Abstract

This critical review of Leonard Bunce Meyer's musical analysis theory is aimed at obtaining a basic understanding of an approach that seems uncommon in Indonesian studies of Western music. This study uses a speculative method with descriptive as well as critical approaches, where Meyer's analysis theory is depicted critically by conforming it toward Nicolas Cook's critical review which was based on the Shenkerian concept. The relevance application of this analysis model in the studies of musical form in Indonesia then is discussed. This study concluded that the psychological music analysis of Meyer was carried out by the foreground expectations of the tonal music linear and rhythmical analysis. Compared to the Shenkerian approach which gives greater attention to the harmonic reduction that focused on the harmonic background of tonal music, Meyer?s approach would be less practical in observing at large-scale musical structures. Meyer?s analysis would be valuable to the performers as well as music analysts if they also take into account their musical style concepts which mostly regarded as the area of aesthetic rather than technical analysis. For Indonesia, this method is appropriate for Master and Doctorate studies in Western Music.

Abstract

This research is a bio-bibliographical study of an American ethnomusicologist, Anthony Seeger. Issues discussed include seeking information about Seeger as an important figure, his contribution to scientific development, music education, music history, and basic knowledge of ethnomusicology. Since the data are in the form of written sources that not only come from his works but also the works of others who cite his works so that literature review is used as a research method to obtain answers to the problems raised. This study concluded that the anthropological approach greatly influenced the characteristics of Seeger’s field research in studying the Suyá’s music in the interior part of Brazil. The report from the research turned out to be an essential source for the development of Seeger’s theories of musical anthropology. From the success of Seeger, we could learn how important fieldwork is in ethnomusicology. Kontribusi Anthony Seeger Terhadap Etnomusikologi: Sebuah Bio-Bibliografi Pengarang The Why Suya’ Sing (1987). Penelitian ini adalah studi bio-bibliografi seorang etnomusikolog Amerika, Anthony Seeger. Masalah yang dibahas termasuk mencari informasi tentang Seeger sebagai tokoh penting, kontribusinya terhadap pengembangan ilmiah, pendidikan musik, sejarah musik, dan pengetahuan dasar tentang etnomusikologi. Karena semua data tersebut dalam bentuk sumber tertulis yang tidak hanya berasal dari karya-karyanya tetapi juga karya-karya orang lain yang mengutip karya-karyanya, sehingga tinjauan pustaka digunakan sebagai metode penelitian untuk mendapatkan jawaban atas masalah yang diajukan. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa pendekatan antropologis sangat mempengaruhi karakteristik penelitian lapangan Seeger dalam mempelajari musik Suyá di bagian interior Brasil. Laporan dari penelitian ini ternyata menjadi sumber penting untuk pengembangan teori antropologi musikal Seeger. Dari keberhasilan Seeger, kita bisa belajar betapa pentingnya kerja lapangan dalam etnomusikologi.Kata kunci: etnomusikologi; kerja lapangan; antropologi musikal; Seeger; Suyá

Abstract

This study examined the characteristics of Kunimatsu’s guitar arrangements in Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion by comparing aspects of musical form, melody, and harmony. As with other arrangements’ performances, the primary motif of Astor Piazzola’sOblivion melodic theme in Kunimatsu guitar arrangement has always been played differently from the original version. This performance phenomenon could responsibly risk blurring the identification of structural boundaries within its musical form. The purpose of this study is to prove the basic construction of Oblivion melody, including its form structure and rhythmic characteristics, by comparing Kunimatsu’s arrangements against the composer’s original score. This study uses musicological research methods. The approaches applied in studying this work are analytical, theoretical, and comparative.  This study compares the two data to reveal the musical forms and the differences in the primary motive rhythmic characteristics. The results of this study are findings of the Oblivion musical forms in both publications and the differences in primary motives rhythmic patterns in both sources. The difference in musical form is impressive, possibly caused by the insertion of auxiliary members. As a result, Kunamitsu arrangement includes using the two-part song form, originally a three-part song form. With the revelation of the original melodic structure that is clear from the results of this study, the musicians who will present the Oblivion will at least have the essential reference in their interpretation. This research contributes to expanding studies in classical guitar performance and musical forms and new approaches in textual musicological analysis that are still infrequent.

Abstract

The Selawatan as Musical Performance. The selawatan, an Indonesian Islamic performing arts genre, has beenlooked at from different study perspectives. Although mostly understood as a group type of folk dances as well astheatres, this study has found that the selawatan in the DIY is closely related to an Islamic musical genre which wasbased on vocal art. The most important characteristic that relates amongst any types of selawatan is its repertoirematerials which is centered to a classical Arabic text known as mawlid, especially the one that was written by Al-Barzanji.

