Abstract

Parental bereavement represents one of the most profound emotional disruptions in adolescence, yet its academic implications remain underexplored, particularly in relation to how emotional regulation interacts with social support to sustain academic performance. This qualitative phenomenological study investigated the adaptive processes of two 18-year-old students in Surabaya who experienced parental loss, aiming to understand how they navigated grief while remaining engaged in learning. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and classroom observation, then analyzed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged: academic resilience, emotion regulation, social support, and negative emotional experiences. Findings reveal that despite emotional disruptions and social stigma, both students demonstrated perseverance, reflective help-seeking, and meaning-making abilities, supported by cognitive reappraisal and culturally grounded coping (e.g., sabar, ikhlas, prayer). Emotion regulation served as a mediating mechanism linking bereavement to academic resilience, while peer and family support acted as protective buffers fostering motivation and emotional stability. Practically, this study underscores the need for grief-sensitive pedagogy and teacher training in emotional scaffolding to support bereaved students’ adjustment. Theoretically, the study extends Academic Resilience Theory (Cassidy, 2016) by positioning emotion regulation as a mediating mechanism and social support as a key protective factor in the context of parental loss.

Abstract

Cultural expectations for upper-caste women in Ngada society demand that they marry within their caste. This study opens a communicative space for women who have successfully negotiated traditional norms. It aims to understand how women negotiate marriage choices with their families and how social support and communication affect their decision-making processes. This qualitative study uses an interpretative phenomenological approach, employing semi-structured interviews with three upper-caste women who married men of lower-caste status. The findings show that cultural expectations to preserve social status through intra-caste marriage persist, placing pressure on women to relinquish autonomy in making marital decisions. However, open communication about personal choices and seeking family support allowed for the emergence of emotional, instrumental, and informational support that greatly helped women overcome social stigma and choose partners independently. The implications of this study underscore the importance of open family communication in supporting individual freedom in a partner.

Abstract

In the context of modern romantic relationships in Indonesia, digital communication has facilitated the maintenance of intimacy and commitment beyond face-to-face interactions. One such practice, sleep calls, has gained prominence even among non-long-distance couples, raising questions about its role in emotional bonding and relationship dynamics. This study investigates how sleep calls function within non-long-distance romantic relationships, focusing on their potential to strengthen intimacy, foster self-disclosure, and provide social support. Through qualitative data from in-depth interviews with two couples, this research examines how sleep calls are perceived and utilized to enhance emotional closeness, while also exploring potential drawbacks, such as the impact on sleep quality. Findings suggest that sleep calls serve as a unique form of virtual intimacy, allowing couples to nurture emotional connections and demonstrate commitment, but also posing challenges to physical well-being. By positioning this study within the broader context of virtual communication in contemporary relationships, we argue that while sleep calls can significantly deepen emotional bonds, their long-term effects on relationship satisfaction and individual health remain an important area for future exploration.

Abstract

Abstract

Fuel quality is an important factor that influences engine performance and customer satisfaction. As the main fuel provider in Indonesia, Pertamina must ensure that its products meet public expectations. This study aims to analyze public sentiment toward the quality of Pertamina’s fuel products based on data obtained from Platform X (Twitter), using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm as the primary classification method. Data were collected through a crawling process using the tweet-harvest library version 2.6.1 from April 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025, resulting in 1,596 comments. The data then underwent preprocessing, including cleaning, case folding, normalization, tokenizing, stopword removal, and stemming. Sentiment labeling was performed automatically using a lexicon-based approach with two categories—positive and negative—resulting in 799 positive and 795 negative data points. The classification process was carried out using SVM with an 80% training and 20% testing data split. Based on the evaluation results, the SVM model demonstrated effective and stable performance in classifying Indonesian-language text sentiment in the context of public opinion toward Pertamina’s fuel products.

Abstract

Changes in values and participation patterns in the tradition of rewang have become a significant issue amidst social development in Javanese society. This study aims to explore the differences in perspectives between the Baby Boomer generation and Generation Z regarding the rewang tradition based on six collectivism aspects. The subjects consisted of three Baby Boomer women aged 61-79 and twenty Generation Z individuals aged 13-28, recruited using purposive sampling based on their involvement and knowledge of rewang. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through focus group discussions, open-ended questionnaires, and analysis of comments on short films and social media videos related to rewang. The data were analyzed thematically. Findings revealed that Baby Boomers view rewang as an essential part of social identity and collective obligation, while Generation Z interprets it contextually, considering efficiency and personal autonomy. These results indicate that collectivist values persist but adapt according to social dynamics and generational changes. The study’s implications are vital for developing culturally sensitive preservation strategies that respond to shifting intergenerational values in contemporary society.
