Abstract

Indonesia’s position as the world’s second-largest contributor to plastic waste reflects deeply rooted patterns of unsustainable consumption. Addressing this critical issue requires innovative educational strategies to cultivate environmental responsibility and creative problem-solving in future teachers. This study examines how a guided research-based learning (GRBL) model can transform the perceptions of prospective primary school teachers regarding plastic waste management—shifting from conventional 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) actions to designing environmentally friendly bioplastics. Employing a one-shot case study design, the research was carried out over one semester in a science education course involving 214 fifth-semester students enrolled in a primary teacher education programme. They were divided into 54 groups. Data were collected through observation sheets, student worksheets, and creativity assessment rubrics. The findings suggest that GRBL prompted students to critically engage with sustainability issues by exploring the biodegradability of various natural materials. Most participants selected starch-based substances due to their accessibility and assumed ecological benefits. However, the resulting bioplastic products predominantly exhibited characteristics of modification and imitation rather than originality or innovation. The proportion of students proposing plastic from organic materials increased significantly from 22.2% to 66.7%, with 27.8% suggesting edible straw ideas. While these developments are promising, the ideas lacked originality and were limited to modifications and imitations. This indicates that while GRBL broadened students’ views on waste solutions, their creative outputs remain limited by insufficient scientific exploration and design experience. The study concludes that GRBL has strong potential to foster sustainability-oriented thinking in teacher education, especially when paired with deeper inquiry and iterative practice. These findings highlight the need for science teacher education to embed structured, hands-on research experiences that connect scientific knowledge with real-world environmental issues, preparing future educators to promote both creativity and ecological awareness in the classroom.

Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) media is a 3D simulation learning medium that can provide direct experience to students by exploring a virtual world that can be felt like real life. VR has advantages, including being able to provide real stimulation about something abstract with the help of electronic devices such as smartphones and VR boxes. The use of VR in education can be done with the help of MilleaLab software. MilleaLab is software that has the advantage of being able to create VR media without coding, already providing audio features, 3D animation, images, Youtube videos, pop-ups, background music (BGM), and quizzes so that it is interesting to use by students. This study was conducted to determine the effect of VR media assisted by MilleaLab on students' curiosity and critical thinking skills (CTS). The method used is a quasi-experiment with a nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design research design. In the study, the subjects used were two classes, namely the experimental class with learning using VR media assisted by MilleaLab and the control class with learning using Powerpoint. The research data analysis was conducted using the N-Gain test and the Manova test, which had previously conducted the prerequisite test, namely the normality test and the homogeneity test. The results of the study indicate that virtual reality media assisted by MilleaLab has an effect on students' curiosity and CTS. Based on the Manova test, the results of critical thinking have a sig. value of 0.000, and on curiosity, the sig. value of 0.000 indicates that the sig. value 0.05

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the comprehension levels of prospective primary school teachers regarding verbal and visual representation models of static electricity. A survey was conducted involving 110 prospective teachers from West Java Province, selected through purposive sampling. Participants were categorized based on their secondary school study programs and gender. The study utilized a five-tier test as the instrument for data collection, with responses analyzed using descriptive statistics. Verbal and visual responses were categorized into several levels. Analysis revealed that the majority of both verbal and visual responses fell into the lack of knowledge, misconception, unidentified categories. These findings highlight the inadequate understanding of static electricity concepts among prospective primary school teachers, which may contribute to students' difficulties. Differences in educational background and gender did not significantly influence the comprehension levels in either verbal or visual representations of static electricity concepts. This provides insight into the fact that the topic of static electricity, though often regarded as straightforward and revisited at various educational stages from primary to secondary school, remains a source of widespread misunderstanding and error. The study underscores the critical need for targeted interventions in teacher education programs to enhance understanding and effective teaching of scientific concepts like static electricity at the primary school level.
