Abstract

Abstract

Formaldehyde is a toxic substance commonly found in everyday life. Formaldehyde is also a carcinogenic exposure that often occurs in industrial areas. Formaldehyde itself is genotoxic and cytotoxic to tissues that can cause dysplasia to carcinoma. Inhalation of formaldehyde will expose the respiratory tract, which includes the nasopharynx and lung tissue to formaldehyde. Therefore, it is important to know the differences in tissue susceptibility to formaldehyde exposure related to the ability to cause dysplasia and carcinoma. Six Wistar rats were induced with formaldehyde through the inhalation method at a dose of 40 ppm for 16 weeks, and then terminated and subjected to histopathological examination. The degree of dysplasia will be assessed in both tissues, and then compared and tested statistically. The Mann-Whitney U statistical test showed a P value of 0.818, meaning that there was no significant difference between the degree of dysplasia in nasopharyngeal tissue and lung tissue. However, there was a difference in the rate of dysplasia progression between the two tissues, with nasopharyngeal tissue having a faster rate of progression. This difference in the rate of progression is related to the higher amount of formaldehyde deposition in the upper airway.

Abstract

Dyslipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormal lipid levels in the blood, including total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides. This condition can lead to complications such as cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential of herbal plants from the Sasak tribe, as recorded in Lontar Usada, for managing dyslipidemia. Lontar Usada documents various medicinal plants that are traditionally used by the Sasak people, making it essential to investigate their active compounds and how they influence lipid profiles. This research employs a qualitative approach, focusing on a literature review and analysis of the plants mentioned in Lontar Usada, followed by a biochemical evaluation of their active compounds and mechanisms in regulating lipid metabolism. The findings reveal that several plants listed in Lontar Usada contain bioactive compounds with potential lipid-lowering effects, supporting their traditional use in managing dyslipidemia. In conclusion, the study confirms that the plants from Lontar Usada could offer a natural alternative for dyslipidemia management, aligning with the high cultural acceptance and availability of these plants within the Sasak community.

Abstract

Aspiration pneumonia is one of the diseases that is often hidden and under-recognized. This disease contributes to a higher mortality rate compared to other types of pneumonia. This study aims to analyze the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of aspiration pneumonia. The method used is a literature study by searching for literature published in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Researchgate with the keywords "aspiration pneumonia", "aspiration pneumonia pathophysiology", "aspiration pneumonia diagnosis and treatment". Aspiration pneumonia can occur due to micro mechanisms or macro mechanisms. Micro mechanisms are mechanisms that cannot be observed while macro mechanisms often occur due to impaired swallowing. Aspiration experienced by pneumonia patients causes inflammation and disruption of the epithelium. The diagnosis of aspiration pneumonia can be established based on clinical symptoms and supporting examinations such as radiology and laboratory examinations. Management that can be carried out on aspiration pneumonia can be done with pharmacological and non-pharmacological management.

Abstract

Snacks in the school environment have an important role in fulfilling good nutrition and nutrition for elementary school students. Currently, there are still many traders who do not pay attention to the snacks sold both in terms of health, composition, and hygiene. Based on data from BPOM or the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency, around 39.96% of snacks that are not eligible for consumption are spread throughout Indonesia. This shows how important it is for school students to pay more attention to their health in choosing snacks in the school area. This also underlies the conduct of counseling on healthy food and snacks in the elementary school environment in the Senggigi area, West Lombok Regency as a target elementary school from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Mataram. The counseling was carried out for grade 1 and 2 students of SDN 2 Senggigi and was carried out on Friday, September 1, 2023 at 09.00 – 10.00 WITA. Counseling activities include providing counseling materials about healthy snacks, singing healthy snack songs, pre and post-tests, healthy snack games, and ending with giving fruits to students as participants in counseling. Furthermore, pre and post-test result data was processed using the SPSS application and there was a change in the average value of students' knowledge before and after the delivery of healthy snack counseling materials.

Abstract

The prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents is rising globally, leading to short- and long-term health issues such as type 2 diabetes (Type 2 DM). While obesity has multiple causes, modifiable lifestyle factors like diet and physical activity can reduce the risk Indonesian children are exposed to high-sugar, low-nutrient foods and engage in limited physical activity, increasing their risk for obesity and Type 2 DM. Although children depend on adults for food, they must learn to make healthy choices early on. This community service activity aimed to improve knowledge and promote healthy eating and physical activity among foster children at the Dharma Laksana Orphanage in Mataram City. A brief survey found that 33-60% of the children chose high-sugar foods over healthier options. Education was delivered through presentations and a custom-developed board game, "Pilah Pilih" (Select and Choose), which included a storybook and guide. Forty children and two caregivers participated. Post-activity evaluations showed 60% of children scored above 70 in knowledge assessments, with a highest score of 85. Feedback on the game indicated positive engagement and enthusiasm for replay. The "Pilah Pilih" board game shows potential as an effective educational tool to encourage behavioral change through repeated play.
