Abstract

The dysfunction of the “pakem” rules in contemporary wayang purwa performances has become a significant phenomenon that has changed the face of this traditional art. Pakem, which should serve as a guideline for the narrative, characters, plot, dialogue, and ethics of the performance, has shifted from its role as an aesthetic standard toward more pragmatic and market-oriented considerations. This shift has caused the dysfunction of the “pakem” rules in wayang performances, which previously upheld traditions and noble values, to now be more oriented towards entertainment and market demands. This study aims to analyze the impact of the dysfunction of the “pakem” rules on the quality of wayang purwa performances in the contemporary era, focusing on three main aspects: the simplification of sulukan, the shift of authority from the dalang to guest stars, and extreme changes in performance style. Qualitative data obtained through in-depth interviews with puppeteers, musicians, and art observers were used to analyze this phenomenon. This analysis is also supported by relevant literature to provide a broader context for the changes occurring in puppetry practices. The results of the study show that the dysfunction of the “pakem” rules tends to influence the perceived quality of wayang performances, leading to the loss of the cultural and aesthetic depth that has been the identity of wayang purwa. This decline in performance quality also reflects a shift in orientation from moral teachings to mere entertainment. Therefore, further research is needed to enrich our understanding of wayang performances in the contemporary era, especially in efforts to revitalize pakem and reinforce traditional values in wayang performances.

Abstract

The field research conducted in this paper is situated against the backdrop of the need for traditional performing arts across the whole territory of Indonesia to adapt to contemporary social, cultural, and institutional conditions. Focusing on the Wayang Wong Sriwedari Javanese classical dance theater in Surakarta Indonesia, this study examines how intergenerational renewal drives artistic change and underpins cultural sustainability. Data was collected through interviews, field observations, and archival records. Preliminary findings show that young troupe members who have received formal arts education have adjusted the company’s stage composition, rehearsal processes, and social positioning. Recruiting within local government processes to help increase organizational stability and professionalization, giving even more power back to artistic collectives matched to these strategic interests locally. Furthermore, reimagined performance aesthetics embolden viewer engagement more broadly, the renewed public interest in traditional art forms is reflected in this developing sensibility. The extent and breadth of this evolution demonstrates that regeneration operates as an integrated multi-faceted set of approaches that draw on the intertwined processes of aesthetic making, civic and collective response. Some experts outline core arguments that heritage performing arts convincingly function as essential instruments for the restoration of society whenever duly supported by sound cultural policymaking and sustained participation from communities. Therefore, scholars should strive to embrace broader definitions of cultural sustainability that position it not simply as preservation but rather a dynamic continuum that intersects with regeneration in art and public interest in institutional governance and meaning.

Abstract

This Community Service program is titled "Revitalization of Sarwoasri and Parisuko Markets: Stall Arrangement and Culinary Product Innovation to Improve the Economy." Culinary markets are crucial to the local economy and serve as community hubs. Revitalizing them restores their function as both economic centers and cultural spaces. This program consists of several stages: analyzing traders' needs, rearranging stalls to make them more strategic and attractive, providing workshop-based digital marketing training, and developing culinary product innovations. The needs analysis identifies the traders' main problems. The stall rearrangement creates a more organized, comfortable, and attractive market environment. The digital marketing training helps traders use social media and digital platforms to promote sales. Culinary product innovation enhances product quality, hygiene, variety, and packaging to better match market preferences, thereby adding value and appeal. These activities lead to significant improvements in market management, product quality, and the traders' marketing skills. Besides providing economic benefits, the revitalization also strengthens local identity by making the market a space for social and cultural interaction. The program increases traders' income in the short term and supports sustainable economic development in the long term. Evaluation and monitoring are conducted regularly to ensure the program's sustainability and to provide recommendations for further market development.