Abstract

Hadrah Music in Pondok Pesantren Al Munawwir Krapyak. This study investigates an Islamic musical genreknown as the Hadrah, practiced by female students of the Pondok Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) Al Munawwir.It is based on an ethnomusicological fi eld research conducted between May 2007 and September 2008.Thisstudy fi nds that basic song form is exist in the Hadrah’s songs while their lyrics are mostly taken from classical as wellas popular Islamic poem collections. Although the Hadrah song was performed by melodic ornamental improvisationtechniques that normally applied in reciting the Qur’an, the singer always try to follow the Arabic reading rulescarefully. This fi nding has given us an indication that in order to achieve a good result of musical production, aswell, the Hadrah singers have to master not only the art of Holy Qur’an recitation but also Arabic language fl uency.The female Hadrah is normally performed as a religious entertainment in the school’s traditions, such as anniversaryand graduation celebrations.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas sebuah upaya pengembangan formasi ensambel gitar dalam rangka pencapaian suatu kesetaraan artistik terhadap penyajian sebuah konseto untuk orkestra dan solois instrumen tiup. Proses penelitian ini diterapkan dalam konteks pembelajaran dan pengajaran paket mata kuliah Koor/ Orkes/ Ensambel (KOE) pada kurikulum pendidikan tinggi musik di Indonesia. Permasalahan utama yang dibahas dalam studi ini ialah bagaimana menerapkan repertoar orkestra pada sebuah ensambel gitar? Tujuan dari pemecahan masalah tersebut ialah untuk memperkaya materi pengajaran ensambel gitar yang termasuk salah satu kelompok studi dari paket kelas-kelas KOE. Kontribusi hasil penelitian ini adalah rekonstruksi model pembelajaran ensambel gitar dari tingkat menengah hingga tinggi. Guna mencapai target yang telah ditetapkan, penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan kombinasi metodologis di antara metode transkripsi musikologis dengan metode tindakan kelas yang diadopsi pada studi material dan proses belajar ensambel gitar. Permasalahan yang teridentifikasi disimpulkan dengan pembuatan prototipe aransemen baru sebagai alternatif materi pengajaran melalui proses pengolahan editorial. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa keterbatasan gitar dalam menghasilkan kesetaraan terhadap kulalitas artistik orkestra dapat diatasi tidak hanya dengan mentranskrip reduksi pianonya tapi langsung dari skor orkestranya. Oleh karena itu, ensambel gitar dapat menjadi alternatif yang lebih baik dari versi pengiring piano dalam menyajikan sebuah konsert The Adaptation of Concerto on a Guitar Ensemble as the Enrichment Effort of the Ensamble Teaching Materials. This study discusses an effort in developing guitar ensemble formation in order to achieve an artistic equality to the performance of a concerto for orchestra and wind soloist. This is applied in the context of Indonesian higher music education’s curriculum for the class room teaching and learning of the choir/ orchestra/ ensemble (COE) subject package. The main problem discussed in this study is how to apply an orchestral repertoireire to an ensemble guitar? The purpose of this study is to enrich the teaching material of guitar ensemble, which is one among the COE classes. The result of this study is contributed to the reconstruction of guitar ensemble teaching model from middle to higher grades. To achieve the target that have formerly been set, this study has combined musicological transcription method and the class room action research which are adopted to research material study as well as guitar ensemble learning process. Problems that had identified was concluded by prototyping the new arrangement through transcription process from the concerto repertoire as the teaching material alternative, by editorial treatment. This study concludes that the guitar limitedness to result the equality with the orchestral artistic quality could be overcome not by transcribing from its piano reduction but directly from orchestral score. Because of that reason, guitar ensemble could be a better alternative to the piano accompaniment in performing a concerto for a wind solist, and at the same time it enriches guitar ensemble repertoire.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas kondakting sebagai interpretasi pertunjukan gerakan pertama Divertimento K.138 dalam F mayor karya Mozart. Penelitian ini didasarkan atas pengalaman mengajar mata kuliah kodakting pada program sarjana musik di Fakultas Seni Pertunjukan, Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta, sebagai permasalahan penelitiannya. Melalui observasi, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa beberapa mahasiswa dan lulusan kelas ini, bahkan yang telah berperan sebagai konduktor ternyata memiliki pemahaman yang tidak tepat tentang fungsi kondakting. Masalah pertama dari penelitian ini adalah bagaimana mahasiswa dapat memperoleh pemahaman interpretasi yang lebih baik tentang Divertimento K.138 karya Mozart melalui analisis skor. Masalah kedua, bagaimana merancang implementasi pelaksanaan yang efektif untuk praktik kondakting. Penelitian ini berada dalam ruang lingkup penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan metode musikologi. Penelitian ini secara khusus mengungkapkan bahwa meskipun karya ini memiliki sukat 4/4 (common time) untuk penyajiannya, beberapa tempat pada skor ini perlu didekati dengan sukat duple time, atau pada aba-aba dua per dua. Penggunaan simbol panah yang mengarah secara vertikal dan horizontal di atas skor dapat membantu konduktor untuk mengionterpretasikan penyajian karya ini melalui gerakan kondakting yang efektif.AbstractThis study discusses conducting as a performance interpretation of the first movement of Mozart's Divertimento K.138 in F major. This study took a teaching experience in the conducting class at the undergraduate music program at the Faculty of Performing Arts, Yogyakarta Indonesian Institute of the Arts, as its research problems. Through observation, this study found that students of the class and its graduates, who have experience as a conductor, have an incorrect understanding of the conducting function. The first problem of this study is how students could gain a better understanding of Mozart's Divertimento K.138 through a score analysis. The second is how to design an effective conducting implementation for the work. The scope of this study is within the qualitative research by utilizing the musicological method approach. This research especially reveals that although this work requires a common time for its performance, several places in this score need to approach with the duple time direction, or on cue two by two. The use of arrow symbols pointing vertically and horizontally above the score can help conductors interpret this work's performance through effective conducting movements.Keywords: conducting analysis; Divertimento K.138; Mozart

