Abstract

The large protests against the New Amendment to the Extradition Bill in Hong Kong and the Omnibus Law 2020 Job Creation Bill in Indonesia are proof of the massive public movement through social media. This study aims to determine how social media is used in social movements in terms of dichotomy content, actor clusters, and collective identity formation in two cases: Indonesia (Rejection of the Omnibus Law Job Creation Bill) and Hong Kong (Rejection of the Extradition Bill Amendment). Differences and similarities are listed below. This research uses a Qualitative Method, with the analysis using Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Q-DAS), namely NVIVO 12Plus. This study has the following results: First, the dichotomy content between Indonesia and Hong Kong tends to be evenly distributed. Second, both examples show parallels in the distribution of actor clusters with the dichotomy, demonstrating that both cases have become a significant movement. Third, the collective identity in the Indonesian case refers to the contesting parties in the pros and cons of the Omnibus Law. In contrast, the Hong Kong case relates to protecting the Hong Kong people’s ethnicity, language, politics, economy, and culture. The limitations of this study focus on social media in social movements and collective identities, excluding regulatory analysis and aspects of digital/mass media. This study recommends further research focusing on the legal consequences of the Omnibus Law and including digital and mass media in the framing of social movements.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explain Muhammadiyah's personal branding strategy for the Special Region of Yogyakarta in winning its cadre, Ahmad Syauqi Soeratno, to become a member of the Regional Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia in the 2024 election. Ahmad Syauqi Soeratno won 398,903 votes or 17.32% of the total percentage through this strategy. This political, institutional support is interesting to explain because it shows the practice of low politics, even though Muhammadiyah's political doctrine has been to play a role in high politics or national politics and not low politics, which is power-oriented. This article is the result of qualitative research, which uses interview techniques, observation, documentation, Focus Group Discussion, and Nvivo 12 Plus and Geographic Information System in its analysis. The discussion results show that the personal branding carried out by the Yogyakarta Special Region Muhammadiyah towards Ahmad Syauqi Soeratno can be understood as an effort to combine high politics and low politics in seizing power and policy space. The separation of high and low politics is not rigid in its implementation at the local level. This political flexibility does not mean opportunism because it remains within the framework of preaching reform or tajdid in the political field. To realize the interests of political da'wah, the electoral behavior of Muhammadiyah citizens is more effectively controlled institutionally so that the potential of the Muhammadiyah network can be optimized rather than given the freedom to choose.

Abstract

This study presents a bibliometric analysis of disaster management in the tourism sector over the past five years, based on data retrieved from the Scopus database. While previous research has emphasized the vulnerability of the tourism industry to disasters and the need for preparedness, there remains a limited exploration of theoretical frameworks and localized perspectives in this field. This study addresses this gap by examining global and local trends in disaster awareness within tourism destinations. Employing a qualitative approach through a systematic literature review, the research utilizes VOSviewer and Scopus analytical tools to map developments in the field. The findings reveal a growing scholarly interest in emerging topics such as post-COVID-19 recovery strategies and sustainable tourism development. The dominance of social science disciplines in the literature underscores their crucial role in informing policy and practice. Notably, 2023 marked the peak in publication output, with Indonesia emerging as a leading contributor reflecting its dual context of rich tourism potential and high disaster vulnerability. Despite this, previous studies have often neglected the integration of local wisdom and cultural values, which are essential for effective community-based disaster management. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on disaster management through a community-based tourism lens, particularly within the context of Yogyakarta. It recommends the development of localized disaster management models that actively involve community participation and draw upon indigenous knowledge and practices to enhance tourism resilience.
