Abstract

This article delves into the profound meanings of religious practices and traditional beliefs within the context of the coastal community of Waymuli Village amidst the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Focusing on the Ruwat Laut ritual, this study analyzes how the interaction between traditional beliefs and the official religion, Islam, influences religious practices and the attitudes of the community in confronting global challenges. Through in-depth interviews with customary leaders, village heads, religious educators, farmers, and fishermen, the article reveals shifts in religious practices and the pandemic's impact on ritual implementation. The analysis results demonstrate transformations in traditional belief practices and community adaptations to changing circumstances, including social restrictions and ritual limitations. This article also discusses the factors influencing religious attitudes and practices during a crisis situation. The article's conclusion underscores the importance of gaining a deeper understanding of how communities uphold their beliefs and religious practices when facing modern challenges, while maintaining a balance between tradition and adaptation. This research contributes valuable insights to the study of religious diversity and community adaptation in the face of global crises.

Abstract

In the ever-changing global context, understanding peace has become a primary focus across various disciplines, including sociology. The sociological paradigm offers a rich and relevant perspective in understanding the dynamics of conflict, reconciliation, and post-conflict development. However, there is still a need for deeper exploration of the concept of peace within the sociological context. This research aims to investigate the evolution of the concept of peace from a sociological perspective, ranging from classical to contemporary thoughts, and to explore the implications of the sociological paradigm in peace practices and policies. This study utilizes a literature review approach to gather and analyze prominent works in sociology relevant to the concept of peace. The analysis is conducted on the views of leading sociological thinkers and relevant research findings. The findings from this literature review indicate that the sociological paradigm provides profound insights into the evolution of the concept of peace, from classical thinkers such as Durkheim, Weber, and Marx, to contemporary approaches such as critical theory and feminism. The practical implications of the sociological paradigm in conflict resolution, reconciliation, and post-conflict development are also explored. This research underscores the importance of the sociological paradigm in understanding and resolving conflicts and post-conflict development. By considering the complexity of social, political, and cultural dynamics and applying a holistic and contextual approach in designing peace strategies, sociology can make a valuable contribution to promoting sustainable and inclusive peace.

Abstract

This ethnographic study delves into the Mbelu’ Pandang tradition, a unique cultural practice held in Labuan Kertasari Village, West Sumbawa, Indonesia. This tradition, which originated from the Selayar tribe, involves intricate rituals such as the rolling of pandan leaves and the slicing of pandanus, performed during the commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. The study aimed to explore the historical roots, philosophical meanings, and contemporary significance of the Mbelu’ Pandang tradition, emphasizing its socio-cultural and religious values. Data was collected over three months using participant observation, in-depth interviews with 13 key informants, including village elders, religious, and community leaders, and qualitative content analysis was employed to interpret the findings. Results indicate that the tradition serves multiple functions: fostering community cohesion, acting as a conduit for religious expression, and reinforcing cultural identity among the villagers. It also highlights the efforts to preserve this tradition through local festivals and community-based initiatives, which sustain cultural heritage and promote regional tourism. The study contributes to understanding the dynamics of cultural preservation within minority tribes and offers insights into the complex interplay between tradition, religion, and modernity in rural Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the motivations and reasons behind victims' decisions to speak out on Instagram and evaluate the impact and responses to the speak-up movement against sexual violence. The research employs a qualitative method with data collection techniques including online observation, specifically through the social media platform Instagram, focusing on sexual violence survivors who courageously share their cases on this platform. The findings indicate that the speak-up movement on social media plays a crucial role in empowering victims, raising public awareness, and accelerating the enactment of the Sexual Violence Crime Law (UU TPKS). However, the study also identifies shortcomings in the responsiveness of authorities to the disclosed cases. The contribution of this research lies in providing new insights into Instagram's role in legal and social advocacy, as well as in the online observation methodology used to assess the impact of the speak-up movement and the direct experiences of survivors.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze a community-based waste management model through the zero-waste program at Salman Mosque ITB as an effort to address social and ecological issues caused by waste generation. The zero-waste approach is crucial because the growing population is not accompanied by adequate awareness and mindset in managing waste, resulting in the overcapacity of Final Disposal Sites (TPA). This research employs a qualitative method using field studies and literature reviews. The data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies from books, scientific articles, and relevant online sources. The findings reveal that the Salman Environment Rangers (Savior) community, empowered at Salman Mosque ITB, plays a central role in educating the public about waste sorting and management, as well as implementing a waste donation program to reduce the burden on TPA. The implications of this study demonstrate that a community-based approach through the zero-waste program can foster responsible consumption and production patterns and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The originality of this research lies in its direct observation of community-based waste management practices in a mosque setting, which remains underexplored in the context of zero waste in Indonesia.

