Abstract

Abstract: Schizophrenia is a collection of psychotic disorders with irregularities in the thought process, which have the feeling that they are controlled by external forces, delusions, perceptual disorders and abnormal effects integrated with real situations or reality. The use of antipsychotics in schizophrenic patients is the treatment of this disease, especially the most commonly used atypical antipsychotic users. This study aims to compare LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels in schizophrenia patients who use single atypical antipsychotics and combination atypical antipsychotics at Madani Hospital Medan, North Sumatra. This type of research is descriptive analytical using  a cross-sectional  method that takes data on variable-free bound variables at one time, which is housed at the Upt Health Laboratory. North Sumatra Provincial Health Office. The results of the Independent T-Test of the use of single antipsychotics and a combination of atypical antipsychotics on LDL levels in schizophrenia patients were p=0.001 (P≤0.05). There was a significant difference between the administration of a single atypical antipsychotic and a combination of atypical antipsychotics to LDL levels in patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract

Fever is a common physiological response of the body to infection, inflammation, or other pathological conditions and is characterized by an increase in body temperature above the normal range. Although antipyretic drugs such as paracetamol are widely used to reduce fever, the exploration of medicinal plants as alternative natural antipyretic agents remains important. Dadap serep leaves (Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr.) are known to contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids, and polyphenols, which are potentially associated with antipyretic and anti-inflammatory activity. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the antipyretic activity of dadap serep leaf extract in peptone-induced male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) and to determine the most effective dose among 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW. Methods: This research was a laboratory experimental study using a pre-test and post-test control group design. A total of 30 male white rats were divided into five groups: negative control receiving 1% Na-CMC, positive control receiving paracetamol, and three treatment groups receiving dadap serep leaf extract at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW. Fever was induced by subcutaneous injection of 5% peptone, and rectal body temperature was measured at several observation times after treatment. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA followed by the Tukey HSD post hoc test. Findings: The results showed that dadap serep leaf extract reduced rectal body temperature in peptone-induced rats. The strongest antipyretic effect was observed at a dose of 400 mg/kgBW, indicating that higher extract doses may produce a greater reduction in fever temperature. Implications: These findings indicate that dadap serep leaf extract has potential as a natural antipyretic agent and may support the development of plant-based fever management. The results may also provide a scientific basis for the traditional use of dadap serep leaves in reducing fever. Originality: The originality of this study lies in providing experimental evidence on the dose-dependent antipyretic effect of Erythrina subumbrans leaf extract in a peptone-induced fever model of male white rats.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Dyslipidemia is a metabolic disorder characterized by continuous alterations in plasma lipid levels. Kombucha, a fermented beverage produced from sweetened tea using SCOBY, has been reported to lower cholesterol levels. Research on kombucha continues to expand, particularly regarding the use of non-tea substrates for fermentation, such as salak fruit. This study aimed to analyze the effect of Sidempuan salak kombucha on HDL and LDL levels in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced with a high-fat diet. A true experimental method with a posttest-only control group design was employed, involving 32 rats divided into four groups: KN (standard feed for 6 weeks), K− (standard feed + high-fat diet for 6 weeks), P1 (standard feed + high-fat diet + 2.7 ml/day Sidempuan salak kombucha for 6 weeks), and P2 (standard feed + high-fat diet + 5.4 ml/day Sidempuan salak kombucha for 6 weeks). The collected data were analyzed using a One-Way ANOVA test. The results showed no significant differences in HDL and LDL levels among the four groups (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the administration of Sidempuan salak kombucha did not produce a significant effect on HDL and LDL levels in male rats induced with a high-fat diet.
