Abstract

Mucuna pruriens also known as velvet bean (koro benguk) is a plant commonly found in tropical regions, including Indonesia. Mucuna pruriens is known to contain high levels of Levodopa, making it a potential natural treatment for Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. The estimated global incidence of Parkinson's disease in 2024 is expected to reach 12 to 17 million patients. Synthetic Levodopa has been the standard and proven effective therapy for Parkinson's disease. The method used in the preparation of this article is a literature review by collecting relevant and focused articles. The literature sources were accessed through comprehensive searches in three databases (Pubmed, Google Scholar, and Researchgate) from 2014 to 2024, using keywords such as “Mucuna pruriens,” “Levodopa,” and “Parkinson's disease.” The result of the literature review indicates that Levodopa is the dominant active component found in Mucuna pruriens compared to other compounds. The naturally occurring Levodopa functions as a precursor to dopamine, which plays a role in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, thus it can be developed into a complementary therapy in regions with abundant resources.

Abstract

Post-partum depression (PPD) is a depressive episode that lasts up to four weeks after childbirth. Depression in mothers can affect various aspects of life, such as work, family, spouse, and children. There is a high incidence of suicidal thoughts in mothers who experience PPD, contributing significantly to maternal mortality rate. Understanding more about DPP is the main focus of this paper. This article utilizes a literature review method that collects sources from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. This literature review explores various aspects of PPD including epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment. Various physiological changes in the mother's body before and after childbirth increases the mother's vulnerabilities to mood disorders. The mechanisms of PPD involve various pathways, both external and internal. Internal factors include a decrease in certain hormones and neurotransmitters, a history of mental health disorders, and genetic predispositions. External factors include anxiety, external pressures, and lack of social support. The diagnosis of PPD can be established using the DSM-V and ICD-10 criteria. Treatment for PPD can involve both non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies. PPD is a serious mental condition that causes various negative effects for both the mother and her family. The dysregulation of neuro-hormonal pathways is the primary mechanism in the pathogenesis of PPD. Effective diagnosis and appropriate treatment approaches are crucial in the management of PPD.

Abstract

Uterine Atony is medical condition characterized by the inability of the uterus to contract after labour which can lead to dangerous postpartum bleeding. This condition occurs when the uterine muscles do not function properly to shrink the size of the uterus after childbirth, allowing blood to collect in the uterine cavity. Uterine atony is one of the main causes of postpartum hemorrhage that contributes significantly to the high maternal mortality rate, especially in Indonesia. The purpose of writing this article is to add information related to uterine atony so that early identification and appropriate interventions can be made in the management of uterine atony to reduce maternal mortality in Indonesia. The review method used is a type of literature review that collects and identifies literature related to topics that discuss the definition, epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, management and complications of uterine atony.
