Abstract

Water literacy, or the culmination of water-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours, is a relatively new field of study with growing importance for sustainable water management and social water equity (McCarroll & Hamman, 2020). This study aims to analyse students' water literacy from two area in South Sumatera Indonesia, one area is from Semende which is subdistrict of Muara Enim with Indigenous Culture of water conservation and other students came from Palembang Districts which is at the same province with Semende districs, with a similar abundance of water but without Indigenous Culture. This study's samples were 439 respondents, consisting of 184 boys and 255 girls aged 11-18 years from junior and senior high school students in Palembang Municipality and Semende sub-districts of Muara Enim. There were 39 questions for measuring water literacy in the form of a Likert scale (1-5) to assess knowledge, attitude and behaviours in practical and living literacy. Social literacy was measured in the open-ended question instrument. Three of this water literacy was analysed descriptively. The results showed that practical water literacy in Semende and Palembang was significantly different but not with living water literacy. Besides, students' social water literacy in the Semende had two different answer patterns, while, in Palembang, it was more diverse with six different response patterns.

Abstract

This research is motivated by integrating natural and social sciences into science lessons of independent curriculum. This change significantly impacts the preservice teachers’ readiness in elementary school to implement science learning through an independent curriculum. This research investigates the preservice teachers’ readiness to teach natural sciences in an independent curriculum. This descriptive study involves eight elementary school preservice teachers from one of the LPTK in Bandung. The eight preservice teachers were selected based on purposive sampling. The instrument used in this study was a validated self-efficacy questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings from this study indicate that preservice elementary school teachers are not fully prepared to be able to implement differentiated science learning. The results of the further investigation showed that this was due to the incomplete understanding of preservice elementary school teachers regarding pedagogical aspects, one of which was curriculum changes. The perceptions of preservice elementary school teachers about the diversity of student characteristics are also not by the principles of differentiated learning. This study concludes that preservice elementary school teachers need further information regarding the idea of an independent curriculum in differentiated science learning and guidance in preparing and implementing the lesson. Comprehensive understanding and differentiated science learning practices of independent curriculum need to be provided to preservice elementary school teachers. Therefore, this content needs to be taught to preservice elementary school teachers at LPTK.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine common misconceptions among elementary school students regarding the greenhouse effect. The method used was descriptive research, using 52 student samples selected by purposive sampling technique, and the Rasch model was used to analyze the data. The results showed that the Rasch Model confirmed the validity of the tool, highlighting the challenges in understanding the concept of the greenhouse effect among bright students. Students had a misconception rate of 63% when analyzing the relationship between the ozone layer and the greenhouse effect, 62% when distinguishing between the greenhouse effect and global warming, 60% when examining the relationship between the greenhouse effect and cow dung waste, and 56% when determining the relationship between the greenhouse effect and acid rain. Effective teaching strategies are essential for correcting misconceptions, and future research should explore media or learning models to address these issues. It is imperative for educators to design targeted interventions that specifically target these prevalent misconceptions to improve science education outcomes among elementary school students in Indonesia.
