Abstract

Malaria is a prevalent disease that continues to affect infants and results in the death of over 435,000 individuals worldwide, with children under the age of five accounting for 11-30% of these fatalities. Malnutrition afflicts millions of children worldwide, especially in Indonesia, and is the leading cause of mortality among toddlers. Investigate the correlation between malnutrition and the occurrence of malaria in children under the age of five. Additionally, explore the prevalence, factors that contribute to the risk, and underlying processes of both malaria and malnutrition.  This study utilized 15 internationally recognized scholarly articles to investigate the correlation between malnutrition and the prevalence of malaria in children below the age of five. According to the analysis of 10 scholarly studies, the occurrence of malaria and malnutrition among children under the age of five remains significantly elevated, particularly in African nations, various countries in South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central America, and South America. The analysis of 3 journal papers examined the risk factors associated with malaria and malnutrition, specifically focusing on age, environment, sanitation, economy, education, food availability, and residing in refugee camps. After reviewing 9 journal publications, it has been shown that malnutrition is a risk factor for malaria. Additionally, one of the articles suggests that children who are malnourished have a reduced likelihood of contracting malaria. The findings of this scoping review indicate a bidirectional correlation between malnutrition and the occurrence of malaria in young children.

Abstract

Introduction: Adequate sleep is crucial for adolescent health because sleep deprivation can induce moodiness and frustration. Personality, encompassing introversion and extraversion, influences behavior and interaction patterns. Emotional intelligence pertains to the recognition and management of one’s own emotions and those of others. Methods: This study explored the relationships among sleep quality, personality type, and emotional intelligence among 5th and 7th semester students at the Faculty of Medicine, Hang Tuah University Surabaya, from 2024--2025. Using a descriptive analytic design and cross-sectional approach, 196 respondents were selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected via the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Personality Type Questionnaire, and Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, which are distributed online. No personally identifiable information was collected, ensuring the full anonymity of the respondents. Results: Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed significant relationships between sleep quality and personality type (r = 0.235, p = 0.0005), between sleep quality and emotional intelligence (r = 0.212, p = 0.0005), and between personality type and emotional intelligence (r = 0.1476, p = 0.0005). Poor sleep quality was associated with lower emotional intelligence, indicating that sleep affects emotional awareness. Similarly, personality type was correlated with variations in emotional intelligence. Conclusion: This study revealed significant correlations between sleep quality, personality type, and emotional intelligence among medical students, suggesting that these factors play a key role in their emotional wellness.

Abstract

Anxiety is a global psychiatric phenomenon, while poor sleep quality remains a pressing public health issue. The arduous medical education journey exposes students to prolonged stress, potentially exacerbating anxiety and sleep disturbances. This study investigates the correlation between anxiety and sleep quality in Hang Tuah Faculty of Medicine students, bridging the pre-clinical and clinical phases. Employing an analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design, this study enrolled students from pre-clinical (batches 2020, 2021, 2022) and clinical years (batches DM45, DM46, DM47). Among the 409 approached participants, 296 met the inclusion criteria after excluding 113 samples. Data collection utilized online questionnaires with acquired informed consent. Sleep quality was evaluated via the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, generating scores from 0 to 21. This study showed significantly robust evidence of an association between anxiety and sleep quality (p-value: 0.0001; r: 0.342) across both pre-clinical and clinical students. This study underscores a direct relationship: elevated anxiety levels correspond to diminished sleep quality. Such findings resonate with the prevailing challenges in medical education and their impact on students' mental and physical well-being. Implementing targeted interventions is crucial to address these concerns. In conclusion, this study underscores the undeniable link between anxiety and sleep quality among Hang Tuah Faculty of Medicine students, encompassing the years 2017 to 2022. The implications are far-reaching, emphasizing the necessity of interventions that enhance both psychological well-being and sleep quality. By recognizing and addressing these challenges, medical institutions can foster healthier academic environments and better equip students for their medical careers.

Its escalating prevalence globally and in Indonesia necessitates a comprehensive understanding of associated lifestyle patterns. This study, conducted at Pamolokan Health Center in Sumenep City District, Sumenep Regency, in 2023, focuses on the lifestyles of hypertensive patients. Globally, hypertension affects a substantial portion of the population, impacting public health significantly. In Indonesia, the prevalence of hypertension has steadily risen, prompting a focused examination of contributing factors. Among 85 hypertensive respondents, those aged 36-45 comprised 74.12%, with females constituting 76.67%. Hypertension severity varied, with 55.29% experiencing grade 1 hypertension. The study assessed lifestyle components, revealing 23.53% smoking, 67.06% favouring salty foods, 52.94% consuming fatty foods, 58.82% indulging in coffee, and 35.29% reporting regular physical activity. Understanding the lifestyle patterns of hypertensive patients is crucial for devising targeted interventions.
