Abstract

Low physical activity increases the number of non-communicable diseases. This phenomenon occurs in medical students. This study aimed to determine the correlation between sedentary behavior and physical activity on cognition, mental health, cortisol, and brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). Using a cross-sectional design of observational study, eighty-six medical students were involved in this study. The subjects were interviewed to assess cognitive function and depression levels. Saliva was taken to measure cortisol and BDNF level. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Spearman test. Depression is the only variable that correlates significantly with habitual physical activity (p=0.025, r=-0.214). Sedentary behavior has a weak correlation with cognitive failure, anxiety, and depression ([p=0.046, r=0.216]; [p=0.039, r=0.223]; [p=0.011, r=0.273]). The results found that high physical activity improves mental health and cognition. This study suggested that physical activity can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety among medical students.

Abstract

Background: Maxillofacial fracture consists of several types of fractures depending on their location. Traffic accidents are the most common cause of these cases. The choice of management given in maxillofacial fractures is divided into immediate and planned delayed management, depending on the condition of the injured tissue. Purpose: To describe the clinical characteristics of maxillofacial fracture in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Faculty of Medicine Universitas Andalas/Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital Padang, in 2020 to 2022. Method: A descriptive study with retrospective approach. The study was conducted by collecting data from the medical record section by using a total sampling technique (59 patients) from 2020 to 2022. Result: The highest cause was traffic accidents (49.2%), the most common findings were nasal bone fracture (44.1%), with operative management (82.4%). Conclusion: Maxillofacial fractures were most commonly experienced by the young age group and caused by traffic accidents, therefore driving safety and driver compliance should be more emphasized. Abstract

Background: Meningiomas are common primary brain tumors with variable clinical behavior. While most are benign, a subset exhibits aggressive characteristics and a high recurrence rate. This study aimed to investigate the association of Programmed Death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1) and Ki-67 labeling index with histopathological grade and recurrence in meningioma. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 139 cases of meningioma diagnosed between January 2020 and December 2023. PD-L1 expression was evaluated using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and scored using the combined positive score (CPS). Ki-67 labeling index was determined as the percentage of tumor cells with positive nuclear staining. The association of PD-L1 and Ki-67 with histopathological grade and recurrence was analyzed. Results: PD-L1 expression was positive in 66.7% of cases and was significantly associated with recurrence (p = 0.006). A higher Ki-67 labeling index (>4%) was observed in 68.9% of cases and was also significantly associated with recurrence (p = 0.013). No significant association was found between PD-L1 expression or Ki-67 labeling index and histopathological grade. Conclusion: PD-L1 expression and Ki-67 labeling index may serve as potential prognostic markers for predicting recurrence in meningioma. Further studies are needed to validate these findings and explore their potential therapeutic implications.

Abstract

Schwannoma is a benign soft tissue tumor of the nerve sheath, composed of neoplastic cells with Schwann cell differentiation. It predominantly arises from peripheral nerves in the head, neck, and extremities, with a peak incidence in the fourth to sixth decades. Schwannoma is typically a solitary and sporadic lesion, affecting individuals of all ages, with an incidence rate of 4.4-5.23 cases per 100,000 people. The prevalence is around 7% of all primary nervous system tumors, often occurring in the head and neck (20-50%) and affecting cranial nerves such as N. Vagus and N. Sympathetic. This case report involves a 50-year-old female patient presenting with a right neck lump that had been present for 23 years, initially small but growing rapidly in the last 10 years with occasional pain. Initial imaging suggested a thyroid complex cyst, but further investigation, including a CT scan and intraoperative frozen section examination, raised suspicion for a malignant thyroid tumor. However, histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of Schwannoma, distinguishing it from other potential malignant lesions, such as Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma (ATC). This case highlights the importance of intraoperative cytology and frozen section techniques for diagnosing Schwannoma. Although Schwannomas share morphological similarities with other tumors, particularly in the thyroid region, a multidisciplinary approach combining clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings is essential for an accurate diagnosis. This case also underscores the need for careful differential diagnosis in nerve sheath tumors located in the neck.

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant salivary gland tumor with unique features, including slow growth, progressive, poor prognosis, recurrence propensity, and perineural invasion tendency. SOX10 is a transcription factor expressed in the majority of tumors. SOX10 overexpression was hypothesized to play an important role in tumor-stroma interactions, especially perineural invasion and histopathological patterns. Method A cross-sectional study was performed using 30 blocks of formalin-fixed embedded specimens previously diagnosed as salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinomas. Perineural invasion and histopathological patterns were evaluated followed by immunohistochemical staining to evaluate SOX10 expression. The staining intensity and proportion of positively stained cells in both tumor and stroma cells were grouped into high and low expression levels. Chi-square tests were used for statistical analysis. Result The cribriform pattern was the most common histopathological pattern in both high and low SOX10 expression. The majority of tumors with high SOX10 expression (66.67% in stroma cells and 73.33% in tumor cells) were found to have more perineural invasion. Conclusion There was a tendency for perineural invasion in tumors with high SOX10 expression, although this was not statistically significant. There was no significant association between SOX10 expression and histopathological pattern.
