUDENTS IN IMPROVING ACADEMIC CAREERS: ADVANCED HIGHER EDUCATION STUDIES. Training and academic motivation are crucial efforts to encourage high school students, particularly in remote areas such as Pangalengan, to pursue higher education. This study aims to raise awareness and motivation among students of SMAN 1 Pangalengan regarding the importance of continuing their studies to the university level. Through a participatory method with a qualitative descriptive approach, the program involved training and the dissemination of information about academic career pathways, including details on university entrance exams and scholarship opportunities. The results of the training indicated a significant improvement in the students' understanding and motivation. Before the training, 65% of students had limited knowledge about university admission pathways, but after the training, 85% of students reported an increased understanding. Additionally, the students' motivation to pursue higher education rose from 45% before the training to 78.6% afterward. These findings also demonstrate that the training successfully enhanced students' confidence in planning their academic careers. This program is expected to serve as an initial step in increasing student participation in higher education and assisting them in making appropriate academic career choices.
