Abstract

Public health issues such as hygiene, stunting, and substance abuse remain significant challenges in Indonesia, including in North Banjarmasin. These conditions affect the quality of life and well-being of the community, requiring an improvement in knowledge regarding the importance of good hygiene practices, stunting prevention in children, and the dangers of substance abuse. Integrated education that covers these various aspects is crucial for raising awareness and understanding among the public in maintaining health, preventing diseases, and fostering a healthier and more productive generation. This study was conducted through outreach programs focusing on the importance of hygiene for elementary school children, the distribution of nutritious food to address stunting in children, and counseling on the dangers of substance abuse for students in North Banjarmasin schools. The results of the study showed a positive response from the target participants, with increased understanding of personal hygiene, the importance of nutrition for stunting prevention, and the harmful effects of substance abuse. Thus, integrated education, such as the approach in this study, has proven effective in improving public knowledge and can serve as a model in efforts to prevent public health issues.

Abstract

The natives of Central Kalimantan utilize Eleutherine palmifolia (l.) Merr as a traditional medicine to treat various diseases. Eleutherine palmifolia  leaves are rich in flavonoid substances. Eleutherine palmifolia  leaves extract has an IC50 value of 45.33 ppm, indicating significant antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are helpful in reducing the risk of UV radiation-induced skin damage. Eleutherine palmifolia leaves have antioxidant properties that can be used as a peel-off gel mask. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) bases come in various formulations for peel-off gel mask that F1 10%, F2 12%, and F3 14%. The concentration of PVA is the most significant element affecting how well peel-off gel masks create films. This study aims to determine the impact of PVA concentration on the physical of the Eleutherine palmifolia  leaves Peel-off gel mask. All formulas are tested for organoleptics, homogeneity, spreadability, pH value, and drying speed. The results showed that all peel-off gel mask compositions pass the physical properties test. A one-way ANOVA statistical analysis reveals a significant variation in the preparations drying speeds (p<0,05).

Abstract

Background: Child health is essential for human resource development, especially in communities with limited health services. One preventive measure that can be taken to maintain genital hygiene is circumcision. This preventive measure reduces the risk of urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases. However, to carry out child circumcision independently, there are some financial problems in Cahaya Baru Village, Jejangkit District, Barito Kuala Regency. Methods: This activity involved children from Cahaya Baru Village. Participant screening, health instructions, circumcision procedures carried out by medical professionals, post-procedure medication administration, and medication use instructions were all methods used in the implementation. The Indonesian Red Crescent (BSMI) of South Kalimantan, the Barito Kuala District Health Office, the Jejangkit District Health Center, and the Cahaya Baru Village government were involved in this project. Results and discussion: Forty participants successfully received a safe and controlled circumcision procedure. Before the procedure, all participants underwent a screening process and received health instructions. There were no significant complications post-circumcision, and all participants received pain relievers and antibiotics for healing. In addition, DAGUSIBU training increased community understanding of proper drug use. Active participation of various parties ensured that activities ran smoothly and increased synergy in community-based health services. Conclusion: Mass circumcision activities in Cahaya Baru Village showed that multi-sector collaboration-based programs can improve community access to basic health services. This program was successful thanks to participation, trained medical personnel, and health education. Similar efforts are expected to be carried out sustainably to increase the positive effects on community health welfare.

Abstract

Body scrub is a type of cosmetic preparation that has seen increased use, particularly with the incorporation of natural ingredients as its base. Belimbing wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi Linn.) is a traditional medicinal plant known for its high content of saponins, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, and formic acid, all of which contribute to its significant antioxidant activity. This makes it a promising candidate for development into a cosmetic product for skin care. This study involved the formulation of body scrub preparations using A. bilimbi powder, with variations in triethanolamine (TEA) as an emulsifying and alkalizing agent to optimize the resulting product formula, which was then tested physically. The A. bilimbi fruit was processed into simplicia, which was subsequently ground and formulated into three different body scrub formulas. These three formulas were subjected to organoleptic tests, homogeneity tests, and pH tests to assess the impact of varying TEA concentrations. The results indicate that TEA influences the texture and pH values of the body scrub preparations. However, the distribution of the preparations based on the homogeneity test results showed no significant differences among the three formulas. The study identified Formula II, with a 3% TEA concentration, as the most optimal formula, meeting SNI standards for pH and demonstrating the best organoleptic properties among the three formulas.

Abstract

Medication adherence is a crucial factor in the successful management of diabetes mellitus, yet many studies show that adherence remains low and is shaped by multidimensional influences. This study aimed to explore barriers to medication adherence among patients with diabetes mellitus in primary health centers (Puskesmas) using the WHO five-domain adherence framework. A qualitative descriptive-exploratory design was applied. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten patients undergoing routine treatment at Puskesmas in Banjarmasin City, recruited through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis was performed guided by the WHO adherence model. Five major themes emerged. Social and economic factors included limited transportation costs, distance to the health center, and lack of family support. Health system and provider factors involved brief consultations, insufficient patient education, and long queues. Condition-related factors comprised the absence of immediate symptoms, fatigue from chronic illness, comorbidities, and psychological distress. Therapy-related factors included complex regimens, side effects, and discontinuation of therapy without consultation. Patient-related factors were characterized by forgetfulness, reliance on alternative medicine, fluctuating motivation, and feelings of boredom. These findings highlight that adherence barriers are multidimensional and result from the interaction of individual, social, and system-level determinants. Addressing adherence requires holistic and continuous interventions at the primary care level, with emphasis on patient education, family involvement, and strengthening the role of healthcare providers.

Abstract

Kepok banana peel (Musa paradisiaca) is an agricultural waste with great potential to be utilized as a raw material for traditional medicine. Several studies have demonstrated that kepok banana peel contains bioactive compounds that act as antioxidants, antibacterial agents, and accelerate the wound healing process. Standardization of the simplicia and extract is necessary to ensure quality, safety, and consistency of its effectiveness as a phytopharmaceutical. This study aims to standardize kepok banana peel through both specific and non-specific parameters. The extraction method employed in this research was sonication using ethanol as a solvent. The results showed that kepok banana peel contains active compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins. Standardization tests on the simplicia powder of kepok banana peel included determination of water content, total ash, acid-insoluble ash, ethanol-soluble extract, water-soluble extract, total plate count (TPC), yeast and mold count (YMC), and heavy metal contamination, with the following results: 10.34%; 9%; 2.25%; 0.06%; 6.91%; 10.26%; >3.0 × 10³ cfu/g; 5.7 × 10³; <0.001 mg/kg, respectively. Meanwhile, the standardization results for the kepok banana peel extract were as follows: 9.57%; 11.19%; 0.07%; 0.26%; 21.68%; 22.53%; 4.6 × 10³ cfu/g; 8.2 × 10³; <0.001 mg/kg.
