Abstract

Purpose of the study: Assessment of students' critical thinking skills and environmental care attitudes is crucial for science learning. This research aims to develop an essay test instrument for critical thinking and a questionnaire for environmental care attitudes, evaluating their validity through expert assessments and trials. Methodology: Utilizing the Research and Development (R&D) model by Oriondo & Dallo-Antoio (1998), the study comprises three stages: test planning, trials, and validation. A random sampling technique was employed, involving 267 students. The critical thinking instrument consists of essay questions, while the environmental care attitudes are measured using a prosocial intentions questionnaire. Main Findings: Validity results indicate a high Aiken index of 0.96 for critical thinking essays and 1.0 for the environmental care questionnaire. Reliability estimates were 0.73 for critical thinking and 0.71 for environmental attitudes, both good. The difficulty level for the critical thinking instrument was classified as medium (0.68), while the environmental care instrument was deemed difficult (1.65). Limitations include focusing solely on science subjects, trials restricted to one area, and reliance on self-reports for environmental attitudes, which may introduce bias. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study lies in integrating critical thinking assessment with environmental care attitudes, a rare approach in previous research. In conclusion, the developed instruments effectively measure students' critical thinking skills and environmental care attitudes in science education, particularly regarding global warming.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze research trends related to flipped classrooms in physics learning from 2019 to 2023 through bibliometric analysis. The research trends consistently show a growing interest in flipped classrooms as a relevant and compelling topic in physics education. Using bibliometric mapping techniques, several distinct clusters were identified, including purple, blue, green, and orange clusters. Key keywords such as flipped classroom, physics, and student emerged as prominent themes. Furthermore, the top five authors and affiliated institutions contributing to this research were identified, with the largest contributions originating from Indonesia. The research was conducted by systematically collecting data from the Scopus database using the keywords "flipped classroom" and "physics" for the selected time frame. Data were analyzed using VOSviewer, focusing on three types of visualizations: network visualization, overlay visualization, and density visualization. Microsoft Excel was used to graph publication trends and document distribution, providing additional insights into the results. The findings of this study highlight the significant potential of flipped classrooms to improve students' understanding of physics learning by employing participatory methodologies and engaging students directly in the learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to produce PBL-STEM-based Student Worksheet Electronics assisted by PhET simulation on the topic of temperature and heat that is feasible and able to improve science literacy in a limited way by reviewing the results of N-Gain score analysis. The subjects in this study were students of class VII C SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Depok Sleman totaling 30 students, with 17 male and 13 female students. The research model used in this research is the 4-D (Four D) development model which consists of four stages, namely define, design, develop, and disseminate. The instruments in this study were interview guidelines, validation sheets, and students' pre-test and post-test questionnaires. Analysis of feasibility data was obtained through a validation questionnaire validated by three expert validators, while the improvement of science literacy was obtained through the results of limited trials. The data was obtained through the results of the pre-test and post-test given to students before the application of PBL-STEM-based Electronic Student Worksheets assisted by PhET simulation and after the application of PBL-STEM-based Electronic Student Worksheets assisted by PhET simulation. The validity results of this study obtained an average assessment score from the three expert validators of 93% with very valid criteria so that the PBL-STEM-based Electronic Student Worksheet aided by PhET simulation can be applied to science learning. The results of improving science literacy through limited testing of PBL-STEM-based Electronic Student Worksheets assisted by PhET simulation as an effect caused by the use of development products are creating a problem solution of 0.78, identifying scientific issues of 0.74, explaining scientific phenomena of 0.72 and using scientific evidance of 0.71. Overall, the increase obtained for each indicator is categorized as high, resulting in an average N-Gain value of 0.71 with high value criteria so that it can improve students' science literacy. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that the development of PBL-STEM-based Electronic Student Worksheets assisted by PhET simulation is valid and can improve students' scientific literacy through limited tests with high N-Gain categories in each science literacy indicator.         Keywords: elektronic student worksheet, problem based learning, STEM, science literacy.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i3.pp1099-1112

Abstract

The use of e-worksheets is important in 21st-century learning. The purpose of this study is to assess the validity of an interactive e-worksheet based on a scientific approach with the help of Solar System Scope designed for junior high school students and focusing on solar system materials. This is crucially important because a number of challenges students face in grasping the understanding of the abstract scientific concepts, such as the solar system, which is difficult to be understood through normal teaching practices. The way this is being undertaken is through construct validity in which product evaluations are obtained from validators by researchers' developed instruments. This instrument was created using the e-worksheet feasibility indicator as the foundation. The indicators were evaluated and then grouped into five categories. The findings of the study show that the e-worksheet made is very valid. The presentation component has an average validity percentage of 94.42%, the linguistic aspect has an average validity percentage of 90%, the content element has a validity percentage of 93.75%, and the design aspect of e-worksheet also has a validity percentage of 91.67%. This shows that e-worksheet has extraordinary quality in terms of presentation, language, content, and design. The findings of this study can be used to improve the efficiency of the process of acquiring the concept of the solar system in the framework of 21st-century education.

Abstract

This study emphasizes that science education should go beyond merely transmitting knowledge by fostering an immersive environment that encourages active participation, critical thinking, and reflection. A preliminary investigation revealed a significant issue: students often exhibit insufficient contextual reasoning skills. This finding underscores the need for innovative interventions, leading to the development of the Visual-Auditory-Kinesthetic (VAK) framework. The research adopted a quasi-experimental design, with observations and tests conducted to assess the effectiveness of integrating a socio-scientific approach with the VAK model in enhancing contextual thinking skills. Data analysis was performed using a t-test with Minitab software. The results indicated that incorporating the VAK learning framework alongside the socio-scientific approach significantly improved students' contextual thinking abilities. This study highlights the importance of adopting innovative educational frameworks and demonstrates the transformative impact of the VAK model on students' contextual thinking competencies, marking a significant advancement in pedagogical practices.
