Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the application of Science Technology Society (STS) learning in high school students of class XI IPA. This research is a quasi-experimental research using posttest only design. The sample used is 64 students from Senior High School in Bantul district, Yogyakarta. Samples were obtained using purposive random sampling. Data were collected using posttest value to determine the effect of Science Technology Society (STS) learning and using Student Worksheet to know student ability. The data were analyzed by using ANOVA. The results showed that Science Technology Society (STS) study had significant effect, with a significance value 0,043 (p<0,05). Based on these studies, it can be concluded that the learning Science Technology Society (STS) influential in students’ science process skills.

Abstract

Isolation and structure elucidation of two compounds, namely resveratrol (1), and 3- methoxyresveratrol (2) from stem bark of Melinjo (Gnetum gnemon) had been done. The isolation of those compounds was carried out by chromatographyc method and structure elucidation was performed by interpretation of spectroscopic data, including UV, IR,  1H and 13C NMR 1D and 2D, and FABMS. The result of this study showed that activity each compounds as radical hydroxyl scavenger of resveratrol (1), and 3-methoxyresveratrol (2), with an  IC50 45,17 and 60,12; g/ml respectively. Each compound showed significant activity as UV-B protection. Activity test as UV-B protection showed that resveratrol and methoxyresveratrol have maximum protections (SPF 8,03 and 12,34 respectively), each compounds on 50 g/ml. Key word : melinjo; Gnetum gnemon; natural antioxidant; UV-B protection

Abstract

Four oligoresveratrols ranging from dimer to tetramer, isolated from stem bark of Hopea mengarawan (Dipterocarpaceae) plants were tested for their activity as hydroxyl radical scavenger. The activity of these compounds was evaluated against the 2-deoxyribose degradation induced by the hydroxyl radical generated via a Fenton-type reaction. Result showed that balanocarpol, heimiol A, vaticanol G, and vaticanol B had IC50 3.83; 15.44; 2.01; and 4.71 uM, respectively. These results suggest that oligoresveratrols from stem bark of H. mengarawan maybe useful as potential sources of natural antioxidants. Key words: Oligoresveratrol, Hopea mengarawan

Abstract

The aim of this research is to synthesis glycerol stearate compound from stearic acid with glycerol by product of biodiesel from used cooking oil, and to determine of product using IR and GC-MS spectroscopy. Method of the research was esterifi cation of glycerol and stearic acid with concentrated HCl as catalyst, by refl uct at 120-160 0C for 8 hours. The result was recrystallized by n hexan. The compound characterized by using IR spectroscopy and GC-MS spectroscopy. The compound has solid form, white to yellowish colour and has 58- 59 0C melting point value with rendement 80.53%. IR spectrum showed the presence C=O carbonil, C-O ester, -OH and C-H aliphatic group. The result of GC-MS analysis showed the compound which have synthesized has similarities with glycerol 2-monostearate with similarity index (SI) of 88% with a purity of 98,94%.