Abstract

Based on the psychographic theory of Glock and Stark, this study tries to provide more information about the terrorist's religiosity in the context of a suicide bombing in East Java, Indonesia. To understand the theological state of terrorists who commit suicide bombings in the name of jihad, this research takes a psychological approach. Through later suicide bombings, which frequently occur, this research uses qualitative techniques to paint a picture of the dimensions of religiosity that terrorists possess. The Surabaya suicide bombings in East Java are used as a case study in this paper. The researcher uses psychographic theories of religion, which encompass ideological, ritualistic, intellectualistic, experiential, and consequential elements, to evaluate the religious dimensions of terrorists. This study demonstrates that a terrorist's religiosity can be characterised as having only conceptual, ceremonial, and intellectualistic aspects; the experiential and consequential aspects are not evident in the terrorist's attitude or personality.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the role of religion in peacebuilding in Southeast Asia, a region marked by significant religious and cultural diversity as well as recurring ethno-religious conflicts. While religion is often associated with violence, this research highlights its constructive potential by mapping how religious actors, institutions, and values contribute to reconciliation and social cohesion. Employing a qualitative Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, this study analyzed 35 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2014 and 2024, selected from databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar. The articles were screened using inclusion and exclusion criteria focusing on empirical research dealing explicitly with religion and peace within Southeast Asia. The analysis identified five thematic areas: the role of religious actors, strategies of interfaith dialogue and mediation, integration of local wisdom, institutional and political challenges, and the contribution of religious education. The findings reveal that religious figures—across Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity—have been central in peacebuilding initiatives, particularly when supported by grassroots legitimacy and cultural contextualization. Dialogical approaches, cultural sensitivity, and educational programs emerged as effective mechanisms for fostering tolerance and reconciliation. However, structural challenges, such as state bureaucracy, ideological resistance, and illiberal policies, continue to hinder the full participation of religious actors in formal peace processes. The study underscores the importance of multi-level collaboration and the recognition of religious institutions not merely as symbolic agents, but as strategic partners in sustainable peacebuilding. Its originality lies in its comprehensive synthesis of literature that bridges fragmented local case studies into a regional framework, offering new insights for both academic discourse and policy development on religion and peace in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyse how Akmal Sjafril constructs religious authority through narrative framing, linguistic strategies, and value integration in his social media engagement. Methodology: This research employed a qualitative approach using virtual ethnography (netnography) to examine Akmal Sjafril’s digital narratives on Twitter. Data were collected through virtual observation, documentation of tweets, and semi-structured interviews, and were analysed using an interactive model of qualitative analysis. Findings: The study reveals that Akmal Sjafril systematically builds religious authority by constructing narratives that defend Islamic teachings against liberal and secular reinterpretations, using adaptive linguistic styles to engage a diverse digital audience, and embedding core Islamic values—such as interfaith tolerance, noble character, and critical thinking rooted in faith—into his digital communication. His approach demonstrates how religious figures can sustain both credibility and audience engagement in a fragmented digital public sphere, blending theological consistency with communicative adaptability. Research Implications: These findings contribute to the broader understanding of religious authority in the digital era by showing how figures can negotiate credibility through adaptive digital strategies without compromising doctrinal authenticity. The research suggests the need for digital literacy initiatives, ethical guidelines for religious communication, and institutional support for promoting comprehensive religious narratives in online spaces. Originality/Value: This study provides a unique contribution by integrating narrative construction, linguistic adaptation, and value-based communication into the analysis of digital religious authority, offering new insights into how Islamic figures navigate legitimacy within the networked dynamics of social media environments.

Abstract

This article examines a customary society’s approach to environmental conservation, particularly the indigenous group in Cikondang village, Bandung Regency. This article employs a case study approach to understand their local wisdom toward nature. In addition, this study adopts a perennial philosophy perspective, which considers nature and humanity as integral parts of a divine macro and micro cosmos, necessitating mutual protection and harmony. The study reveals that the Cikondang people adhere to the philosophy of mipit kudu amit, ngala kudu bebeja (picking requires permission, taking must be declared), which underscores not only a prohibition against theft but also an ethical commitment to environmental sustainability. This principle is manifested in the strict protection of sacred areas such as huluwotan (spring sources) and prohibited forests, which are safeguarded against exploitation. The study shows the significance of indigenous beliefs and practices in promoting ecological balance, providing crucial insights for contemporary environmental management.
