Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The effect of a high-fat diet on zebrafish as an alternative experimental animal in studying lipid metabolism is not fully understood. In this research, sweet purple potato extract (SPPE) which has anthocyanin have used as an anti-obesity property. Zebrafish aged 8 mpf was divided into five groups: Non-DIO (control negative), DIO (Diet-Induced Obesity, control positive), and three experimental groups (DIO A, DIO B, DIO C). Each group consisted of five Zebrafish. All groups have been fed freshly hatched Artemia for 40 days where the Non-DIO’s amount was 5 mg Cyst/fish one time per day, and the other groups’ amount was 60 mg Cyst/fish three times per day. The experimental groups were exposed to sweet purple potato extract three times per day by different SPPE doses: DIO A by 80 ppm, DIO B by 120 ppm, and DIO C by 160 ppm. The results show that there was no significant difference between the positive control group and the experimental groups in term of feeding intake, BMI, blood glucose, and total cholesterol. However, based on molecular parameters, there was a declining trend on PPAR-γ level, although, the adiponectin level remained stable. We suggest that anthocyanin does not affect feed intake, BMI, blood glucose level, cholesterol, and expression of PPAR-γ and adiponectin of zebrafish with diet-induced obesity.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of obesity is increasing tremendously worldwide. Obesity is correlated with the consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) and monosodium glutamate (MSG). Although the effect of MSG or HFD on inflammation has been established, lack of information about the effects of both combination on simultaneous systemic and brain inflammation that can be evaluated from cortisol serum and brain resistin level respectively. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of combining HFD and MSG on brain resistin, serum cortisol, lipid profiles, visceral weight, and body weight gain. Methods: Sixteen adult female rats were randomized into 4 groups consist of standard diet; HFD+MSG 0.05 mg/gBW, HFD+MSG 0.2 mg/gBW and HFD+MSG 0.35 mg/gBW. Lipid profiles were measured using automatic biochemical analyzer. Brain resistin and serum cortisol level were determined using enzyme-linked immunoassay. Results: The groups of HFD+MSG significantly have higher level of brain resistin (p<0.003), serum cortisol (p<0.01), total cholesterol (p<0.003) and visceral fat weight (p<0.05) than control group. Conclusion: The combination of HFD, and MSG generates obesity that led to systemic-brain alteration on inflammation.  Further study is necessary to evaluate further the functional impact of both combinations on behavioral profiles.

Abstract

Low physical activity increases the number of non-communicable diseases. This phenomenon occurs in medical students. This study aimed to determine the correlation between sedentary behavior and physical activity on cognition, mental health, cortisol, and brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). Using a cross-sectional design of observational study, eighty-six medical students were involved in this study. The subjects were interviewed to assess cognitive function and depression levels. Saliva was taken to measure cortisol and BDNF level. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Spearman test. Depression is the only variable that correlates significantly with habitual physical activity (p=0.025, r=-0.214). Sedentary behavior has a weak correlation with cognitive failure, anxiety, and depression ([p=0.046, r=0.216]; [p=0.039, r=0.223]; [p=0.011, r=0.273]). The results found that high physical activity improves mental health and cognition. This study suggested that physical activity can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety among medical students.

Abstract

Introduction. Erectile dysfunction negatively impacts self-esteem, quality of life, and interpersonal relationships. Studies have shown significant improvements in sexual function in men and women who undergo regular moderate-intensity physical exercise interventions. However, public awareness of the importance of physical activity in sexual health remains low. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between physical activity level and erectile function among community members in the Kendalkerep Primary Health Care area. Methods. This is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design involving 50 adult men who participated in screening and educational activities, selected using incidental sampling. Physical activity levels were categorized as low, moderate, and high, while erectile function was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5). Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed using Spearman correlation tests. Result. The results demonstrated a strong positive correlation between physical activity level and IIEF-5 score (ρ = 0.702; p < 0.001), as well as a significant negative correlation between physical activity level and erectile dysfunction severity (ρ = −0.643; p < 0.001). Body mass index and blood pressure were also significantly associated with erectile function, whereas age showed no significant correlation. Conclusion. Higher levels of physical activity are associated with better erectile function. Physical activity may serve as an effective non-pharmacological strategy for the prevention of erectile dysfunction at the community level.