Abstract

Sejak awal munculnya pandemi Covid 19 di Indonesia, produktivitas kegiatan pembelajaran musik khususnya piano di lembaga nonformal menurun drastis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji strategi mengajar guru piano dalam menjalankan profesinya di lembaga tersebut agar siswa dapat bertahan belajar. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Populasi sampel penelitian ini adalah praktisi pendidikan dan partisipannya, khususnya guru dan siswa di Concertino Music School. Penelitian ini mengumpulkan data melalui observasi partisipatif terbatas dengan pendekatan partisipan sebagai observer. Namun, dalam pengamatan ini, seorang guru yang dipilih dan siswanya akan mewakili populasi. Prosedur penelitian meliputi penetapan data, observasi data sebagai pengamat, analisis data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran piano online bergantung pada ketersediaan dan kesiapan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi baik guru maupun siswa. Selain jaringan yang tidak stabil, kelemahan pendidikan online dalam proses belajar piano terkendala oleh petunjuk teknis akurasi bermain piano, terutama keterbatasan layar. Kesimpulannya, untuk mengatasi target kurikulum yang tidak dapat terpenuhi seluruhnya pada siswa karena keterbatasan fasilitas teknologi, guru mengintensifkan pengarahan dan pemberian motivasi untuk meningkatkan kemandirian siswa dalam belajar. Proses pembelajaran piano online ini akan berkontribusi pada pengembangan metode pengajaran musik online di lembaga non-formal dan meningkatkan studi pendidikan musik jarak jauh.AbstractOnline Piano Learning at Concertino Music School Medan: A Qualitative Study of Non-Formal Education During the Pandemic. Since the initial rise of the Covid 19 pandemic in Indonesia, the productivity of music learning activities, especially pianos, in non-formal institutions has drastically decreased. This research aims to examine the piano teacher teaching strategies in carrying out their profession in the institution so that students can survive learning. This study utilizes qualitative methods. The sample population of this research encompasses educational practitioners and their participants, especially teachers and students at Concertino Music School. This study collects data through limited participatory observation with the participant's approach as an observer. However, in this observation, a selected teacher and her student will represent the population. The research procedure includes establishing data, observing data as an observer, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that online piano learning relies on information and communication technology availability and readiness in teachers and students. In addition to unstable networks, the weakness of online education in the piano learning process is hindered by technical instructions on piano playing accuracy, especially by screen limitations. In conclusion, to overcome curriculum targets that Canada is fulfilled entirely by the student due to the limitations of technology facilities, teachers increase direction with motivation to improve students' self-independence in learning. This online piano learning process will contribute to the development of online music teaching methods in non-formal institutions and improve distance music education studies.Keywords: non-formal education; qualitative studies; online learning; piano

Abstract

Karya El Polifemo de Oro merupakan salah satu repertoar gitar klasik yang menggunakan penerapan sistem serial pada komposisinya. Karya tersebut diciptakan oleh Reginald Smith Brindle seorang komponis dari Inggris. Penulis menggunakan metode Teoritikal dalam melakukan penelitian, yaitu menggunakan suatu teori untuk menganalisis karya tersebut. Di dalam skripsi ini dituliskan mengenai penerapan sistem serial pada El Polifemo de Oro, teori-teori sistem serial, dan macam-macam sistem serial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa El Polifemo de Oro menggunakan sistem serial campuran atau biasa disebut free serialism sistem. The work of El Polifemo de Oro is one of the classical guitar repertoire which using the serialism in its compotition. The work was created by Reginald Smith Brindle a British composer. The author uses a Theoretical method of research into research, using many of theories to analyze the work.
