Abstract

This study analyses the impact of the Second Vatican Council on the Catholic Church in Ketapang Diocese. The purpose of the study is to explain the mission movement, the history of changes in ecclesiastical structures, and the ecumenical principles introduced by the Second Vatican Council. The research method used is a literature study with a historical and narrative approach. The findings show that the Second Vatican Council has had a significant impact on the Catholic Church in Ketapang Diocese. The Church's mission movement is growing, reflected in the changing view of the relationship between the Church and the world, as well as between religions. Theological principles such as the teaching of love and respect for others have become central values in the Christian tradition. The Second Vatican Council also strengthened the role of the laity in the Church, underlining the responsibility of every member of the Church in mission. In addition, the Second Vatican Council opened the horizons of the Catholic Church of Ketapang Diocese in the context of mission to the whole world. The conclusion of this research confirms that the Second Vatican Council is not only a historical event of the Church, but also a source of inspiration that is relevant in facing today's challenges. The Catholic Church of Ketapang Diocese continues to strive to carry out the mission of Christ with a spirit inspired by the principles of the Second Vatican Council, maintaining theological integrity, and fidelity to Church teachings.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the 1983 Code of Canon Law and the Second Vatican Council from a pastoral theological perspective. The 1983 Code of Canon Law represents a significant reform in the Catholic Church’s legal structure, shifting from a juridical to a pastoral approach, largely influenced by the theological renewal of the Second Vatican Council. This research aims to analyze the continuity and transformation of canonical norms, particularly in their application within the Church's pastoral life. Using a qualitative method with a textual analysis approach, this study reviews official Church documents, including the 1983 Code of Canon Law and the decrees of the Second Vatican Council, applying hermeneutical and theological reflections. The findings reveal that the 1983 Code of Canon Law integrates key elements of Vatican II’s ecclesiology, emphasizing the communal nature of the Church and the active participation of the laity. Furthermore, the study highlights the pastoral dimension of canonical law, particularly in its flexibility and responsiveness to contemporary pastoral needs. The study concludes that the reforms brought by the 1983 Code of Canon Law reflect a deeper alignment with Vatican II’s vision, reinforcing the Church’s mission in a more inclusive and adaptive manner. These insights provide theological and pastoral implications for Church leaders and scholars in applying canonical norms effectively within pastoral contexts.

Abstract

The humanitarian crisis in Papua, Indonesia, persists due to ongoing tensions between the state and indigenous Papuans. This crisis manifests in various forms, including war, horizontal conflicts, murder, arrests, violence, intimidation, and terror. These dehumanising conditions have led to the emergence of individuals and groups who stand in solidarity with those most affected, such as humanitarian activists from diverse backgrounds. Johann Baptist Metz highlighted the significance of solidarity as a cornerstone of his practical fundamental theology. Drawing on this theoretical framework, this study employs a phenomenological approach to explore and analyse the experiences of activists in Papua. The purpose is to capture the lived experiences of those who seek solidarity with vulnerable communities. The findings reveal that solidarity arises from a desire to help others, shared human values, and personal encounters with those who suffer. It develops across all social groups, among fellow sufferers or individuals from more privileged backgrounds.

Abstract

Natural resources represent a commodity that is in high demand and is used to meet human needs. One of the natural resources that is in high demand is coal. The development of technologies such as trains, fuel and power plants requires the use of coal. In light of these developments, it is imperative that coal be managed in an environmentally responsible manner to prevent damage to the environment and avoid further environmental pollution. In the preceding one years ago, a case emerged that was brought to public attention. The case in question concerns the construction of a Steam Power Plant (PLTU) in North Kalimantan. The objective of this paper is to examine the case in question with reference to the perspectives set forth in Laudato Si and Baruch Spinoza's philosophy of pantheism. The issue originated with the opposition of various parties to the construction of the infrastructure. The rejection was based on the pretext of preserving the environment. Conversely, the government maintains that electricity supply is necessary for equitable development. Both parties' intentions are commendable and well founded. However, it is crucial to determine which objective is of greater importance and necessity. In light of these challenges, this paper's central inquiry is: What is the primary issue at the core of this controversy? How are the government's efforts to resolve it and the agreement with local residents progressing? This writing employs the literature method and pertinent literature sources. Furthermore, this writing aims to elucidate the necessity of environmental preservation in the context of Laudato Si and Spinoza's philosophy of pantheism regarding nature. Furthermore, the benefits of writing provide suggestions and solutions for the proper resolution of this problem. In light of the aforementioned considerations, the findings of this paper endeavor to integrate the principles of environmental impact assessment (AMDAL) and renewable energy development into a comprehensive framework for ensuring the long term sustainability of the ecosystem and the well being of the people of North Kalimantan. The discussion is structured around four key elements: First, A detailed account of the case in question. Second, A concise biographical sketch of Baruch Spinoza and an overview of his contributions to philosophical thought. Third, An examination of the fundamental principles that underpin the protection of the natural environment. Fourth, A comparative analysis of the principles espoused in Laudato Si and those articulated in Spinoza's pantheistic philosophy

Abstract

Abstract

Integrating Catholicism and Kanjan Serayong culture within the Pesaguan Dayak community exemplifies the dynamic interplay between religious and cultural rituals, particularly in funeral ceremonies, fostering communal solidarity and cultural resilience through a seamless blend of traditional and Catholic practices. This research aims to elucidate how these cultural and religious elements coexist and reinforce each other within the community. Employing qualitative methods, the study includes interviews with three Pesaguan Dayak Indigenous Leaders and informants, participant observations, and literature analysis guided by Victor Turner's theory of ritual structure. The findings highlight that both Catholicism and Kanjan Serayong culture places a strong emphasis on rituals, particularly funeral ceremonies, which are central to honoring the deceased and fostering communal solidarity. The study reveals a profound respect for sacred traditions and cultural heritage, showing that rituals reflect a seamless blend of Catholic and indigenous practices, indicative of cultural adaptation and resilience. This research underscores the need for further studies on cultural inculturation within Indigenous communities, comparative analyses across different cultural contexts, and interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the understanding of Indigenous spirituality and cultural heritage preservation. Additionally, this study recommends involving local communities in the research process to promote mutual learning and effective cultural preservation strategies.

Abstract

This study is the most recent exposition of the Malapas tradition of the Dayak Kanayatn tribe in West Kalimantan. Malapas is an act of anticipating the occurrence of Sumpanan because of not having time to eat or drink something that is desired by oneself or offered by others. The purpose of this study was to determine the motives of Dayak Kanayatn students, who are migrants in the city of Malang, East Java, who still maintain the Malapas tradition. This study uses a qualitative method to obtain a rich picture and description of the respondents. Data collection was carried out by distributing an open questionnaire in the form of a Google Forms to Dayak Kanayatn students who are studying and living in the city of Malang. The data analysis of this study used Clifford Geertz’s Thick Description theory. The results of the study show that there are six motives for students of the Dayak Kanayatn tribe, who are migrants in the city of Malang, East Java, to still maintain the Malapas tradition: (1) so as not to be a Sumpanan, (2) as a form of respecting gifts or offers of food and drink from other people, (3) as a form of respecting ancestral traditions, (4) to affirm their identity as Dayak Kanayatn people, (5) to build solidarity, (6) because it has become a habit so that it becomes a spontaneous reaction or reflex. The results of this study indicate that knowledge and awareness of local traditions among the Dayak Kanayatn tribe, who are migrants, is still very strong. This is an important capital for preserving traditions in this era of modernization.
