Abstract

In this study, the synthesis of FeBTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) also known as MIL-100 (Fe) metal organic framework (MOF) has been carried out successfully using green mechanochemical method (neat grinding and liquid assisted grinding). The effect of solvent used in the synthesis was investigated for the first time to elucidate the physicochemical properties of FeBTC including crystal structure, thermal stability, pore size and specific surface area. The physicochemical properties of all FeBTC obtained in this study were compared to commercial FeBTC (Basolite F-300), characterized using powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and nitrogen physisorption isotherms. All Fe-BTC MOF synthesized in this study showed improved textural properties compared to commercial Basolite F-300 such as higher crystallinity, higher surface area and larger pore size. It was found that the best synthesis method was by using the mixture of ethanol and water with equal volume ratio as solvent. The highest BET surface area of FeBTC synthesized using this method was 972 m2/g for FeBTC-EtOH/H2O. This value is 2.3 times higher than the surface area of commercial Basolite F-300 (418 m2/g). FeBTC with higher surface area is expected to have higher catalytic activity which makes this FeBTC an excellent candidate as a heterogenous catalyst for many reactions such as aldol condensation or esterification reaction. Abstract

Bisphenol A (BPA) is recognized as an endocrine disruptor, capable of interfering with the normal functioning of hormones within the body by mimicking the effects of estrogen. Drinking water is one of the most common pathways of exposure to BPA as it can permeate plastic products and other materials, entering water sources. This article presents a comprehensive overview of BPA, including its incidence, origins, environmental fate, its impact on human health, and the role of fungi in the biodegradation of BPA. Fungi are natural decomposers, capable of breaking down organic compounds, including BPA, under suitable conditions. Studies have demonstrated that specific species of fungi can effectively biodegrade BPA. Some fungi utilize ligninolytic enzymes, such as laccases and peroxidases, to break down the phenolic rings of BPA. Other fungi employ non-ligninolytic enzymes, such as esterases and hydrolases, to cleave the ester linkages in BPA. Furthermore, some fungi can break down BPA via cometabolic pathways, whereby the chemical is degraded as a side reaction to the degradation of another substrate. The use of immobilized enzymes for BPA degradation has also demonstrated potential. Immobilized enzymes are those that are attached to a solid support, such as a polymer or matrix, allowing them to be used multiple times and enhance their stability and catalytic activity

Abstract

Ethylene glycol, a crucial compound extensively utilized in solvents, coolants, antifreeze, polyester fiber production, and as a natural gas-drying agent, can be synthesized via the hydrogenation of ethylene carbonate. In this study, the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic performance of Cu-Ni/SiO2 catalysts for this reaction, utilizing silica (SiO2) derived from rice husk ash, were investigated. Silica was impregnated with copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) by varying the weight ratio (Cu:Ni = 10, 7:3, 3:7, 10) to prepare bimetallic catalysts. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the presence of both Cu and Ni phases in all the catalysts. The 3Cu7Ni/SiO2 catalyst displayed the lowest reduction temperature and the largest surface area (257.97 m²/g). The 7Cu3Ni/SiO2 catalyst exhibited the highest acidity (1.91 mmol/g) and superior metal dispersion, as confirmed by the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive X-Ray (FE-SEM-EDX) analysis. Catalytic activity was evaluated in a batch reactor under 40 bar H2 pressure at 150 °C for 3 h with a catalyst-to-ethylene carbonate ratio of 5:1. Among the catalysts examined, the 7Cu-3Ni/SiO2 composition demonstrated the highest catalytic performance, achieving 15.14% conversion of ethylene carbonate and 80.51% selectivity towards ethylene glycol. Abstract

ABSTRACT. Due to their phytochemical constituents, Dewa leaves (Gynura japonica (Thunb.) Juel.) are often used in traditional medicinal herbs. However, in vitro and in vivo of antioxidative and anti-aging studies of Dewa leaves on yeast as a eukaryotic cell model have not been widely carried out. This study aims to determine the antioxidant, anti-aging, and antibacterial activities derived from G. japonica leaves extract. Extraction was conducted using 70% and 96% ethanol solvents, total phenolic content (TPC) was assayed using Folin-Ciocalteu method, flavonoid contents (TFC) was assayed using aluminum chloride method, antioxidant activity was tested using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2-azinobis-3-Ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulfonic acid) radicals. Subsequently, an anti-aging activity test was performed on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model organism following antibacterial activity. The antibacterial activity test was carried out using well diffusion agar, and the Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined using the microplate method. We obtained that G. japonica leaves extracted from 70% and 96% methanol solvents, have TPC of 13.14 and 22.11 mg GAE/gr extract, and TFC of 8.04 and 14.09 mg QE/gr extract, respectively. As for DPPH and ABTS antioxidant activity, D70 showed the best activity with IC50 values of 1411.36±56.35 µg/mL and 2516.10±18.77 µg/mL, respectively. The anti-aging test showed that both 70% and 96% ethanol extracts were able to maintain the yeast cell viability under H2O2 oxidative stress. Further, 70% and 96% ethanol extract also showed antibacterial activity at the best value against Staphylococcus aureus with a MIC value of 390.62 µg/mL, it means that Gynura leaves extract has a potency as antibacterial agent. The results of this study indicate that the ethanol extract of G. japonica leaves can be developed for further investigation as an antioxidant and antibacterial therapeutic agent.
