Abstract

This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of elderly health cadres in providing first aid for abdominal cramps using a warm compress. The implementation method included health education through interactive lectures, discussions, and live demonstrations of warm compress techniques, followed by participant practice under facilitator guidance. The target audience consisted of six elderly health cadres and twenty-one elderly participants from the “Sekolah Lansia Tangguh” (Resilient Elderly School) in Dusun Curup Village, Rejang Lebong Regency. The results showed that after the counseling and practice sessions, 2 out of 6 elderly cadres (33.3%) and 4 out of 21 elderly participants (19.0%) were able to correctly demonstrate how to relieve abdominal cramps using a warm compress. In conclusion, education and mentoring for elderly health cadres have the potential to enhance community capacity in applying warm compresses as first aid for abdominal cramps. It is recommended that similar activities be carried out continuously to broaden the reach of knowledge and skills within the community.

Abstract

Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a major public health problem in tropical regions, including Indonesia, due to high morbidity rates and environmental factors that support mosquito breeding. This study aimed to determine the influence of nurses and teachers in health education on changes in dengue prevention behavior in schools. Methods: This research used a single-group pretest-posttest experimental design with 90 respondents selected purposively. Changes in knowledge and behavior were assessed before and after the intervention. The intervention involved health education on dengue prevention, focusing on the 3M Plus method: draining, covering, recycling, and using larvicide. Results: The results showed a significant increase in the proportion of respondents with good preventive behavior, rising from 15.6% in the pretest to 91.1% in the posttest (p-value = 0.000). This indicates that health education significantly improves public knowledge and encourages positive behavioral changes in dengue prevention. Conclusion: Health education significantly improves dengue prevention behavior, raising good practices from 15.6% to 91.1%. Sustained community involvement and policy support are crucial for lasting impact.

Abstract

Dengue fever (DHF) is still a major public health problem in tropical areas, including Indonesia, due to high morbidity rates and environmental factors that support mosquito breeding. This study aimed to analyze the role of health education in increasing awareness and behavior of dengue prevention in communities in remote areas in the working area of Puskesmas Kota Padang, Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province. Using a one-group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design, 90 respondents were purposively selected and assessed for changes in knowledge and behavior before and after the intervention. The intervention included health education on dengue prevention, with a focus on the 3M Plus method: drain, cover, recycle, and use larvicide. The results showed a significant increase in the proportion of respondents with good prevention behavior, increasing from 15.6% at pretest to 91.1% at posttest (p-value = 0.000). This indicates that health education significantly improved community knowledge and encouraged positive behavior change in dengue prevention. However, sustained community involvement and support from the government are required to sustain this improvement. These findings emphasize the importance of structured health education programs in reducing dengue transmission and suggest further research to explore long-term behavioral adherence and integration with public health policies

Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) remains a significant public health problem in tropical regions, including Indonesia, due to the rapid spread of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Effective prevention strategies require community involvement and awareness. This study examined the influence of health workers and teachers at SMA 10 RL in socializing the use of Tagetes erecta (marigold), Catharanthus roseus, and fermented ovitrap to minimize mosquito larvae and prevent DHF. The research design used a pre-experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest method, involving 90 students selected by purposive sampling. The intervention included educational sessions and demonstration of mosquito control practices. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test test. The results showed a significant increase in students' knowledge scores from 57.18 (pretest) to 82.84 (posttest), as well as practice scores from 55.64 to 79.74 (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that the integration of biological-based mosquito control methods in educational programs can increase the effectiveness of dengue prevention. Collaboration between health workers and teachers plays an important role in ensuring effective knowledge dissemination and application. Future research should explore long-term behavioral changes and the potential for implementing similar programs in different educational institutions.
